When Billy Bowman,s band frae Cockermuth was playing at village hall dances doon below Whitehaven Billy used to sing what he called the Seascale version of “I do like to be beside the seaside” — "Oh ! I don,t like to be be beside the seaside, I don’t like to be beside the sea, I would rather walk in the park and glow in the dark, oh ! I don,t like to be beside the sea, tiddly om pom pom, tiddly om pom pom "

Definitely Trev H. Always held there

I always preferred it when the show was in Kendal CG but as Dennis has previously said it spoiled the ground and got too big for the space they had.

Hello truckfing

Thanks for that marra. Never realised it had been held in Kendal before.

Kindest regards

It moved in 1986 CG after being in Kendal since 1973. The oldest programme I can find is 1981 and the 1986 was from the first year at Flookburgh. The map is from the Kendal show and it is clear how they were limited with a road at each end. I still preferred it though.

Hello truckfing

Excellent photo marra. Many thanks for that plus the information

Off the rally subject, have you any photos of Cragg and Curtiss (or ■■■■■■■ Cold Storage as they like to be known now)?

Heres one for ■■■■■■■■ Gill. This photograph couldnt be included in the Timber Hauliers thread because its unlikely
that this Scania 112 will now be seen grafting in the forests.

The snow in the background would make ideal scenery for a Christmas Card ,…only this
photo was taken 3 months later ,- at Easter Weekend this year.

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Saw that parked at Clifton a couple of weeks ago. Very tidy!

Hello CWM

Many thanks for that one marra.

Nice photo. I take it that this photo was taken on the Kirkby Stephen rally was it?

Think you need to start a Truck Christmas Card company. I’d buy them!!

That’s exactly how I feel though I do have a look at Flookburgh every three or four years.

Hi truckfing and erfguy,
I agree with you about the atmosphere is different at Flookburgh compared to the old Showground at Kendal.
The younger generation ( ■■■■■■■■ Gill, etc…) cant imagine the original Showgrounds sentiments.

Probably we ( older ones :unamused:  ) are all thinking on the same lines;- :arrow_right:

  1. The main A 6 Trunk Road passed along the western edge of the original Showground.

  2. There were more of the former old school drivers who remembered driving through Kendal , - and over Shap Fell.

  3. The Public Address commentator made frequent references to the importance of the A 6 prior to the opening of the M 6
in October 1970. That rekindled many memories.

  4. Youll no doubt remember the Birtwistle-owned Leyland ( Cub ? ) that was proudly paraded around the Ring`each year ?
It was once owned by Charles Alexander & Partners , and would have travelled along the aforementioned A 6 .

Nostalga , eh ? It ain`t what it used to be .

I`ll retire to my Rocking Chair now…

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Interesting post Roy about The Steam Gathering when it was held on the old Showground in Kendal and I can well understand why it was a far better venue than Flookburgh. However, don’t get me wrong I’m not going to “knock” the use of the Showground for running steam rollers, traction engines and other heavy bits of gear around the circuit that was initially built for harness racing.Horses and “hard grund” do not go to-gether as you will know,I re-call running my wifes great filly Flair in her first ever qualifying race as a 2 year old at Kendal one Saturday in '83.By the Monday morning the horse was as lame as a dog on her near fore and had a weakness in that tendon for the rest of her career.I vowed then I’d never run another horse at Kendal, and I didn’t,much to the anoyance of G M S and the Stewart Bros. But they wouldn’t accept that it was far too hard a surface to race horses after it had been rolled by Steamers !! just for a laugh I did enter another of my horses,Dalechief,in The Lakeland pacing Derby of 1990 although I had no intention of running him it was just to “wind them up”,I got a right “snotty” letter off Anne Hunter the secretary fining me £30 for not producing a vets certicate (they are still whistling for the £30) But anyway,IMO,the racing at Kendal was always inferior compared to that at York or Towyn so I missed nowt,I used to go to the racing at Kendal as spectator now and again just for a laugh, the bulk of the spectators were farmers who were more interested in having a crack about the prices at the marts in the area and could’nt give “a monkeys” about the racing! Cheers Dennis.

I recall a a commercial vehicle salesman of well known Sandbach products doing a runner with the takings of the Kendal Steam Gathering about 1976 or so.
Did they ever catch him ■■?
