European Haulage Rates

Had a vehicle tip in Valencia on Monday and started to have a look around for reloads instead of waiting till Thursday/Friday for the normal load from Barcelona and was quoted the following rates;-

Valencia to Gorinchem (NL Company) 30 europallets 21 ton Rate 1400 euros
Barcelona to Nijmegen (NL Company) 66 europallets 18 ton Rate 1050 euros
Barcelona to Offenbach (D Company) 15 ton Rate 1200 euros

How can anyone run for these rates ?

Hi JJSL, I’m sorry to hear that the rates are that low, but IMHO the answer to your question is that those might be considered good rates if your truck is registered in a country where you’d get away with paying the drivers sixpence a fortnight for European work. :frowning:

T he problem is that the BACK LOAD unless
you have dealings directly with the customer
or have a Freightfowarder who is willing to
share the profits, the Freight -rate will all
ways be BAD; This has been going on
for years,

Theres a company in Felixstowe offering round trips and 1 way imports from Italy and Spain in the trucking magazines, who want box vans, i dont know anything about them or what the rates are thou. M.E.C Trading Company 01394 451040 277613

if they have to advertise they are no good. thats a rule ive worked on for years. i pulled for mec for 2 years. payment is ok but considering the lengh of time they have been going if you credit check them they are a risk warning. draw your own conclusions with that one.

its well known im in this business as a fowarder now and have a succesfull company. we pay fair rates and run 57 of our own trucks on uk-italy-uk. + 70 odd subbies. and have never had to advertise yet ■■?.

maybe something in my golden rule

Looks like Alcion , NL jobs / rates ?

Spain is going to pick up a bit now… Lack of Fridges down there…
I am paying Valencia to Kent loading Friday £1750.00 Plus a Dover to Calais crossing… If you have trailers in Belgium, France, Holland we can load them.
Regards, Neville. (Heritage, Dover)

Many of these rates are on offer hoping that Baltic State companies and Poles etc, etc take them on their way up.
If you stay your ground you can and will get better rates.
Yes things are picking up in Spain but do not believe that they are short of fridges because 30% of the Spanish fleet is still standing still, they are just waiting for the rates to improve so that they pay as outbound rates, but I must say many Spanish companies are refusing to load because there is a severe scarcity of return freight back to Spain.

Assuming that the Valencia reload above was for a fridge then it is at least 900 to 100 euros below what would normally expected.
The other two are an insult

Many thanks for the replies and comments noted, I’m just lucky that I don’t have to take loads that don’t pay. Neville can you give me a ball park figure regarding the cost of a new Fridge.
r.slicker if you have any one ways for mega box trailers down to Italy, please keep me in mind.
regards

Vascoingles… The rate was indeed for a fridge… Spain is not a big market for our company in any way but we work directly for a number of major importers and we bascially pay whatever the going rate is at any one time. The Spaniards are as you say waiting for the rates to improve but where the Euro is strong the Spainsh are expensive.

JJSL… We have our trailers on contract hire through TIP… We are a fan of the Schmitz brand though and I suspect its going to be a case of doing your own deal… At this point in time you would be able to pick up a baragain I am sure.
If you are serious I can put you in touch… Regards

answer your pm mate.

Neither easterners take jobs for so much less than 1eur/km.
Perhaps 0.90 if the loan/lease for the truck has been paid for.
Anyhting less than that - only if they are desperate not to run back home empty.

I’ve just seen “attractive” haulage offer (by a Swiss(!!!) company): 24t of bottled mineral water, 80x a year, from Zagreb (HR) to Moscow (RU), each trip eur1350.- and that’s about 2200km (where is the sick emoticon?!)
Neither Russians run for 60c/km

Is that the going rate Neville ?. We were getting £2100 in early december 10 years ago. People tell me that due to the credit crunch, which is at least as bad in spain as here means they can’t find loads back to spain from belgium or northern france. Not even the spanish can round trip the uk from valencia for 2 grand and pay 2 ferries. I would be pushing importers for 24 or 25 hundred. It seems freight rates from Valencia are the only that have had negative inflation for the past 10 years. This is probably the only month of the year that fridge hauliers have the upper hand. Give them some stick.

Dont even get me started on this one… If I were to get the rates I was getting ten years ago all woyuld be well in the world I can assure you.
That was the Spanish going rate for that week from that area. The folowing week they had bad weather so the rate dipped… This week (49) no trailers again so the rates are back up.
Spain and Italy are bothe very volatile markets which is why they form less than 5% of our total revenues. Regards

Just remember it is very cheap for them to buy sterling, 20% cheaper than this time last year. Don’t sell yourself too cheap, the spanish citrus exporters “must” move that product this month. They don’t hesitate to stick the boot in when it’s on the other foot. Give me a shout, i’ll come and do it for you.

I’m welshman working for spanish haulier and the rates at moment are bad for us because so many big companies avoiding many european rules by employing romanians for bad money in portugese trucks with spanish trailers. lost 1 trip this month from steelworks in algeciras cos eastern companies doing it cheaper than 80c per km

Try looking for export work, we were offered £720 Telford-Milan and £270 Sittingbourne-Stuttgart and I know a subbie who was offered Canterbury-Calais at “You give us a tenner and we’ll pay for the ferry”.

My main customer has just asked me to drop my rate to Belgium as a company based in Lux. has got Slovac registered trucks and drivers pulling skelly trailers with tank containers on for £150 less than me, told him, no way, so he cut my work load down.

Good reliable service with top quality equipment means nothing.
