Pete, who was your dad? I worked at Thomas Allens (P&O Roadtanks) in the port when they took on the Castrol contract. Worked there from about 1987-1999.
Was one of their youngest drivers in the uk at the time being only 25 and on tankers when that really was the job to have.

Hi Jamie, IIRC, Brady’s had a number of trucks at Ellesmere Port… I think it was to do with running paper from the paper mill to Barrow.
Not sure about this, but I think their drop in Barrow wasn’t that far from their yard.
I can picture the drop on the right as you head into Barrow (A590■■), but I can’t remember the name of it.

Not an Ellesmere Port haulage company but how many remember Jos Millican from Sandysike(Sandisyke?) near Longtown who used to run rough timber to Bowaters at E.Port, maybe they are still going. Then there was Philmac of course who have been mentioned on here in another topic like A.S.Jones. There are stacks of them but trouble is I can’t recall their names at the moment.
jos millican had a office in liverpool at the corn exchange farming work out to local transpot companys of the dock and back loading his own
Does anyone remember a firm called ‘Alfred Edwards’ in the 'Port? I was chatting to an old guy who used to drive for them when I was waiting at the hosp the other day.
Chris Webb:
Didn’t your dad drive for Castrol Pete? I know they had a depot around E.Port but they had one at Hyde as well. They were always having dodgys on the Dog and Partridge pub on Woodhead, picked 'em up many a time in a morning.
Hi Chris, I can remember loading at Castrol in Hyde in the late 80’s with Hanson’s from Huddersfield, 80x45 gallon drums on a flat trailer to Castrol in Ellesmere Port. I know that Hanson had some flat trailers on the Castrol contract but can you remember if they had any tankers on it .
Best regards Steve.

Cheers Graham, I know where u mean - by Halfords at the bottom of the Port, is Nickerson’s yard still down there by the Boat Museum?…They have built some Apartment blocks on that site - do you remember when Nickersons opened up a Saviem dealership there in the seventies ?
…those “French motors with the funny column change gearlever”.
Hi Graham, here’s a couple of Nickerson’s Pics, which Bubbs has kindly me me copy from his ever interesting Scrapbook Memories thread. Thanks Bubbs :-
Although since they both have Lincolshire area registrations, I’m not sure in they were based at the ’ Port?
Not exactly off subject but I am a bit of a foreigner to most of these companys and the area…
No one has mentioned No Nail Boxes Ltd. of Saltney. They were an own account company with a fleet of BMC artics. During the time of the Suez crisis in 1957 strict fuel rationing was imposed and No Nail Boxes had no fuel. Prior to this they used to come down to Bristol to collect cardboard boxes from English Corrugating Paper Co. but were unable to do so with no fuel. We had plenty so we used to take the loads up to Saltney to be greeted by the MD, Gerald Nabarro MP. who would come out into the yard, hand me a 10/- note, 2 lads would jump into the cab and off we would go into Trafford Park to tip. Return to Saltney and it was another 10/- and load for Llandarcy oil refinery nr. Swansea. During this period C licence operators were allowed to carry customers goods. I used to get back to Newport (Salop) and stay in digs for the night and then next morning on to Llandarcy with about 9 tons of plywood boxes folded flat in the back of a 7 ton Bedford SBO van. By the time I was tipped I used to make it back to Severn Tunnel Junction and catch the train home to Bristol for a “dodgy” night and catch the 7.30am train down in the morning for the return via Gloucester. I think I did this for about 2 months. I was very sorry when fuel rationing ended.
Cheers Wessex, some great detail there ! I remember the ‘No-Nail’ factory in Saltney and the flamboyant Sir Gerald Narbaro MP with his handlebar moustache!
George Mayers Atki tipper, although it did later turn into a Merc 1619, carried Red Oxide powder, it was a by-product of some process or other I know not in Shotton.
