Hi Carna when i started on Neale,s Reg Neale was almost retired. Paul was running the whole company. Basildon moved from the tractor plant and they bought a car sales garage on the old a130 Retterdon and parked the trucks behind. In fords from the Dagenham yard sometimes i would sit with the same load of of racks for 4 days so when i transfered to Barking i was away all over the country Penanze to Wick and do not know what happened to the Ford work for the other 2 depots.Something must have changed. Paul it was said had a breakdown and took over the garage. the younger son Phillip took over and moved into the house at the dagenham yard [with his friend]. There was a downturn in work as they said or they,ed had enough and started to sell off most of the units/trailers. Thats as i know it of course there may have been more to it.
CP Ships/Transport used to park outside Tilbury docks when they had Atki,s
Great storey about Neals RE the Felgate Scania it was used in a artilce in a truck mag and it was also one of the first Scania that Russell Davies had on there when they took over i have a photo of AJN 421X Some where
After Neales i started with Halcons on Canvey, doing drops around the country to BHS stores toilet rolls/bleach anything they needed to run the shops or a home . I was driving one of the rigids which shared the scotch run,
The money on the scotch run was very good but it might have been 1 run a month with having to share it. So i went and did a bit of european then worked for a small company on containers shareing the yard outside Tibury docks with Ritsons from liverpool. I did my CPC,s at night school and went back to Halcons who were then on containers for Brains with 2 trucks. I went on to take over my unit working on Brains also sometimes doing a boat move on Canvey before i went to Brains, i had to phone the traffic police who if it was one of thier own would drive ahead block the road and i could take the rounabout to the right instead of going around it.
Then i would go and do some empty shunting to the docks 1 or 2 boxes on locals some more shunting. Sometimes i would start the empty box run before Brains night drivers finished and be doing some more when they started the next shift. I think by that time theyed given up on me. The maggie had to go back and i went a bought a lhd 141 why who knows. A few months later i was to return to euro work which i did,nt know when i bought the unit.
keep them coming john great pics
Great Halcon photos i always wondered where they came from
The Felgate scania AJN414x was one of ten bought by Russell Davies when they took Felgate’s over and featured in a Truck Magazine road test in early 80’s when the 2 series first came out.The picture was taken at P&O’s Box Lane depot at Barking.[/code]

Was Felgate Transport’s yard on Ripple Road Barking near A.E.Evans Regent Transport and a boozer called the Ship and Shovel?
I used to work for Evans and I’m nearly certain Felgate was nearby.
Felgates yard was in Ripple Road near the Ship and Shovel. Now a bus depot I think.
Heres a bit of nostalgia - Ernie Felgate was married to John Brain’s daughter
(of Brian Haulage fame)
whoops, BRAIN Haulage I mean
No, the F Reg 113 was too new to be ex Felgate, Russell Davies bought a majority shareholding in Felgates about 1981/2. Felgate sold 'em the rest of the shares the following year and the motors went to yellow.
As most people know, Ernie Felgate became a Manager for Brain Haulage for a few years before starting up again. Finished in Truckworld, I believe, a few years ago.
anyone remember cowlards transport in ripple road barking ? i was fitting for them early 80s he ran a fleet of bufferlo’s , plenty of overtime
Carna:
looks like alfie morris driving, if i`m wrong someone will let me know.
Didn’t the bloke who run RTS end up in the office at McKellars
The F reg 113 was ex Russell Davies and was one of 3 trucks bought from the company by Steve Ersser who was a subcontractor for us at the Barking depot. He left and set up Rts working for Hellmans at Rainham. The other trucks if I remember were another 113 B247XOO and a F12 A749JVF,the drivers that went with them were Harry Towler and Frank Nash both really nice fella’s.
Think your right newmercman sure there was a tie-up between Steve and Mckellars at that time as iirc he was running to Italy most of the time…
They were a decent bunch on RTS, I remember the faces but not the names, I pulled into Jayat one Sunday afternoon on the way back from Naples & they used to do a changeover there, the bloke coming up from Italy hadn’t made it & the bloke going down had his bird with him who had to be back at work on the Monday, so I ended up giving her a lift home, IIRC the bloke was half caste & the bird was Irish, sure she was a nurse. before anyone says it, no I didn’t
where did RTS park there lorries and was Neals old depot on the A13 just passed Ripple road
