ERF 'European' (1975)

Just a note on the three ‘imposters’ regarding their original cabs, before they were each replaced by a 7MW cab: the Pacific presumably had one of their own cabs; the Pountains vehicle originally had a 6MW cab and the Cauvas vehicle had a 3MW cab (if it is indeed the same Hye vehicle pictured above). Robert

A rough calculation shows the wheelbase of the Cauvas unit to be about the same as the wheelbase of the Hye unit shown in the black & white picture. I wonder where the 7MW cab came from. Was it sourced new from ERF UK? According to Wobbe Reitmsa’s article this vehicle was supplied to Cauvas in 1975, so it was a bit too early for the cab to have been taken from a scrapped NGC in Belgium. Well, we know that 7MW cabs were available for the Loste Pacific and the Pountains MDC 852 so perhaps the cab was simply ordered from ERF. Another mystery! Robert

Blimey, I haven’t seen that one before! I’ll pop it on the LHD ERF B-series thread. Cheers! Robert

Here’s a new NGC pic of the ■■■■■■■ unit.

A Happy New Year to all followers of the fortunes of the mysterious 91 ERF NGCs that marched from Sandbach into the mists of the 1970s! Robert

To all the ERF drivers a happy new year.

Eric,

The HYE ERF was a trade-in after the severe accident. That was autumn 1974
as also the SCHEUERLE low-bed-trailer was on offer but too pricy.

Thank you for that! Yes, the dates fit because Wobbe Reitsma listed it has having commenced work (presumed new, I suppose) in 1975. Cheers, Robert

I lost (the pedals) on Wobbe whatever…ERF was quite a presence in Belgium,
as my husband encountered a lot of ERF-chassis and not only tippers or chassis
related to roadbuilding. We had joint ventures with BETONAC and SOGETRA and
performance on presence and NOT on our equipment. When we had jobs in all
directions of Belgium, Holland, Germany, France and Switzerland, the brand of
your trucks and trailers was MINOR, but at the end of the day your result WAS!!

There were about five main dealers with inventory on spare parts but when the
market was international and not local ERF was absent, home market and lack
of availability of trucks. My wife’s nephew understood that Van Steenbergen was
about to replace its whole fleet with ERF as their fleet was ‘left-over’ but via the
importer NO feedback…finally Scania was offered…brrrr what a failures

For that time ERF had quite some branches/dealers, even in small Belgium, with dealers
in Leuven (Brandt), Gent (Universal), Kortrijk (Universal) and Hasselt (Fransen) to supply
parts and service. It’s been quite a long time ago but I estimate Fred and Ray Denonville
sold about 100 ERF-chassis. Their business was much large with ■■■■■■■ and other brands.
Somewhere I should have a service booklet with all their names stated…how to find it…

We are not quite a virgin in transport but pfff what a thread and hick-ups…to scroll here
is quite a survival and personal issues…I know of Comart and JML (ex-Giraud Group) who
had several ERF-chassis and to my opinion easy to find on the internet.

Well, how inefficient those eighty pages end in a small crop of nice heritage.

For sure driver’s talk, in a respectful way

Some evidence from my brother in law…as he recalls a visit from a Flandres-representative
dealing with ERF, ■■■■■■■ and Scania then…we had a project in the western part of Belgium
and like bees on the honey we got attention with our fleet and aggregates/generators.

What they (then) didn’t know is the fact we were (indirectly) customers…so Universal was on
the road to sell …?

A scan…with the stamp/mark of Universal, also located in Kuurne/Kortrijk in those days it
was common to deal with French

We notice that Gruwez (helping us out with heavy loads) did purchase quite some products

Just a shot in the dark here: I believe one of Van Steenbergen’s NGCs (No. 19 / L.423.R) was kept for spares following an accident. I wonder if the 7MW cab and engine replacements for the Hye/Cauvas unit were sourced from the stricken Arenkonk vehicle. Robert

A note to anyone contemplating creating a model (not me!) of the NGC with its 7MW cab: the big front grille panel is subtly shaped - it is very slightly bowed at the sides and top, unlike the Scammell Crusader grille; as exemplified by the illustration. Robert :exclamation:

Looking back over my notes, I see that Rene P informed me that DB-77-52 was taken out of service and ‘sold to an Englishman’ rather than scrapped. I wonder what became of it, then? Robert

At last, we have a name for the photographer of these early promo pics: Alan Rickett, who was ERF’s publicity officer. I have recently been in touch with him. Robert

I’ve just been on the ASAM Models (1:48 scale trucks) of Farnham site: bit of problem on the ERF NGC front, I’m afraid! They’ve just brought out a set of beautifully detailed models of metal-cabbed ERFs and the NGC is wrong.

The 7MW-cabbed NGCs are catalogued A302 (4x2 unit) and B302 (6x4 unit). It’s the WRONG CAB!! They’ve used the Motor Panels Mk 4 short cab instead of the tall one (like the Scammell Crusader). What a waste of effort! Furthermore they’ve called it an ERF ‘Continental’: it was Bentley that made ‘Continentals’, not ERF - it should, of course, be ‘European’. ERF never used the name ‘Continental’.

Then there some small details, as follows:
Model B300A has a 6MW cab, not a 4MW cab as stated; and it is not a ‘Continental’ as stated OR a ‘European’ for that matter.
Model B300B has a correct 4MW cab but is still not a ‘Continental’ as stated OR a ‘European’ for that matter.
Models A301A and A301B have correct 5MW cabs but are only ‘Europeans’ if they have LHD and are certainly not ‘Continentals’.

The models themselves are beautiful.

However, it is a bit of a disappointment for NGC fans.

^^^^^I’ve just emailed the manufacturer a sheet with the correct dimensions and a diagram / plan for the NGC/7MW. I’m not going to hold my breath. :unamused: Robert

Well, I understand that the models are now to receive their correct names, after all  . However, nothing can be done about changing the squat 7MW cab  . Robert
