i dug a little further into this and found out ‘asylum seeker’s’ would get a property before me, as would any nationality with kids even if they left there country having had a home in that country.Just to put things straight: asylum seeker will get the flat before me as well. And if you have property in Poland you will get harder to get a council flat here than someone who don’t (it’s not matter if Polish or British).
Problem is that it’s almost impossible to check for British councils so many Polish people just lie about that (and, to give the fair view, many don’t speak english enaugh to understand what are they asked about).
I think that it’s very bad that such people are able to gain a property before someone who is really in need. There should be possibility to check such things and if you don’t speak english and want to live in Britain: that should be your problem, not the councils.
The problem here is one of priorities, and the liberal-left mafia who control many town halls are so politically correct, that they have lost all notion of fairness and common sense.
Council waiting list requirements have been skewed by having to fulfill criteria based on need alone, which means that a large family will be housed first etc. Which is why that nice Somali family straight off the boat from Mogadishu have moved in next door to you, when people you know have been on the waiting list for five years or more.
I agree this probably happens, but you also get loads of MMTM stories of immigrants getting priorities, although they might have a very small base in fact, such as an Local doesn’t get a house, but they probably never would have. They get exagrated and do the rounds adding fuel to the fire.

It is deplorable that this happens. Priority should always be given to local, British born people first, regardless of other considerations. Then should come British born people, the EU nationals and finally, those from elsewhere.My opinion is that people who come here to work should not expect to get, nor should they get, social housing. Why there are so many people here from outside the EU is another question entirely, especially those who are living off the welfare system and who don’t work. It is a fact that 80% of Somali’s in the UK are living on welfare, which comes from the taxes we all pay. Nice
But people still complain when British people get priority, such as young single mothers etc. Basically the housing stock was sold off and not replaced.
As far as most councils are concerned Social housing is not for the average working man.
and the reason the 80% of Somali’s are living on welfare is that they are Asylum Seekers and therefore not legally allowed to work for 6 months and after that they are in a job market with very little usefull skills.
Of course one solution would be reception centre’s for asylum seekers. This would benefit everybody.
It means less pressure on those councils where most of these people end up and less resentment from the local population and for the asylum seeker it would be a refuge safety from what they are running from.
And whilst they are there they can have access to Education, learn English, learn about the culture and traditions of this country, learn a trade.
They can have access to proper health care.
Of course it won’t happen.
One side will complain about them being prisons for inocent people.
The other side will complain about the luxury they are living in at tax payers expense.
and of course it would cost money and nobody will wants one near them.
