NZ JAMIE:
G’day,
Big Bear did they finish up compleatly? I know they got bought out about two years ago,a farmer from Cornwall bought the firm. How long ago did they finish up mate?
Cheers Jamie

Hi Jamie I think L & C must have finished last year, went Bankrupt as far as I know. From what i heard it was over night it started when the drivers couldn’t get diesel anywhere then they were all told to bring the lorries back to the yard. There was a sale so you still see some of the lorries running around in there colours.

bubbleman:

Hope these are ok

Cheers Marc.

Thanks Marc

I went to look at that Williams container of Goodings’ when they were selling it (probably 6 years ago now)

ps surprised nobody’s mentioned M Way yet

Great to see the pics of the livestock wagons. Any more of operators in the south west??

Thanks

Sam

Hi All & Bubbs
The Bowdens Merc brought back memories as they had one based in Eastleigh at the drivers house he used to go to Llanwern steel works every night delivering Rubber some where on the way possible Membury.
The steel was then delivered around Hampshire & Dorset the next day, I thinck Cashmoores took the contract on.

Hi again,Denis F,I put a couple of Ways on page 3 mate, must admit if you blink you’ll miss 'em.A few more then.

Cheers Bubbs.

bubbleman:

what happened to this firm?

Great pics chaps,

Saw the photo of the AR Newport, Guy and wondered whether Newport’s are still on the go and if so what do they operate now?

Seem to remember they were in Comical Motor a while back and they ran a “mature fleet”

Cheers
Mark

G’day,
Nice 140 Bubbs,ta mate and the Smythe 141,I didn’t know they had one of them. The 140 must have been Irish and from 1973. Those early ‘0’ and ‘1’ seriers Scania’s would have to be my favourite truck, great styling an apsolute classic. I found a couple more Exonia pics a nice early Fiat, they looked the part with the spyder hubs.

A couple more early Luxton & coombes.

For me trucks don’t get any better than this, she had all the gears, roof rack, ladder and the classic hatcher sun visor. They bought this one second hand,I’d love to know it’s history, funny thing was she was’nt the big banger V8,but a 111. I took this very early one morning in 1990 before school.

Later in 1990 she had a birthday,as did quite a few of the fleet. she might have looked like she’d get up and boogie, but not so I remember one driver telling me he was in the low box going up Holden Hill by the time he’d reached the petrol station at the bottom,he also said the heater had packed up too,not a happy camper.
Check out the other motors behind.
Cheers Jamie

just a thought - has anyone got any pics of John Watt’s Livestock trucks ( J Watts & Sons)

Were any of them dark green Renaults ? Seems to ring a bell
Steve

a lot were green Renaults - slightly darker shade than Evan’s

Looking at those pics that not who i was thinking about - these were a lot darker green - i remember a G290 replaced by an R range - i can see the driver in my minds eye but not the name on the truck :frowning:
Steve

G’day,
Good to see so many of Evans’ mate,I used to see them around heaps, but I don’t think I have one pic of their motors.
Another Luxton & Coombes Scania, the sister to the one that you posted Bubbs.

One of Lloyd Maunder’s many fridge motors that they ran from their meat works in Willand, they still had the same four animal logo that was on the AEC Mandator of R Radford that you posted earlier Bubbs. Taken in Willand in Aug 1992.

F H Baker ran from a yard next to R Radford in Cullompton, all fridge vans I think, this was also taken in Willand,May 1991.
Cheers Jamie

Gooding’s and Pengelly’s also ran dark green Renaults on livestock (Bubbleman has pics further up this thread) Maybe that’s who you were thinking of ?

Renaults were popular because Devon/Somerset County Commercials were agents for Renault and Houghton Parkhouse livestock containers

The Kings ‘Chinese six’ and drag reminded me of a similar type and colour vehicle,DAF i think, that was run by Reddaways near Okehampton i think.
Used to stand when i saw it because the lorry would have a flat body and the trailor,a box/curtainsider.A bit unusual.

There was a cattle haulier called Partridges who used to be around Exeter & Newton Abbot markets years ago, I think they had dark green trucks

Hello again, one of the big boys now but pics when they were a little bit smaller.

The last M.A.N and the Scania are both ex A.D.Smythe.

Cheers Bubbs.

Partridges were from Morchard Bishop near Crediton and ran an all Volvo fleet. Jamie has already posted a
picture of there Volvo F16 (one of the first in the country) on here.
I don,t think they do cattle anymore, but they do run a plain white volvo fh pulling a tipper on animal guts.

think there’s two fh’s

the other green renaults miight have been Boards

there’s part of one of theirs in this pic of Bubblemans

Boards sold their livestock trucks seveal years ago - a farmer near here bought one ( 10-11 tonner iirc) the one in the pic was bought by a local butcher - he ran it for a couple of years then put the container on a new Renault , but has since sold it to a livestock haulier from somewhere near Glastonbury.
