ERF A, B & C series

This is my old girl, as restored in August 2000, on the way back from the ERF Coming home/Moving home event at Sandbach & Middlewich. Sorry it’s a bit of a naff picture (of a picture), but I’ve yet to scan any of my ‘proper’ photo’s into my PC, and it’s my first attempt at putting pictures on here.

If it works, there should be more to follow, so come on all you ERF nuts, let’s get some big numbers on this topic!!

All a bit new,but still ERF’s.

Hi Bewick, she has a Fuller 11609a and a Rockwell R180. Like the majority of ERF’s around that time (pre-CP series) the rest of Fine Fare’s ERF fleet had the Kirkstall back end. EUR 316Y was also the only C40 and 290 Roller on the fleet - never did find out why this unit was a one-off. The rest were C36 and later C32’s with the 265. Fine Fare even persisted with Rollers when they became non-standard on the CP range.

Don’t think they experienced much trouble with the RR’s, but they were hardly worked to death… double-shifting was occasional and each driver had his own motor, so mileages were low. I’ve got the old odometer readings for 316Y somewhere, I’ll try & dig 'em out.

Hiya GCR2ERF nice bit of gen there although I’m not familiar with your spec.It must have been quite a powerful motor in its day though!I was always told that it was mainly the big Oil companies/Supermarkets and other large own account operators that specced the RR when they placed large fleet orders with ERF/Atki/Foden.The RR was a cheaper option than the ■■■■■■■ and the big own account fleets were not overly worried in those days about running costs or residual value-----just the cheapest initial cost per unit. However the old motors that have survived into preservation whatever their spec must be admired all the same!I’m just looking at things with my old “Hauliers” hat on and there was not a chance in hell of me ever entertaining a RR engined Atki/ERF or Seddon!!! Cheers Bewick.

Dennis that is probably why you never had any crusaders on the fleet then as the alternative to the rolls engine is something that would get me my P45 if I mentioned it on one of your threads.   :unamused:

cheers Johnnie

Hiya Johnnie, the Crusader was ok as a military motor but as a domestic haulage machine----do me a favour!!!Cheers Dennis.

Dennis the crusader was a drivers wagon so I guess the bosses wouldn’t like them. They were on top of the job and would out perform the continentals especially from a standing start in fact they could accelerate quicker than cars when empty. I will admit they were slightly more powerful than the 110s and 240 f88 which were out at the time and the rest of the imports were all under powered then. The gear box was a big factor as well as most of the continentals were synchromesh gear boxes which were a bit ponderous at the time but the crusader was excellent on tanker work and the constabulary on the 74 used to be after us quite often. :unamused:

cheers Johnnie

P S I could always contaminate your thread and tell you the alternative engine by typing it :unamused:

Hi Folks,

And here’s me thinking you are(were) a fine up-standing gentleman not as it now appears "a devious little, nasty T***!!! Cheers Dennis.

Dennis my dear old mum RIP would never have said I was a gentleman or probably not used nice to describe me but thanks for the compliment as I usually get abused and told that I am not right in the head and such things :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:
cheers Johnnie

Nice mix of ERFs in Haydons yard Biddulph, North Staffs, 1986 although that’s not the original grille on the LV - SMA 13H had a light prang and got a slightly later facelift

This is a shot of the 2nd B Series we got and is on the morning that I’d collected it from Sandbach and returned to the depot.
