Here’s a pic of Bassett’s ex-W/D (RAF) Foden DG6 - ‘Hercules’ dating from 1940 and heavily modifed in Bassett’s workshop at Tittensor, I took this piccy a few years ago at Tern Valley Ralley, near Eccleshall showing Hercules in retirement and in the ownership of a preservationist after a long career with Bassett’s, including many call outs by the Police for assistance on the M6 and throughtout the Midlands area.
Hercules originally wore Bassett’s two tone blue livery and had a 4 piece windsceen before a rebuild in the early 70’s when the yellow livery was applied and lower postioned twin head lights were fitted. Hercules has carried various reg’s (no doubt including Reg Bassett himself! ), originally trade plate 826 E and later 444 RF, after regulations regarding the use of trade plates were changed in 1986, Hercules carried Q832 QVT and later as seen above the ‘age related’ plate GSJ 426 is carried, which was one of the previously unused Bute County Council (Scottish) numbers allocated by the DVLA as a 'age related mark.
Here’s the young and more handsome looking Hercules:-

It was run by Gordon Stead for many years, its regular run being Buxton empty to Middlewich, load salt for Birds eye at Grimsby and back to Buxton empty. Gordon only moved on, to a C Series ERF, when the legislation banning foodstuffs from being carried on flats was introduced. Sadly Gordon is no longer with us, nor I believe are Birds Eye at Grimsby.
