Do you have to use the hard shoulder?

So the signs tell you to use the hard shoulder ,but is it optional because one could argue that you arent keeping to the left, but I know drivers who refuse because it’s dangerous, what do you think?

I think you’re another driver who needs to learn how to drive.

On a smart motorway when the hard shoulder is a running lane it becomes lane 1. Everyone who continues to sit in what was lane 1 are doing the equivalent of sitting in the middle lane. And no it’s not dangerous. If you think it’s dangerous to use it you should send your licence back to DVLA.

However don’t change what you do my clueless friend because it’s muppets like you that leave me a lane that’s nice and empty that I can tank down at the speed limit undertaking all the idiots sat there crawling along in the other lanes with nothing in front of me for miles to slow me down.

To be fair previous ( more sensible ) generations decided that motorways should have a hard shoulder for emergency use only for a reason.Just like lane 3 was good for 100 mph +.It’s obvious who the muppets are and it certainly wasn’t them. :unamused:

Its ok untill hard shoulder then becomes a slip road off. Then you have to battle to get back into lane 1.
As my limiter is set at 58mph I just stay in lane 3 (old lane 2) and overtake the whole lot of you plobbers lol

Speaking of using the hard shoulder, there seems to be an increased habit of drivers using the hard shoulder (including ordinary motorway hard shoulders) to queue on slip roads when it is busy, maybe this is a knock on effect of these smart motorways and drivers believe they are doing the right thing, what would you do if coming off at a junction and faced with a queue like this? Me, I am continuing in lane 1 onto the slip road and jumping the illegal queue.

i think you need to learn the highway code and not worry about others

So you move the stationary queue to lane 1.Do you want to be the one sat at the rear end of it in a car.The hard shoulder is there for stationary traffic owing to emergencies on a motorway.
Which just leaves the question does an unfit for purpose motorway junction fit the definition of an emergency.
Or just go on until you reach a useable junction then find a non motorway route back to your destination.
The latter is my choice I definitely ain’t queueing on a motorway to exit it either way.
It’s clear that many motorway junctions need to be upgraded to triple deck clover leaf design.
So that traffic exiting a motorway, turning right from opposite directions, doesn’t conflict with each other thereby grid locking the junction. While merging left turning traffic later well forward after the junction.

and I’ll be out in lane 3 or 4 (depending on how you count them )- if necessary.Any lane will do when needs must especially on a Flat out Friday .Remember folks - BOATS DONT WAIT :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

Why do you have to insult me?
I passed all my driving tests ,motorbike,PC,all first time, and advanced driving so I dont need to lean to drive again,I dont know why I bother

Utter rubbish. Put indicator on well in advance of the junction you’ve had at least 1 mile warning of, wait for gap to occur, pull in.

If you’re a professional driver and/or you did an advanced driving course you should know the answer. This is noddy stuff that anyone with even just a car licence should know as they’re taught it when learning to drive even if they live nowhere near a motorway. So given you needed to ask the question then clearly you need to go learn how to drive again.

When I used to drive to Germany regularly in the 80s/90s I noticed their drivers would automatically drop onto a hard shoulder (if there was one) when the queue was filling a slip road.I figured it was in their highway code. They also tended to filter 2 lanes into one, zipper style, unlike us Brits.

Because he’s obviously a grade A ■■■■ pal.

Found this…

In t’interweb land. It’s rules for autobhans

During heavily congested traffic, drivers in the right and left lanes are required to move as far as possible to their designated side, creating an open channel through the middle of the expressway in case emergency vehicles need to pass through.

Hmm I always wondered what makes someone be an advanced driver ,could it be they think they’re better than the rest of us ?

Play it like an arcade game.

Take any lane…bonus points,for a miss.

I dont think I’m better than anyone else,I wouldnt have mentioned it only because I’m told I need to start learning to drive again.
I did the advanced test because I was training to be a driving instructor, so you have to do it for that. Its not that difficult, you are only allowed 6 minor points, and you need to make good progress

You’re just digging a deeper hole mate, aint you…all those supposed driving ‘qualifications’ and you need to ask a question like that?
I ain’t got an advanced certificate, and neither would I want (nor feel the need) to get one tbh, but one of the FIRST things I was ever told whilst learning to drive was …
‘Keep left at all times except for overtaking and when the signs tell you different’
Page 1 stuff.

They spend millions designing and converting smart M.ways,.and whether you or anybody else agrees with them does not matter a ■■■■, but clowns who refuse to use them properly for some self righteous and misguided reason, are just turning them back into standard m.ways essentially .:bulb:

The Smart Motorway idea is a con.

They always knew trucks would need somewhere to park in the Brexit queue & please give the government credit where it is due: they have managed to convert 100s of miles to be ready.

The fact that they are not in the areas they are needed should not surprise anyone even Mail, Sun or Express readers
