Ellesmere Port, South Wirral and Chester Firms

bigr250:
As I remember didn’t OB used to do the carbon black from Cabbot Carbon?

Hi bigr250, yes mate, OB Transport definately did the Cabot Carbon job out of Ellesmere Port.

I went along as a passenger with one of OB’s drivers in an F86 on a run from Cabot’s to a drop in Manchester.
There were no pallets, and the whole 40’ trailer load (sacks) had to be handballed and carried upstairs at the customer’s premises.
That was in the days when the M56 started at Chester services and ended at the Daresbury exit.!! :open_mouth:

It seems as though the old firms are disappearing at an alarming rate. I remember my first job on a chemical tanker delivering into Freeman Chemicals and now the Cabot plant is closing.

We did a job running the cetane improver around Europe from the old Octel sites in Ellesmere Port and Amlwch.

Delving into the memory bank (rather dangerous when I do that :grimacing: ) and remembering what other posters have written on this topic, I’ll chuck a few other names in, in no particular order.

Carter’s Removals (already mentioned,) but who remembers their first yard, which later became Ted Fisher’s? OB’s used to park there sometimes too. BTW, I still see Ian Carter on an almost daily basis, cos he lives further down my street.

There was also a car transporter firm on Rossmore Ind. Est, but I can’t remember the name of it.
(Was it Abbey Hill/Toleman’s/MCD??)

EDIT #1: Pete Wayman and his Dad(Charlie?).
EDIT #2: Norman’s Haulage, Neston
EDIT #3: Darlington’s, … Corfe stone

…and, just becasue I can’t remember  , who can remind me of the name of the cement works that was on the corner of Westminster Road in the days of the cattle arch before Westminster Bridge was built??
:open_mouth: To answer that, you’ll need to remember back to about 1962ish and their 6 and 8-leggers.

If I remember any others, I’ll post them up.

Here’s a 111 Scania (VEA 253 S) I drove for EJ Lucas:

George Mayers ended up running Mercs, and latterly Fodens in the fleet. I lived on the main road to Saltney until 1987, and the only Merc unit I recall was - CTM 60T, a 1626 daycab with pigeonbox sleeper. Every morning I would see an Atki borderer artic tipper, love to know what it carried as it was always stained with maroon dust/dirt, tyres, body, the lot. Also near the old Depot of Edge transport was brick firm
M+M Bricks. Again, every morning I heard the deafening racket of their Maggie artic climbing the hill on the main road, revving its ■■■■■■■■ off, ha ha. WHG 725R

Darlington’s at Eastham run a tidy fleet. I don’t know anything about their history though.

One company that seems to have a good look on, is the tipper business near the Castrol lube plant, they also do tacho calibrations.

wirralpete:
couldnt place OB transport until your picture chris, remember seeing them at octel. catchpoles as im sure you know was took over by catchpoles…now heres one for you. a small tanker firm based in eastham in the eighties, can i remember the name…nope… :frowning:

the tanker firm ineastham was b j r tankers then eastam comercials ran by ray bedows who died last year o b was taken over by caird enviromental

does any one rember jt pownall?? i think thats how he was spelt, frends dad and uncle used to work there, john and george jones,

darlingtons still operate, 6 8 wheelers running out of bridge water with paper sludge, and a fair few artics , now a scania volvo mixed fleet

Darlington’s moved from their yard in Heswall to Bromborough a few years back, they still run in black livery and pay as little as possible

Thanks the info of Geo Mayers, sounds as though his Atki tipper had been in Shotton Steel - I can remember seeing a few wagons around the place in that condition, maroon dust all over 'em!

Just browsing through Bubbleman’s Scrapbook Memories and see that Bulwark (Tankers) had a depot in the Port - anyone know where it was?

:bulb: Oxford Street, just off Station Road.
There’s a Shell petrol station on the site now, about 100 yds from the motorway, jct 9.

Most of the wagons that parked there had the Ancliffe(BLT) livery though.

In those days BLT meant ‘Bulk Liquid Transport’, whereas nowadays it would be ‘Bacon,Lettuce and Tomato’. :stuck_out_tongue:

Cheers Graham, I know where u mean - by Halfords at the bottom of the Port, is Nickerson’s yard still down there by the Boat Museum?

curnock:
edge transport from chester !,are they still going ?.they used to run a nice fleet

If its the same Edge Transport they are now at Llay Wrexham. They are a Palletline Depot so i see em every night at Trafford Park or Birmingham.

…They have built some Apartment blocks on that site - do you remember when Nickersons opened up a Saviem dealership there in the seventies ? …those “French motors with the funny column change gearlever”. :stuck_out_tongue:

Cheers again Graham, I don’t recall Nickerson’s Saviem involvement. Shame their yard has gone.

Do you recall Lobitos Oils? Were they based in the Port or was it L’pool? I remember seeing their tankers in the late 60’'s, although I can only remember the name, I don’t remember much else about them.

George Mayers yard was in Boundary Lane, Saltney, they only ever ran Atkinsons as far as I remember, on the steel out of Shotton. Turquoise cabs, red chassis.

When i started driving my first job was with George Mayers but Barry and Russ were in charge they had bit of a mixed fleet (of sheds) my very first artic D552DOW was a 265 rolls roadtrain but the bulk of the fleet were Foden’s with 1 Merc as i left they were just starting to buy MAN’s but they had changed the colours to blue with yellow sign writing.
Again as far as i know the yard was sold off to land developers!

B J R thats the one!, nice one eddie. deesider, mick carter is a hoyer driver trainer who took me out when i first started. he told me his dad ran a haulage compnay in the port for years wondering if this is the same carters you mentioned?.

nickerson is no longer there but i belive they have a depot round immingham/grimsby way?, still see their tankers running round that area.

who can remember van leer and their dodges fitted with sleeper cabs?. big percy being one of their drivers who sadly died in a accident on the M54. there was a whip round for him in the raven cafe at prees heath i remember. the banter i used to hear in there as a kid got me firmly hooked into a life on the road…

Didn’t your dad drive for Castrol Pete? I know they had a depot around E.Port but they had one at Hyde as well. They were always having dodgys on the Dog and Partridge pub on Woodhead, picked 'em up many a time in a morning.
