Holmans Exeter

This is a photo of the lorry driven by my father—in–law Ron James in the 1970’s. Ron drove for Holman’s Exeter but he was always “The Cornishman” being a Redruth Man, and in later years when he had, his own lorry still maintained “The Cornishman” Hubby tells me the photo was taken up top Lanner Hill by Phil William’s I am also posting some photos in the Cornish Companies thread of my father’s lorries

The sed atk belonging to torridge was driven by a guy called geoff colwill ( seagull ) . He drove the vehicle from new and was the only driver to ever drive that vehicle whilst it belonged to torridge .

Great thread by the way . Didnt even realise it was on here ( despite someone telling me weeks ago , but as usual i ignored him ) .
The red 140 scania that people presumed to be irish did in fact belong to Bill mahoney of Bideford . He is still going with an old daf super space , his son mathew also now operates a couple of trucks under the name uk heavy haulage .
Has anyone got any pics of shapland and petters erf’s . They had a fleet of half a dozen during the 70’s and 80’s .
I would also love to see any pics of lameys if anyone has any and also tolley and smales ! Oh and what about r &g what a terrific fleet they had .

I’ve been hoping to see some Lameys photos to Turnip, think they were before NZ Jamie’s time, and even Bubbleman doesn’t seem to have any, but we can always hope. Have heard of Tolley and Smale but what trucks did they run?

R&G were mainly Volvo users and only had Scania’s towards the end of the Company, in fact I think the last lorry they bought was a 6x4 Foden for timber haulage.

Hello, havent put anything on here for a while but here are a few pics of R and G,Lameys and one of Tolley and Smales. They aint much good I know ,I have more pics from all these firms but they were given to me for my eyes only and therefore I’m gonna respect the owners wishes. These I reckon will be ok.

I know theyre poor quality but its better than nothing,ok

Cheers Bubbs.

Thanks Bubbleman, your efforts are much appreciated, you must have some collection. Anyone know more about Tolley and Smale like where their yard was, how big a fleet and when they stopped trading etc, cause i recognize the name but nothing else.

Tolley and smale were based at the top of moreton park road in bideford , opposite the delanco factory . The site became normans cash and carry, is now houses . I dont know how many they ran exactly , and they would have stopped trading in the 70’s sometime .

Fantastic site, really enjoying this thread in particular!

Here are a few pictures of my father’s lorries: RGS Stone, Fenny Bridges, Honiton. Roughly in chronological order, apologies for the quaility! :unamused:

His first lorry TK - 453TDV, loading grit at Honiton District Council Depot (Express Dairies Honiton in the background). Second with similar TK of Anniss Transport East Budliegh.

Two of the three AEC Marshall TGM6s, both M-Reg’s, waiting to load grain off-farm somewhere.

Our only Volvo! F86 8 wheel dropside in the yard at home.

Hope you like them, more to follow.

Andrew

going off at a tangent to these excellent archive photos…what used to be in those French MESGUEN trailers that came in at Millbay docks & who is this firm Armorica?

Talking of old tipper firms anyone remember George Dandridge (Green fleet with yellow sign-writing) & Burgoynes (grey fleet with red/black sign-writing) from Kingsbridge in the '60s & early '70s, used to shift sand, chippings & corn off local farms

G’day
good to see the thread up and running again. I found these pics in a magazine.

I’m sure I have some R&G pics somewhere,I’ll have a dig around.
Cheers Jamie

Evening All,

Here are a few more from Fenny Bridges:

Our last TK, a 7.5 tonner, on the Lymington to Yarmouth ferry after delivering Bark / Wood Peelings to a Hospital in Newport.

Clydesdale & Commando.

E-Plate Renault / Dodge G100.

Constructor Sixes.

The last Constructor tipping Lime.

Hope you like them.

Andrew

Here’s one for the North Devon contingent:

Two North Devon Meat AEC Marshalls on Westminster Bridge, presumably on the way to / from Smithfield Market. How long for that round-trip?

This is an AEC works promotional shot bought at Gaydon in 2006. Stamped on the back ‘AEC Vehicles Ltd, Southall, Middlesex’ with the negative number.

Andrew

Nice pictures Pebbles, especially the North Devon Meat’s AEC’s, they were a early Mercedes user, does anyone have any photos of them?

Mesguen started coming over here in 1973, with the opening of Brittany Ferries Plymouth-Roscoff service, carrying vegetables, working with Ashburton firm W F Miners & Sons Ltd. W F M are now long gone, but Mesguen are now a substantial firm.

Amoric Freight started as a freight forwarder by Marc Payne, working for David Baverstock in about 1975. The company has risen to the position it is now in, as a result of the hard work and determination of Marc, who now owns the company outright. He has to be the only person I have ever seen, talking to 2 telephones at once in different languages, whilst talking to someone else in a 3rd.

Regarding Burgoynes, just 2 weeks ago I saw a Commer TS3 restored in their livery at a rally.

Peter

Many thanks for the info, Peter

You forget to say that Marc is one of the most decent people you could wish to meet and is incredibly smart and business savvy. Did you ever work for him when he was part of Star?

I do not personally remember N.D.M. with Mercedes vehicles. Are you not getting mixed up with Taunton Meat Haulage from Bathpool who were part of Weston Super mare Motors, the Mercedes Distributor? Please correct me if I am wrong.
