I think Beresford had about 15 of these 5MWs but only one of them had LHD. It was driven all over Europe by John Heath, who is an excellent source of information on the REVS team. He took the first picture below. Happy New Year! Robert

This is a thread that ought to be kept alive.The smaller LHD ERF ‘European’ with the 5MW cab and its Euro-spec chassis was clearly an attractive unit in its day. However, the difference between the domestic and European versions of this ERF was significant. The Euro-spec version had the powerful ■■■■■■■ NTC 335 for a start. To be realistic, it was rather out of date by the 1970s in comparison with its European opponents, with its non-tilting cab.

Nonetheless, the ERF NGC with its taller, roomier, tilting 7MW cab simply overtook it entirely from 1973 onwards, though the cheaper 5MW options remained available alongside both the NGC ‘European’ and the B-series.

I’ve been in touch again with Chris Till, who has given me permission to post this picture of a LHD 5MW on British plates he photographed on one of his trips to Baghdad driving a 7MW-cabbed NGC. Reg no. is GFH 727N. Robert

I see what you mean. Well, it’s on an N-plate (1974-75) and 5MW cabs came in during January 1973. Perhaps the cab was old stock. The lorry was doing ‘internals’ apparently. Robert

I would add that the 5MW and 7MW cabs started within days of each other, if you remember. There was no cross-over period for the 3MW / 5MW: both the last 3MW cab and the first 5MW cab left ERF on the same day, the day before the unveiling of the 7MW cab in Jan '73. It is possible, then that this vehicle was re-cabbed with a 2nd-■■■■■■■■. Robert

The white one with the vertical grille and a trailer is a 5MW, of course. I meant the unregistered tractor above it- that one has 3MW lamps.

Oh THAT one! Sorry Anorak, I’ve just re-read your original post and it quite clearly refers to the black & white pic and not the Chris Till photo below it. Yes, I believe we identified that as a 3MW some time ago so I shouldn’t have used it as an example :blush: . Cheers! Robert :smiley:

Talking of 3MW-cabbed ERFs: will will remember the Andre Lecocq 6x4 unit from Belgium (pic below to remind you)…

…well, I’ve just stumbled upon a colour picture of it (or its sister perhaps?) - see blow. Great road-scape too, to give it context. And a very tasteful livery, I think. Robert

To my humble opinion this road is the R11 (Autolei / Krijgsbaan) near Antwerp-airport.
In fact between Mortsel and Deurne in the direction of the E34-highway.

That’s correct. It’s another picture of the outfit the Belgians tested before ERF upgraded the cab to 5MW standard. The full article is on this thread somewhere! Robert
