End of an era again on R2

Johnny Walker retiring from radio at 79.
I remember him on R1 when I was at school, and listening to the new chart countdown at dinnertime break.
Used to listen to his drivetime show on R2 about …20 years ago now, and I listened to his Sounds of the 70s show on the I player.

Absolutely. Always said it’ll be curtains for Radio 2 once Johnnie goes. I’ll certainly be tuning in to SOT70s on 27th October.
Will miss him.

Well that’s all folks for R2
If I worked or just ran out Sunday afternoon I would listen to sounds of the 70’s
RIP Radio2
Once Ken left and Steve died it was a matter of time before Jonny gave up
What about whispering bob ?

Bob is taking over sounds of the 70s

Yeah, I liked JW too, I remember as a kid (about 1973) listening to his daytime programme.

I recall especially that he had a feature where he wanted to hear from listeners who had a birthday that coincided with the date they were born, I remember thinking I would write in for the day when I was 12 years old, as my birthdate is the 12th of the month.

He always seemed like a bit of a gentleman, in comparison to some of his colleagues who seemed a bit too up themselves

Sad news, he is my all time favourite DJ. I go back with Johnnie Walker almost to the beginning, I did listen to Radio England back in '66 but can’t say whether I consciously heard him. However in '66 & '67 I was a regular listener under the bedclothes to his Caroline ‘Kiss in the Car’ programme at 9 pm. I was too young unfortunately to take part.

One of the few DJs/presenters who actually sound to be genuinely nice guys, and not false playing up to their radio image.
Along with Steve Wright, Ken Bruce, and Gary Davies imo.

Don’t mention Steve Wright to someone on here! Forget who it is but he ain’t keen on him

Say what you like mate, Steve was a radio lege.
I even remember him on Radio Luxembourg.

Been listening to his tribute shows on BBC I player, including his old shows on R1 of which I was an avid listener.
Great memories.

Sure he got a bit stale towards the end, but like everything else, you dont miss someone to they are gone.

I’m saying nothing. I could take him or leave him.

he WAs dodgy . At the time of the savile enquiry he kept schtum- but theyd ran shows together so many times in the 70s-80s . Stevo knew him well but said nothing, that to me says everything .

i never sensed JW was a wrong un. It is a mecca for wrong uns the Radio jock world . A chap i knew who sold truck parts was a DJ eves on Radio Norwich[or something similar ] he let me in on a few secrets . He got to know Rick Wakeman he is decent but rick told him about the wrong uns a lot of the djs loved young girls i cant understand that , an adult should be attracted to an adult,no exceptions

And here he is

Steve did not join R1 until 1980 so I cant see where you got it that they did shows pre 80s.

As for TOTP I can never recall them doing shows in the 80s as co.presenters either… unless you know different?

:joy:
Young girls?
Unless you mean under 16 what is problem
Those guys at the time were 20s and early 30s anyway.

You’d better condemn me also then.

I was not in the same league as R1 DJs, but I certainly ‘reaped the benefits’ of being a resident DJ on a holiday camp at the time…Or would you have re.acted differentlly when it was handed to you on a plate, almost continuously.

he was on radio 1 in the 70s .i know that as i recall a conductor on the school bus with him on the little radio he carried 78 at latest . At the time he came over as a rebel type. im sure him and saville had a show together too. Saville and stevo both put out a devil may care young girls ooooo image . this was when radio 1 was on AM , before it went to FM

if you are still drawn to young girls as in 16-20 now- then you need watching in my opinion.

I listened to R1 1053/1089 regular at that time, I still can not recall them co.hosting shows.
You need to provide some links/proof mate, you may well be right.

Where did I say NOW?
You need to read things as you see them, rather than how you WANT to see them mate
Knob.

i never liked steve but i did like Saville back then that how i recall . Could be they were also sidekicks on those roadshows they did at places like Minehead /Yarmouth
