Drink (Truck) Driving

I used to have one or two bottles of beer with my meal when overnighting, but no more than that. I don’t drink at all now on an overnight … not because I fear I’m breaking the law (I wasn’t), but because it made me have to get up during my sleep for a ■■■■.

On average the body processes one unit of alcohol every hour. Which means on an 11 hour overnight you can theoretically drink 10 units (a bottle of wine or 4 cans of stella) and be safe. I say theoretically because it differs from person to person. When I used to drink 2 bottles that was 5 units max and I could be sure it would all be out of my system regardless of my metabolism.

Now, down to the legal stuff. If you do have a drink in the cab or in a pub whilst on an 11 hour or 9 hour break, the police have to prove that you intended to drive whilst under the influence. Seeing as you are parked up on a daily break that is hard to prove as you would be breaking the law if you moved your vehicle during your daily break regardless of whether you had drank alcohol or not. If you are sitting drinking in the drivers seat with the keys in the ignition then it will be a bit harder to deny you were intending to drive than if you were sat in your bunk with the keys out.

Best bet is not to drink at all between shifts, but having a bottle or two on a night out is no different from having a bottle or two during the week at home.

( and going on 1 reaction I have just read, if you should see a woman being attacked, just look the other way, cos as a human being, you should avoid doing the right thing!!!)

The day that happened Mr V, I certainly would intervene, but the difference between your point and the event in question is that a crime WAS actually occuring, not a perception based on an obvious predjudice towards foreign drivers.

I know mate, but IF he had been drinking, then pulled out of the services and 30 mins later he had taken out a coach load of kids, would you of wished you’d of done some thing? This was always gonna be a hot potato. To be fair, the last driver I saw drinking was parked in a lay By on break

You keep creating these analogies, women getting attacked now wer’e on the old bus load of kids chestnut but even if we go on to mass murders the fact is that no law was broken on this occasion, he COULD have been intending to drive on and I COULD win the lottery

this week, but I aint gonna pack my job in on the strength of it.

Well that says it all. There’s me worrying about the children and all you can think about is ya millions!!!

You must be very proud.

No offences were committed

When was driving in europe always had a few glasses vino with my evening meal went down very wel or a couple of pints if on the overnight boat, theres nothing wrong with that what so ever its only when you start throwing it down your neck like its going out of fashion. the company I work for over here booze is banned in the truck full stop not even allowed to brinig some back from duty free.

As for the guy that phoned the old bill on that CZ driver get a life FFS. He could have been on a overnight stop he, maybe he had just finished his weekly rest or just cleaning his cab out. Unles you actually saw him have a drink and then set off (which you didnt) then keep your dam nose out of what other people are doing!!!

Maybe the guy runs at night? Unless you seen him drinking the cans & then driving out you can’t really be ringing the authorities. If that was the case then I would ring 999.

Well this has been an interesting read while thinking of finishing that last beer in my cab fridge, and after reading this load of rubbish I am now going to open it, no idea what you rang the police up for how do you know he isn’t still sat there, there really are some nosey self righteous drivers out there. BURP

Cant see any harm in having one or two in the cab.

Saw two french trucks pull up next to me at camb services the other day for what i assume was lunch, they both sat in the one truck making some grub and sat on the dash was a bottle of wine, made me chuckle actually.

Should of made a citizens arrest

There is a world of difference between enjoying a drink with a meal and getting p…ed .I would have just minded my own business in the O.Ps situation.

Yorkysays:-:
He then went into the services. I was curious, so I went over to put some rubbish in the same bin. It was 4 cans of 3.5% lager he’d put in this bin.

If I put some rubbish in a bin and there are some cans of beer in there then I wouldn’t normally notice what the ABV was. I imagine you had a rummage in the bin and picked up another man’s waste to examine it?

Yorkysays:-:
I thought, if he gets back in and drives off within the next 20 mins I’ll call the Plods. After 25 mins he hadn’t returned

But you phoned the Plods anyway? Because you saw somebody putting litter in a litter bin? What if I was making a sandwich and you saw me with a knife? Would you get on the phone and tell the Police that I might be about to stab somebody?

Mate, you need to have a long hard look at yourself. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Iv’e not touched any alcohol since christmas, just not fancied it tbh but in the summer i may have one or two bottles of crabbies when nighting out, i do know of a truck driver that opens his first can while still driving!!! He’s been banned twice :unamused:

Three years ago on my drive home i caught up with a car that was just missing hitting parked cars,at first i thought he was on the phone but when he turned onto my street he took the turn very wide when everyone seems to cut it including me. He pulled up 7 houses away from mine and i carried on home and told the wife i thought id followed a drink driver home and was gona walk back to have a word with him.

I went back and he had just got out of the car and was rolling round the front bumper, said id followed him round the street and asked how much he’d had but he said he painted cars for a living and that’s why he was sluring lol. I gave him my phone and asked him to ring the law on himself but he didn’t have the bottle to do it so i did. It was the first time id seen a grown man cry.

For two years we saw him walking to the bus stop and would even say hello when he walked past my house, he doesn’t even realize it was me that reported him, Don’t drink and drive kids. he did lose plenty of weight as an added bonus.
