Hello all i saw somewhere in this thread a picture of chris morris black foden 8 legger, chris is still going running 9 trucks under the name SOUTH MOLTON TRANSPORT LTD heres a pic of my drag he runs an ex maddox truck had a white merc actros drag before this one an ex bawdens outfit.
A fantastic looking piece of kit this! Presumably it copes with the lanes & the banks okay - what size lump does she have in there?
Another school-boy question, how do you go about tipping the wagon with one of these - un-hitch the trailer our can it be jack-knifed?
I see from the Volvo picture thread that you used to drive for George Bedford, has he finished altogether now? I heard he kept one lorryback & was driving it himself? My dad (RGS Stone, Fenny Bridges) used to do a fair bit for George back in the early 80s.
All the best, Andrew Stone.
She has a 420 in her and is very good around the lanes not that much cut in with the trl, if i got the room it can be jack knifed around and tipped over the drawbar have only been in a couple of spots where i have had to drop the trl,
George has stopped now sold his last truck last year, cheers ian
Thanks for that! Is the lime just tipped these days, or is anybody still using the ramps? Dad used to run a lime spreader, all of ours was ramped as the Beer Lime (chalk) would soak up moisture like a sponge!
Coincidentally I work in Stafford (not driving) so we see a fair bit of Ed Wheetmans, Stan Robinson, Bassetts, Nicholls etc.
All the lime i do is just tipped on the farm or we do a lot of field tips they just load it with there own loader now…there are photos of my ed weetman mega space on a staffordshire companies thread on here somewhere. its still about its the merc megaspace with 4 spotlights on the roof a bloke called martin took it over from me.

comers still use ramps for loading lime, they run a couple of well cared for old erf’s and they were still using an old massey ferguson 168 for spreading

Hi,good pics Jamie…the Stoford pics were taken from my vantage spot by the M4 near Bristol, the Radfords stuff brings back memories of the late 70s when we were on AM (illegal) CB…Revajet, his various steeds are included here was always on the airwaves,he had one of the broadest devon accents going but could take the wee-wee out of everyone.
Heres a few from the best fleet in Devon, sadly missed
The EC E.R.F was taken the day before the auction,on its final trip for Brian…anyone know the reg number of the Foden?
Is Brian Harris still trading■■?
The reason for asking on a recent trip to the west country I saw two 4 X 4 pick ups one towing a 3 axle trailer
both with Brian Harris written on the doors with a Bovey Tracy phone number
Cheers Bubbs.
I’ll ask Brian about the Foden reg at the weekend
Nice to see B71WDV AGAIN my old motor

Whatever happened to ‘Torbay Freight Services’ ?
Are they still going?
Always looked smart and they had a D reg Scania 112 six wheeler that would give anything a good run for its money.
saw this in Exeter mkt a couple of weeks ago
sorry about the pic quality - only had my phone !!
Thanks for that Denis, nice to see it’s still around.
It’s a D-reg IIRC so is exempt a speed limiter.
In the mid 90’s i was driving an ERF plated at 28t,which had a 14L,325 ■■■■■■■ and Twin Splitter box and also no limiter.
Late evenings, coming home the A30 through Devon,i didn’t hang about but when i saw that 6 wheeler in my mirror,i knew it would only be a matter of time before i was looking at its back doors.
It was always well loaded too, curtains bulging and swaying from side to side.

Are Torbay Freight still going?
I thought it was D reg too
I don’t know much about them except that Bampton Cattle Transport had a second hand cab from them when a tree fell one of theirs and left the Torbay freight sign writing on.
I haven’t seen them around for a while and google suggests they were dissolved in 2008

Anyone remember the name of the meat transport firm from North Devon (it wasn’t North Devon Meat) that used to run AEC Mammoth Major eight-legger fridge vans back in the 1960s? They used to come down through Wiveliscombe on the old A361 like the clappers, and that wasn’t easy before the ring road.

Excellent pic’s…Bring back some great memories, especially the Parson’s photo…used to spend all my school holidays and every Saturday out with my Dad when he drove for them…
Shame there isn’t more Parson’s pics…don’t see them very often since I moved away from Devon.
Whittons(Green & Cream)Ltd to give them their full title, were based in Station Road,Cullompton Devon. the yard was there until Tesco built a supermarket on it!!
Bloody Tesco’s hey!
That last pic of Whittons Albion was taken at Tiverton Coach Builders yard,on Blundells road in Tiverton. The same yard later became a lorry park up,where I spent much of my time as a young fella taking photos of trucks. If you look at some of my earlier post you’ll see the same building behind. As for Tesco’s they built one on this site too. There is no longer a lorry park in Tiverton to my knowledge.
Sorry to go off thread here a bit,but Devon and all that, anyone know of Nick Whale aka " Rodders" (looked more like Rod Stewart than Rod Stewart did himself ) he comes from Honiton area I think, not seen or heard of him for yrs and yrs.

Good evening John,
I’ve just spoken to my Uncle regarding Nick Whale of ‘Heards of Honiton’ as he knew him fairly well from the livestock haulage. Apparently the last he knew Nick was in Guernsey in the building trade, but that was a few years ago.
Incidentally you may remember my Uncle - Martin Stone, he drove for Stuarts transport for several years. I have put up quite a few of his photos from back then on the followin thread viewtopic.php?f=35&t=51613
Thanks Andrew, Rodders a builder? the mind boggles He was a good bloke, still is I expect, I not seen him for years, when I first met him, it was ages before I knew his name was Nick as he was knwn as Rodders by everyone and always had been.
Nice looking through the link you posted, seeing Harold Williams trucks, in Gloucester market too.
I did a bit for Graham Gilder, and one of the last jobs I did for him was to go to Gloucester market and cut the sales rings out and the scales too
I cant say i remember you Martin, but do recognise the 88 and the name, seen your trucks about.
