You know how the engines are super dooper and clean the air as it goes along etc, they run 40% hotter than euro 5 hence the big grills on the front. Has anyone had any problems with the hot weather we’ve been having? Was bored on the A1 earlier and got me thinking. I’m euro 5 so I don’t know hence the question
Total chuffing waste of time, energy, money & factory capacity. It ain’t even that much cleaner than euro 5, I’ve seen the stats. Should’ve stopped at euro 5 till we’re humming on lecky.
Euro 6 = total BS.

so can you still order a new truck to euro 5 spec? i,m toying with a new MAN but fancied the 540 engine and they dont do it in Euro 6

think it changes sometime next year…
My Daf seems unaffected. Temperature running as normal. Although you wouldn’t want to lean on the catwalk after a run.

She’s getting a full mpg more than the euro 5 Volvo I had.
Apparently Elddis had a euro 6 on test and as it turns out it’s thirsty on fuel, so they ditched it and bought 10 euro 5s .

Can’t say I’ve noticed anything different with our Euro 6’s.
I had a Euro 6 Stralis one night. The only difference I noticed was that I was overtaking everything. So they’re a bit faster than Euro 1-5.
I’ve talked to loads of operators and drivers about Euro 6.
Experience varies from make-to-make. Volvo, Renault and Iveco use more AdBlue than Euro 5, because they don’t use EGR to reduce NOx. All the other makes (apart from the ones that were EGR-only at E4/5, obviously) use less AdBlue than at E5.
I haven’t spoken to anyone who has noticed E6 being noticably heavier on diesel than E5. What make was the ‘thirsty’ E6 truck at Eldis?
there are still some E5 trucks around…I don’t think you can order a new-build one (except a Hino), but there are various pre-reg, cancelled orders etc around. Try the big leasing cos (Ryder etc) who snapped up most of the later E5 build slots. They tended to oder bog standard type vehicles ie 7.5, 18 tonne box & curtains, or 6x2 tractors.
MAN put out lots of E5s on short-term lease and rental in-house, and some of those may be available in the MAN network.

3 trucks parked on the eastbound side of Windy Hill about 2/3 the way up on Monday afternoon when it was very hot, one with a lot of steam coming from the front.

Works got a Euro6 ecostralis as a demonstrator will sit at 57/58 all day but drinks the juice and ad blue like it going out of fashion.

You sure they were euro 6?

You sure gas gas? I thought Iveco were the only brand to achieve euro 6 with pure SCR & no EGR.

You’re so POSH!
No issues with my Euro 6 in this weather… Temperature is as usual, and compared to my last Euro 5 I’m getting 1.7mpg more from the Euro 6…
Oh and it doesn’t use more adblue than the Euro 5 either

You are absolutely right…and so am I!
The Iveco is the only truck with no EGR system at all.
Volvo & Renault DO have an EGR system, but it doesn’t work like the EGR on other makes of truck.
On other makes, you have cooled EGR, some of the gas passes through a matrix like an intercooler and goes back into the engine’s combustion chambers where its high CO2 content reduces peak combustion temperature and hence the formation of NOx. Result: the engine uses slightly more fuel, but a lot less AdBlue.
On Volvo Renault, the EGR is uncooled…the gas goes straight back into the engine. It only does this when the engine is cold and the SCR part of the system wouldn’t be hot enough to work properly without assistance in the form of post-combustion or downstream fuel injection. Now this is either very clever, or complete moonshine, but the man from Volvo told me that its increased CO2 content REDUCES peak temps and therefore NOx formation until the SCR is hot enough to work properly, while the heat from the recirculated gas INCREASES temperatures overall, meaning a faster warm up and a return to optimum efficiency, at which point the ERG system shuts off, AdBlue consumption begins and fuel efficiency rises.
This is a concept thatVolvo has been plaing around with for some years…I remember going to the lauch of th B10M coach, and the guys there saying that the exhaust brake automatically half-closed when the engine was starting up in cold conditions because the hot exhaust being scavenged back into the engine would retain heat and with a cold engine combustion had been incomplete so it would aid combustion. I think Scania trucks had a similar system called the ‘smoke button’ or something…but I can’t remember the details other than the driver had to physically engage it and it would release itself once the engine was firing properly. It stopped white smoke on start up. I many well have this bit wrong, and please correct me if you know better.

Nothing of interest, all XLX cabs and 440 engines with auto boxes, apparently a euro 5 XXL with a 540 engine and manual box just doesnt exist anywhere
Not many recent MANs with manuals of any description.
