One of Bewicks finest! it spent many years hauling in and out of the paper mill after it’s aquistion from H. Barker Lindale.

hiya,
Great motor for their era, done some happy miles in one of them, nice warm comfy cab, and if the engine was right they would tootle on a bit and very stable you never saw many of these lying on their side, and I bet Dennis used to lock himself in the passenger seat shut his eyes and imagine sitting across the cab from Possy who would be giving a bigger version but same cab, big licks down the M6, just a break from the rat race you understand, dream on Dennis you’re turn for the teas.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi lads, another good thread is this, as i remember a lot of these old firms from trammin up and down the M6 and M74 to and from scotland, also used to deliver to clarkes askham and kendal a lot. Remember a firm called Carters of Lindale, smart green Dafs. IIRC you could just see their yard on the old Lindale road as you went round the island before you went up Lindale hill on the 590.
If there is any pics of Carters on any of the earlier pages, my appologies as i’ve been through most of them but not all… excellent…

think you mean shaws of lindale green dafs

Hello geogeking,

Thanks again

One of Bewicks finest! it spent many years hauling in and out of the paper mill for Bewick Transport Services Limited, after it’s aquistion from H. Barker Lindale after many years of active serice in their fleet hauling timber and paper all over the country.

Now then “george” I trust you are not suggesting that Bewick Transport would have even contemplated operating a “Veehical” on the Queens Highway that had been previously operated “on the road” by the “Addams Family” from Lindale!!! I purchased this Leyland Badger (for handy money) to be used as an "off road shunter"for use on the Paper Mill premises at Beetham, and for this purpose only it was fully insured! The benefits it offered were mainly the fact that it had been fitted with a new cab a year or two previously and it was a “smoke free” Leyland engine which didn’t trigger the fire sprinklers in the mill when running cold!! Cheers Dennis.

Cheers Dave.

Shot of the old yard in Milnthorpe, spot the mistake? A Bubble thats blocked in by decent motors!! IIRC it was an F86 I had through my hands in a “deal” but had no intention of running and it passed through like a big turd!! ugh! Cheers Dennis.

That wouldn’t be a Gardner 240 Guy that you’ve forgotten about in your “formative” years would it Dennis??

Now come on Iain, you don’t really expect me to “go there” do you? All I would achieve is a major disruption in the “TNUK nursing home” If I suggested that Bewick Transport had not one but two!! 8LXB Big J’s!!! PAW480M and OHA 301M !!! Nurse nurse!! get security down to the “rubber rooms” the inmates are going mad to-night for some reason!!! Oh! and bring the horse tranquelizer as well please!! No it’s not for me,its for them in the “rooms” Cheers Dennis.

Thanks for the replies never realise HE were so large!

Regarding Donnans fishing boats how many did they own? (how many lorries did they own?) Maybe someone might post a photo of one on here of one of the trawlers. It seems as if Scott Trawlers are a similar business to Donnans they even have a smart fleette of about five top of the range Scanias.

A little bit of trivia when I knew Lawsons about 30 years ago they considered buying a trawler.

C.G.said H.E.are based at FPL buildings at Cargo , which is basically the same area as Harker.Georgeking i also remember delivering fuel to Donnans on Whitehaven quay way back in the 70s-early 80s, the forman on the quay was a good bloke watched you down the quay not a easy job reversing an artic right to the tanks on the end ,i always came away with good bit of fish.Vic.

Hiya Vic, IIRC when we took fuel to H.E, we turned left just before the little service station at Harker, went through the trees over the motorway and turned right, I always said it was at Harker if anyone asked directions. Be good, Mizzo.

We got to keep them from over the west right Les,but i think it was our side of the motorway,Vic.

Hiya Vic, you are of course right again, and I am of course wrong again!!! Mizzo.
