ERF 'European' (1975)

This might be a “new” one…?

Alas no. But keep 'em coming! Robert

Borrowed from another thread this weekend! Robt

I’ve just found this picture by Peter Davies in the August issue of Classic Truck magazine. You can see a 7MW cab propped up in the background! I wonder if Hinkely’s owned one, or was the picture taken in an ERF dealership. Frustratingly, I bought the mag yesterday at Gaydon and I was actually carrying it when I spoke to Peter himself. I could have shown him the picture and asked! I’ll send it to him as see if he can remember it. Another mystery! Robert

@ ^^above pic: another member has just contacted me to point out that there is what appears to be another 7MW cab beyond the visible one. Robert

Re ^^ above picture: I am assured by Peter Davies that the pic was indeed taken at the ERF works, which of course makes sense. Robert

Forgot to mention Rob, that according to the chap that posted this photo when the lorry had the engine
rebuild in the 80s it was tweaked to 500 bhp ! Would have been a real beast !

Think this may be a new one of Pountains, nice clear pic.

Re DB-77-52, I find that very surprising! Its ■■■■■■■ 335 was overhauled in '86, so it might have been tweeked then, but 500bhp sounds a bit ambitious for an elderly NTC small-cam 335. Mind you, this thread is full of surprises!

Re UGE 852R, a good find - I’ve not seen that picture before!

Cheers,

Robert

Maybe what might have been a logical 400 big cam upgrade at that point has got confused over the years with the less likely idea of a 500 hp small cam rebuild. :bulb:

That’s what I suspect. Unless, of course, he was referring to a unit of measurement other than BHP. Robert

Does not say what engine was in it when tweaked.

It’s doubtful that they could have found 500 hp from a small cam.But this shows the steps required in going for 500 from a big cam which seems the most likely suspect. :bulb:

Although checking the photo again closely it doesn’t seem to have the twin exhausts advised in the info.

While the thing looks like it’s running at more than 80 mph in the photo just standing still. :smiling_imp:

We already know from Wobbe Reitsma’s visit to interview Cees and take pictures that the 335 was overhauled along with the rest of the unit in '86. It was only used as a local shunter by then until its withdrawal and disposal in '89. Robert

Perhaps it had had another, later engine fitted before the interview, and it simply wasn’t mentioned. Robert

I would like to mark the passing of John Goodreid (‘Saviem’) on this thread by quoting his comments on the ERF NGC, which he witnessed being tested by TRUCK mag in Belgium in 1975 when he was with the Saviem team; and which I quoted in my book.

‘What a stonking hooligan of a lorry, so much power, such a crude finish, such a DRIVER’S motor. Shot up that big hill at Spa and the bendy bit at Houffalize: the ERF blew holes in the Scania 140.’

May John rest in peace. Robert

Blimey that sounds like two different vehicles are possibly being referred to ?.IE probably no way that the 335 small cam could have got any where near to 500 hp at any point in its life and would all that customising have been bothered with just for a local shunter heading for the scrap yard ?.

Just the one vehicle, painted in a client’s colours. He did have another one, which we know about, painted in another client’s colours. Robert
