Thanks for the replies never realise HE were so large!

Regarding Donnans fishing boats how many did they own? (how many lorries did they own?) Maybe someone might post a photo of one on here of one of the trawlers. It seems as if Scott Trawlers are a similar business to Donnans they even have a smart fleette of about five top of the range Scanias.

A little bit of trivia when I knew Lawsons about 30 years ago they considered buying a trawler.

C.G.said H.E.are based at FPL buildings at Cargo , which is basically the same area as Harker.Georgeking i also remember delivering fuel to Donnans on Whitehaven quay way back in the 70s-early 80s, the forman on the quay was a good bloke watched you down the quay not a easy job reversing an artic right to the tanks on the end ,i always came away with good bit of fish.Vic.

Hiya Vic, IIRC when we took fuel to H.E, we turned left just before the little service station at Harker, went through the trees over the motorway and turned right, I always said it was at Harker if anyone asked directions. Be good, Mizzo.

The photo of the trawler is excellent, I believe that the Donnans were originally from Kilkeel in Northern Ireland with other bases at Whitehaven and Plymouth. The lorries must have been used to unload the fish from trawlers and transport them to various fish markets and processing factories. I think that Donnans even had their own processing in Whitehaven at one time.

It appears that JC Hope of Gosforth was the other haulier who transported fish etc for Donnans, were they also the haulier for Woodhall’s of Waberthwaite?

Is there still any fish landed at Whitehaven today, are there any fishing boats based there anymore?

By rod from the end of the dock!! When the tides in,of course!!

Hello,
Can anyone help me. Where does Edmund Brewer have his yard in Penrith?

Hello georgeking,
Donnans had their own fish shop on the front in Whitehaven. It’s now Zest Cafe.
Hope this helps.

Hello georgking,
Donnans are still on the go! I’ve just seen a van at Moota with ‘Donnans Fish Supplies Ltd, Whitehaven’ on the side. I think it said North Shore, Whitehaven.
Hope this helps.

Shot of the old yard in Milnthorpe, spot the mistake? A Bubble thats blocked in by decent motors!! IIRC it was an F86 I had through my hands in a “deal” but had no intention of running and it passed through like a big turd!! ugh! Cheers Dennis.

Hello Bewick,
Seeing the F86 reminds me that A D Boyes at Ireby restored a F86 back in 1992 for the Volvo 25th Birthday. Heritage Commercials did a artical on it back in 2007 (got a copy of that one). Boyes F86 is the first in the UK. Althought Boyes didn’t use the lorry for Haulage (they used it as a shunter), a farmer at Penrith (the Second Owner) did use it for Haulage.
Does anyone know who that Farmer at Penrith was?

Hi ■■■■■■■■ Gill thanks again for all of you replies which are very interesting, Tyson Burridge and Duncan Hill certainly have their fingers in a few pies and it’s nice to see that Stobert does not have a complete monopoly in ■■■■■■■■

Waberer are a very interesting company they are based in Budapest and a few years took over one of the largest and most famous haulage companies in Europe Hungarocamion also from Budapest. In their day Hungarocamion were as big as Norbert Dentressangle or Willi Betz,

Hungarocamion was a state owned transport company originally called Volan Tefu, Georg Waberer put a lot of investment into two companies that later became the privatised Hungarocamion. It has since changed its name to Waberers.

Just like CSAD (CZ) PeKaeS (PL) and Somat (BG) as the walls crumbled around the Eastern Bloc these companies were opened for investment and takeover, in a similar way to our own BTC.

Somat became Willi Betz.

PKS still trades under that name but with private shareholders. their market is Bus and Transport

CSAD. Bus and Trucks is now CSAD Logistik Ostrava.

F86’s provided excellent service at Mealsgate! Why did very successful hauliers such as Lawsons buy them if they were rubbish?

hiya,
Ah the F86 great little motor, but only up to a six wheeled rigid, they was rubbish as an eight legger and as a thirty two tonner artic well underpowered, they wouldn’t drag you off the lavvy.
thanks harry long retired.
