One of the four âA Seriesâ rigid drawbar chassis built. The last one (Chassis 24048) was exhibited at the Earls Court show in 1972, but by then it was known that the âA Seriesâ chassis in itâs current form was unsuitable for a rigid vehicle, and all rigid vehicles continued to utilise the old underslung chassis until the arrival of the âB Seriesâ, which featured a much modified new frame.

JOHNok,im new on here, that joe barton erf brings back memories, joe was the 1st guy i drove for when i passed my class 1. i drove an artic for joe a B series with 240 gardner and jennings sleeper, reg KCP 285 S, i then moved on to a C series with a 265 gardner reg RUD 9 X, a guy called peter traynor was the man who had the job of keeping em all on the road, he got the only brand new ERF joe ever bought a E series E14 320, peter is a o/d now with a 580 topline scania painted in the same near colours as joe bartons was. cheers. btw joe parked all his ERF s in an old train tunnel.
I think RUD 9 X was an ex. Meachers of Southampton unit, when I used to park in Western esplanade I used to hear those 8 cyl ERFâs go out at night, they sounded really sweet.
RUD 9 X is an ex R K Browning motor from Leighton Buzzard, they had her new the same time as Meachers got theirs, I had her when I worked there, good bit of kit, went all over the UK and never let me down. Here we are in the yard circa 1983.

This is one of Bubbs scrapbook clippings taken from the Southampton thread, not sure where RUD 9 X came from, think hinclifes of bury might have sold it to joe barton, i seem to remember allmans of the stoke area having RUD 7 X, not 100% sure tho.
Hi Chembro, RUD 9 X was new to R K Browning, there is a photo of us on my last posting on this thread. Cheers, Andy.
I think this old girl has been mentioned on here before but not sure if any pics posted? But no matter, another look is worth it, because you never see conversions like this any more in our bland-Transport world
Can you imagine a company directorâs face these days if you pulled into the yard with a motor looking like that?

The funny, or sad part, would be that even if it hadnât been âmodifiedâ, and it was standard with ERF written across the grill, chances are your modern day Transport âManager/Directorâ still wouldnât know what it was!!! Regards Chris
