What did Brain Haulage use these 6 wheeler tractors for?
I’m guessing like us the tag was added on as the new 38 tonne gross on 5 axle rule came in. We had units converted in one of the old London docks, name escapes me but you drove in one end of the shed and 8 hours later you drove out the other end …voila!
They were used for tilt work from dover after Ernie Felgate sold out to Glynn Davis Ernie being Charles son in law was given a job in Dagenham depot and 12 vehicles were con verted i had a f10 and a 190 38 done at the same time the firm was called Trailer systems at Waterdon road Hackney later at royal docks and Barking good jobs but to long you could get a 20’box between the cab and the trailer denbys would have liked it the air lines were about 16 ft long
mike t:
Here are a couple from opposite ends of the county
I drove for continental for M&S The 111 in the picture was on contract from Brain haulage, it was driven by either Dave Terry, John Stowe or Bob Ellis,I had a F10 after the Brain contract finished and the vehicles were supplied by Trux Hire.

Thats the company, I took in a Renault 305 for conversion.
Can anybody remember the name of a haulier from Billericay with green Scanias (I think) and did fruit haulage amongst other things. They used to run into our depot at Maltby in the late 70s and early 80s and one of their drivers was well over retiring age-a little old feller he was.We used to have a good laugh with him.
Didn’t realise till today that we have a Harwich shunter in our yard!!

Eyup,a third class ride’s better than a first class walk AND you wouldn’t have to wind any legs up and down when you got to Harwich.
Very true Chris.I don’t think I’ve got the strength any more.Got to wind up some legs tomorrow.Going caravanning for a week or so.Must be mad.Hope for some good reading on my return. Regards Charlie

Brains motors were converted at Vehicle Systems Engineering, Waterden Road, Stratford, London E15 - not Trailer Systems!
I had two converted at the same time - over five grand each in 1983, I don’t think it would be much more now!
And yes they were converted for the 38 tonne maximum that came in on 1.5.1983,
Merzario only had two axled trailers and only certain hauliers could supply them - first on the road on 1.5.83 was BJ Myers with 11 six wheelers, Brains 12 next and Chiaramello from Ramsgate with two or three Mercs.
Brains were always overweight due to the large amount of gold worn by their drivers!
Whats the link between Kerbey Motors & Essex International.

Remember seeing a photo of Brain himself, I seem to recall him wearing a very large flashy watch.
I Thinks these were converted about the same time as Brains were
