G’day fellas.
good info and pics again, good on ya. Interesting what you say Tea bag about the Torridge Maggie,I thought it must have belonged to Colin Wensley as it was painted in his colours for a while soon after he put his first DAF 3600 on the road. I also remember being able to see old sign writing under the Torridge writing, but couldn’t work out what is said,so after all these years you’ve solved a mystery that I’d long ago forgoton all about,ta mate. Does anyone have any pics of it in Langdons colours?
A brand spanker, taken just after being fitted with a new body outside Tiverton Body Builders,87/88
This is the same motor that I posted on page one, taken in the Stoford yard in 87.
Another of Luxton & Coombes, taken in Tiverton 1990,not sure how big the Gardener would have been? Over to you straight Eight mate?
Cheers Jamie
Nice pics once again lads . That’l be a 6LXCT 230 hiding under that cab i reckon Jamie, Gardner’s first production Turbo lump.
Regards, Chris
Hello ,here are a few more.
Cheers Bubbs.
Anyone know if Ricky Lee is still going? He was always a decent man to have a brew with.
G’day again fellas,
cheers for the info Staight eight,I never realy worked on many Gardeners mate, most Gardener powerd trucks were being fazed out by the time I was doing my aprenticeship. I’ve a photo of an ERF E16,which is not an model that I recal seeing many of,if any. Does the E16 have a staight eight Gardener? i’ll stick it up on another post. It’s good to see the pic of the Witheridge Garage ERF it must have been the relacement fot this ripper of a B series
Taken early one moring before school in 1990 in Tiverton.
Found another Torridge taken again in Tiverton in Jan 1994
The firm that I did my time as a fitter with used to look after ECC’s trucks from Burlescombe quarry[turn off at Martin Haymans yard on the A38 nr junction 27]. This old girl was one of them, she had a Gardener and man did it smoke in the morning, not too quick off the mark either, not sure how big the donk was,Staight Eight mate?
Taken in Tiverton, building the bypass in sep 1994.
Cheers Jamie
Great pics Jamie, the Torridge Sed Atk is a good’un a few more from me.
Hope these are ok.
Cheers Bubbs.
Hi Jamie the ECC trucks were from Westleigh Quarry not Burlescome, although alot of them were parked at Hillhead Quarry were they did have there own truck garage.I take it you use to work for Gary Pooke if you use to repair the ECC trucks. It was an odd situation with there trucks because some belonged to ECC Quarries and some belonged to Heavy Transport which in turn belonged to ECC.
G’day,
Nice chinese six Bubbs,I like the road train plate,it’d be good to see it hooked up to three trailers. Big Bear mate, yep it was Westleigh quarry and yes I did work for Gary Pook,do you know him mate? A good bloke Gary who I have a lot of respect for,but a hard man at times,I must say that the standard of work that used to come out of the workshop, engine shop and engineering shop was top class mate,if you did a job you did it well. I did my time with him and worked for him for four years. He ended up owning the tippers from ECC Westleigh, which became Camas Agregates,he called the haulage side SMW Haulage LTD,which are the initials of his three kids,Sarah,Mathew and William. Is Gary still running tippers mate?
This one was taken up at Westleigh in Sep 1993 it was moved on not long after. It was the only artic that they ran.
Another from Westleigh that Gary Pook had,you can see the SMW Haulage sticker. I spent a lot of my apprenticeship working on these there were five of them. This was taken in Tiverton Sep 1998.
And finaly another Torridge Sed Atki, pretty sure we haven’t seen this one on here yet, taken in Tiv 1989.
Cheers have a good weekend,if you going to Gayden have a good 'un lucky buggers. Jamie
a load more gregorys
Hi Jamie yes I know Gary Pook I sold him one of my lorries last year when I went back to one. I know some of his drivers too Reg Saunders etc…
G’day,
Good one Big Bear mate, say hello to Gary for me if you see him. The ERF artic was Reg Saunders’ motor, you can just see him stood by the side of the cab,he always had a photo of his mrs in the cab,you can see it hanging up in the middle top of the windscreen. He’s a good bugger Reg.
Cheers Jamie
G’day,
Good Gregory pics again Jamie10,they just keep coming mate!
I found another Luxton & Coombes motor, this was the only FL that they ran,I think it ran solely for Whitbreads, hense being brown and used to cart beer into the bottling plant in Tiverton.
Taken in their yard 1990.
I think Moyse ran out of Edworthys yard in Bow,I don’t know much about them realy. This must have been an quite an early Gobstopper being ‘Y’ reg. What year did they come out 81,82? Taken at Truckfest South West 1991.
Pretty sure this was another of Moyse’s,taken in Bow july 1991.
And finaly another pic of DWN after it had a birthday, taken in Tiverton Feb 1991.
Cheers Jamie

That is(was) Bonzo Moyse’s truck - he used to go in for the vintage tractor ploughing several years ago

Does any one remember W L Vllance from Bovey Tracey, I was placed with them after leaving the Army in 1978 and ended up on the there skip fleet at the age of 23, we had these old Sedon `s but without limiters they flew.
Then six months later I ended up working for Sabey`s waiste in Piagnton on the old Brixham road, eventualy they closed down the depot and moved to london in 1980, hence I have been here ever since.
G’day
It’s been a while.I been busy with work and other stuff. Met a good bloke yesterday who has done up an old LAD 6X4 Hippo tractor unit and a 6x2 Ergo Beaver, with a LAD Octopus on the go.nice bits of gear, but as their in NZ and not Devon I can’t show you the pics, sorry.
I thought we’d pay homage to the trusty TK today, you got to love 'em. Most older fellas on here must have driven or worked on one at some time. There are still heaps working here in NZ and over the ditch in OZ.
Goodlands had a few branches in Devon and Somerset, not sure what happened to them but it all changed hands in the early 90’s. They had a few of these TK’s this one must have been one of the last being Y reg. Good bit of hand ball with those sacks of coal, nice to see them neatly stacked up. Taken in Tiverton 1987.
This used to park up in Tiverton every night,I’m picking Colas were from Devon somewhere as this 'aint a long distance moter realy. Pic from 1990.
Seen at a show in Tiverton July 1994,also a late model on an X plate. Nice signage.
Hope fully Bubbs will have some Beddies to add? Cheers Jamie
The Bedford TK cattle truck is still alive and well, I saw it in Exeter Cattle Market about 3 weeks ago.
For the member who asked about W L Vallance, well they are very much alive and well, mainly distribution work, a few artics on distance and tippers on contract to Bardon.

My first truck was a TK860 before I got my licence, doing scrap metal and all other sorts of jobs. Not exactly a motorway truck as it wasn’t geared for more than 55 mph, but reliable as all getout. And the distinctive brake sound was one of my earliest memories as my dad had quite a few over the years.
The main trouble was that you had to lean your head forward to see through the windscreen so your neck got stiff. And there was no real place to put a radio. It got me some really good experience and I learned how to tie all manner of loads down at a good early age.
I took someone elses TK to Nottingham once, from Cornwall, and had to put pieces of tissue in my ears to stop my head from exploding. It was that noisy I didn’t hear my mobile ring…
