Driving @ 55 mph

Bloody hope I dont get stuck in front of any of you lot then. I drive my car at 50mph everywhere unless the speed limit is lower. Get filthy looks on dual carriage ways as they fly by (and then they avoid eye contact when we reach the next set of lights). Trucks tail gate me on single c/way when they should be doing 40.

If I wasn’t paying for fuel and wear and tear then I spose I would drive a bit faster if I was in a hurry, but my car is old and it does save money driving at 50 instead of 60 or 70

Cars speeding up when you try to overtake them is annoying, but I’ve found if you pull out early instead of getting right up their arse they let you past. If not then just pull back in. If they leave you stranded in the middle lane then ■■■■ em. Just stay in the middle lane till you catch up with a supermarket lorry and they will either drop back or undertake you at the last minute.

How much are you saving going 50 mph than what you would doing 60 or 70?

20 pence?

If you cant keep up with the flow of traffic in a car its a bit of hard lines. God help you if they up the limit to 80 on the motorway. lol

:unamused: hhmmmm all very strange indeed .

Why is it LGVs are on speed limiters I wonder :unamused:  Heavies trundling along at 52 - 55 - 56 mph and the driver sometimes wearing a hi-viz in the cab :sunglasses: Whats that all about then  :grimacing: Isnt the motorway speed limit for heavies 60mph still  or has someone changed the law ?

Why is it some drivers on here get bent out of shape because other drivers are wearing hi vis jackets. So what.I wear them, even when i am in my car going to or from work. And i have hi vis T shirts. It just saves having to keep remembering to put a vest on when on site or in the yard. When i am at work i am not worried about keeping up with the fashion. Probably the same drivers who get bent out of shape when other drivers are not sticking to 40mph.

one car drive i do fairly regulary is about 250 miles, all motorway. doing 70-80 it uses just under a full tank of fuel. doing 50-60 it uses less than half a tank. Extra time? Maybe 30min. No brainer

So for knocking off 20mph (28%) of you’re speed saves you 50% of you’re fuel? Doubtful. What car is it?

waddy640:
There are no minimum speed limits on motorways so that is the drivers choice.

Well said
I am fed up with hearing the comments on the Cb about people not doing the speed limit, it’s a max, not a min.

I thought there was a minimum and that’s what keeps tractors mopeds etc off them. Re; CB talk, I get fed up with a bloody eastern european bird who goes on and on so much that we’ve switched channels and can still hear her. If she’s married then I emplore her other half to stuff his ■■■■ in her gob and give us all some peace.Thank you.

No chance in a run of the mill modern car.

I’m guessing your driving a Evo or something with this talk?

The difference i get between 50 - 60 and 70 - 80 is 3 to 4mpg - There must be something seriously wrong with your wheels or you drive a thirsty motor

Those vehicles are specifically banned from the motorway, there are very few if any signs at motorway junctions to state what is banned just a sign directing prohobited traffic off the approach to the motorway.

The Dartford Crossing is the A282 as opposed to M25 to allow certain vehicles to cross the river but are banned from motorways.

From tests for a german auto magazine:
Golf 2.0Tdi 50mph > 52mpg, 70mph > 38mpg
Zafira 1.8 petrol 50mph > 37mpg, 70mph > 27mpg

TC

No idea for the Zafira but my mate has a Tdi Golf and it averages 55 mpg doing 70 - 90 on the motorway.

You can fail your driving test for not making proper progress, but i doubt 55mph would be classed as this.

Going to work in the car on an empty motorway i normally find myself cruising at 55 ish without thinking…
I dont do that much motorway driving, normally just hopping on and off for a few junctions but i stick to the limits always, mostly.

There are minimums, 30 mph on British M’ways, 40 mph on US interstates. I was reffering to the fact that some drivers think you should do the max allowed to prevent hold ups.
My truck has a radar system that finds ay vehicle in the same lane as mine and holds my speed to the same as theirs, if they accelerate so does my truck to a max of 66mph.
