This is a shot of our first ERF “A” series seen when new in the yard at Milnthorpe Sept '73. At the time we were struggling to get Atki’s so when Eden Commercials of Carlisle offered us an “A” series more or less the same spec as the Borderer I jumped at it!!! 220 ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ 609/Kirkstall HR.This was a smooth running tractor but never seemed to pull like the Atki’s.
Another shot of this tractor but from the rear this time, the back of the ■■■■■■■ 220 is clearly visible! More shots of “all round” should/have been taken, not just frontal ones!! Bewick
A nice shot of two of our “A” series in the depot at Milnthorpe. The N reg is a 240LXB which we supplied new to a Milnthorpe owner driver John E.Ion and then when he took delivery of a new “B” series we bought the "A"Series back off him.He only did about 40,000 miles per year (one round trip per week Glasgow/London) so really the big Gardner was only “run in” when we got it back. From memory we sent it to Daventry and it ran up and down to the south east turning one of the night trunks round, mainly a 33ft trailer into a carrier then change trailers and load 20 ton of pulp for the mill at Beetham. The P reg one ran on nights from Milnthorpe to Daventry but mainly with a load of Bowater tissue out-bound and back with pulp for Beetham or 20ton of coreboard ex Reeds Tovil straight back to Barrow.
A shot of a 2nd hand ERF we ran seen on the fuel pump in the Yard in Milnthorpe.Initially we double shifted it from Dudley, nights up to Milnthorpe and days to London.
This is a shot of the “Y” reg C38(mate to the two “X” reg’s) the tractor was about 3 years old at this time and we had transferred it to the J & J Makin depot on Kingsway Rochdale. We had taken over Makins in-house fleet of Sed/Atks and boosted it with the transfer of our ERFs,the two X regs followed later but the colour scheme had been changed to blue in-stead of Bewick red.

Dennis it is great, I had a great time in the sixties driving mainly ERF’s. Sadly I had a devastating fire at home and lost
a lot of my old pictures (which I had promised myself I would scan) Luckily enough my digital pictures were backed up
else where so I managed to save a few. regards Big Al

And this is a shot of NEC299P in her twilight years seen here as the yard shunter and used by our Tyre/Trailer fitter. It was such a handy little tractor for the job. I remember one hot August bank holiday coupling her up to a dodgy Ross Young fridge unit with jumper leads to keep the motor running and the Temp at --22 degrees. The old girl ran for circa 48 hours, just ticked over like a little clockwork watch!! It really was one of,if not,my favourite motor along with Atki OJM480L!! Dennis.
