ERF A, B & C series

Some more from Gaydon.

Hiya Malc,I thought power steering was standard on the “A” series—as they say you learn something every day!!! But I think “our Lad” (■■■■) knocked P/S of the spec sheet so as to save a few bob!!Well he had to see that his Racehorses were well looked after didn’t he!! Cheers Dennis.

Hi Dennis,
RWT 444K was also specced without power steering but must have became standard later
as RYG 555M came with it fitted.Could never understand why because all the Leylands and Albions they
had all had power steering.Few bob saved also went towards the Rolls Royce!!!

Cheers Malc.

bubbleman:
Heres another old Henleys “B” series.

Cheers Bubbs,

Where did that fuel tank come from

Never been a fan of the old ‘plastic pig’ myself , decent egines gearbox etc. but always let down by poor build quality & cheap+ crappy interior trim

Power steering was an option right through the A Series range. You could tell at a glance if an A Series had P/S, those with it had a smaller grey steering wheel, but those without had a larger black one.

Well ERF I here what you say about the steering wheels, however, this was one of two “A” series we ran that had the large diameter black wheel and also the ZF power steering!!!

This a shot of the 2nd B series we got for double shift, this one only had the one air stack, the first one had dual filters and two stacks. This ERF is standing brand new and un-registered in the depot. From memory it’s reg no. was UEC536V Sept '79.The spec was 8LXB/Fuller 9509/Kirkstall HR.Fleet name “Moonlight Express”.

Dave the Renegade:

Is that your “Moggy 1000” van in the background Dave!!! Super shots though! Dennis.

No Dennis, never had a Morris 1000 van Dennis, had a bang in one belonging to a builder I worked for,a Ford Popular without brakes came down a hill straight into the side of me,nothing serious.Good little vans, especially with the speedo moving up and down whilst mobile. This is at Welland show, taken by Roy Morgan.

Here’s another cracking ERF,I was involved with the restoration of this vehicle over a number of years, the second snap was taken at Corbridge alongside the first ERF ever built.

Noted - it was not unheard of for some vehicles with P/S to have the black wheel, but GENERALLY they didn’t.
It was unheard of in my experience for a non P/S truck to have a small grey wheel - you would have never turned it!!.

Full house here! McGuffie tractor and a McG.curtainsider.This c/sider was one of the first three we got and were ex York Warrington.I used as a base for the bodies two single axle 26ft trls.ex the paper mill which the two Boden axles were made tandem under an extended 26ft chassis, and I had a new York tandem assembly put under the other extended chassis.I then had another ex mill 30ft tandem stretched for the 3rd body. This was circa '78 at a time when all our traffic went on flats and I wasn’t to sure about these “new fangled” curtainsiders!! So I did the next best thing which worked out well financially but ultimatley the York body wasn’t in the same leauge as the Bo-Alloys we started to take delivery of in '79.Dennis.

Dead right there ERF I never liked the little wheel! was it so as a “big” driver had more “belly” room? I also remember that Atki Borderers had the red/brown wheel superceded by a stupid smaller diameter one for a while! You couldn’t understand why as the red wheel was an iconic symbol of the Atki!!! I think it could have been the Redmonds from Seddon trying to de-mean the Walton-le Dale product!!! Cheers Dennis.

I was always led to believe that the Sandbach product was called an ERFKINSON in deference to the superior products that were made at Walton-le-Dale!!! Bewick.
