That’s what I’m thinking

That F12 was Frank Nash’s motor it was ex Russell Davies Geest contract before it was repainted.Simon Waspe will probably know more tho.

Here are the Crossways photos you wanted Carna

Thanks M T great pictures

Old man Draper (looked a bit like Captain Birdseye) used to live at Benfleet in a big house overlooking Canvey, I think he sold up because neither his son or daughter were interested in the business.

SamSkip never realised they came out of Southend, not a lot came out of Southend, Spectrans, T&R, DRJ to name some that are no longer about.

Thought Halcon only did boats, surprised to see the box vehicles.

From the Stour to the Thames
From the Lea to the Sea
It’s Essex, yes Essex the county for me

Has any one else heard that song■■?

keens was run by laurie keens, his son mick and nephew alec, the yard was at newbury park, near ilford, later they moved to evans old yard behind the ship and shovel,
i worked for them in ilford late 70s early 80s, i had a new f88 on a “s” plate, we were doing mostly benelux then but i think when they moved to barking they concentrated on their container work,
when i first started they running a fleet of powder tanks but, like any other job, the rate cutters move in and mick told me that it wasn`t worthwhile renewing, so he got rid of them all. :frowning: :frowning:

Hi all, great forum, really interesting stuff.
Found it by accident bouncing around the net looking for pics of firms and lorries my dad worked for/i used to see in the 60’s/70’s/80’s, although the 60’s i was a tot and was plonked on top of the engine in dads Scammel Highwayman. I was mad about lorries as a kid, never took my test but did drive Sed Atki 600’s in the RAF on my F500. Still go with my friend sometimes, his dad and mine drove together for Thomas Allen, his dad went onto Henry Smithers then Brains where he was union bod for alot of years. He always asked dad to go to Brains but never did, much to my disgust!! :frowning: Instead i spent time bunking school or mum let me go with him, 40mph round the Nth Circular-no M25… in AEC Mandator/ERF A series/Atki Borderer/ Although when he went to George Davies he brought home a Merc 1626!! Great :astonished: Apart from shunting at Tilbury in a Guy Big J4T. I remember walking over to the tractor plant to see him where he was driving for Neales, an ERF A series/Ford D series, tractors to Harwich. Came home in a Marathon once, i loved it took me and my mates to the shops, he hated it, going to Barking he threw up down the footwell, said it was shake box!
Had a mate when i was a teenager who worked with his fitter dad at Mairs, all F88/89s i think. Canute-dad drove an F86, little egg i called it. /Harris/Bennett/Cabmont/Brains/CGM/ACT/ Used to take photos of the lorries at the tractor plant pulling out Hessanatie trailers, spent long summer days at Tilbury birth 45, memories eh…
Hope i havent bored ya,
Kevin

One of our old drivers Derrick white used to work at Thomas Allen i remember there lorries as Canute always used to buy them you said some good old companies Thomas Allen Henry Smither and Brains i also remember Cabmont when they had lorries on the burmah contract

Carna:

Drapers was a great firm.We used to load out of their yard at thurrock with reels of paper then park up at the logcabin just up the road. One fri iloaded and parked up to go early to get home to bolton.Igot up at 4 00 and on doing the checks found some gent in the night had removed all the bulbs and lenses off my trl.Now any of you who loaded off him knew he had a guard dog loose in the yard, this dog was ok till you put a foot thro. the gate.I shouted and a man came out of the garage,on explaining the prob. he went and got me a full set of lights, which iduly returned the next week, never forgot that they were gents.

think you will find that DRJ still running the trucks out of the old Amstrad site, now for EGL.

Does anybody on here remember when A.E.Evans Regent Transport on Ripple Road,Barking packed up? I worked out of the Sheffield depot from 1969 - 1979 and lost touch when I left. The son,Richard Evans was running into Europe in the late 70s and I think he had two tractors and trailers and I think running for maybe Esso Purfleet with tanks.I do remember he shipped out of Sheerness to Vlisslingen on the Olau ? line.He may have been using Marathons but can’t be sure.
Thanks,
Chris.

I Worked for A E Evans when they was at Barking and Richard was running it all then but he was more interested in REVANS than the other work

DRJ - David Jones sold it all out to EGL at Shoebury and out went the old A and B reg Volvo’s which EGL have now replaced with a newer fleet.
Those old Volvo’s never had limiters fitted, I was in one of the later rigids and left services on the M40 the same time as one of the old Volvo’s, I think the driver was at home in bed by the time I got back to the yard…
