Does anyone know much about Donnans of Whitehaven, are they still based there and what did they do? I have noticed that the photo of their lorry on this thread has Plymouth (not Whitehaven) on the trailer. They appear to be a similar type of business as Scott Trawlers.
This is a bit trivial, the Donnan family formed a lot of companies most of them registered in Northern Ireland:-
R.Donnan (Enterprises) Limited
R Donnan Enterprises Limited
R. Donnan Fish Selling Limited
R Donnan Shellfish Limited
W Donnan & Son Enterprises Limited
W. Donnan (Seafoods) Limited
S. & R. Donnan Seafoods Limited

I can re-call that in the '50s A.D. Boyes would sometimes work for Donnans.I think it used to be one of those “rush” jobs that happened when there were Donnan trawlers docking in W.■■■■■■■ and motors were required at short notice to transport the fish to various markets. But my memory is vague now but I do remember it was Donnan’s and time was of the essence!! Cheers Dennis.

Thanks for the replies, why do Donnans have Quantus on their vehicles? I would like to find out more about Donnans. There used to be a company called Haulage Express it belonged to one of the fruit merchants either Fred Proudfoot or WB Anderson. And who remembers the huge fleet of West ■■■■■■■■■■ Farmers now a shadow of themselves called WCF but back into haulage http://www.wcf.co.uk/distribution.aspx
Yeah, they belonged to Fred Proudfoot and were based at Fred Proudfoots Buildings at Harker, delivered fuel to them for a lot of years.
Hi there still is a company Haulage Express I see them going south through Sanquhar regularly.
Donnans— I remember Willie Irving who ran a Commer Maxiload flat he was an Owner Driver from Cockermouth and subbed for Tyson Burridge but occasionally did a load for Donnan and he told me old man Donnan wandered around as they were loading on the quay and they only got the go ahead to stop loading when he found it hard to get his hand between the back wing and the tyre. Eddie.

quantus quevardis and genesis where donnans trawlers
Hello,
Haulage Express are based at the FPL Buildings at Cargo. The Operate 50 Lorries (Scania & Mercedies). They mainly do haulage for United Biscuits (Carr’s of Carlisle) at Carlisle. They often go to Stobart’s Carlisle HQ with biscuits and unload them at Stobart’s Warehouse at Kingstown.
Hope this is interesting.

Thanks for the replies never realise HE were so large!Regarding Donnans fishing boats how many did they own? (how many lorries did they own?) Maybe someone might post a photo of one on here of one of the trawlers. It seems as if Scott Trawlers are a similar business to Donnans they even have a smart fleette of about five top of the range Scanias.
A little bit of trivia when I knew Lawsons about 30 years ago they considered buying a trawler.
C.G.said H.E.are based at FPL buildings at Cargo , which is basically the same area as Harker.Georgeking i also remember delivering fuel to Donnans on Whitehaven quay way back in the 70s-early 80s, the forman on the quay was a good bloke watched you down the quay not a easy job reversing an artic right to the tanks on the end ,i always came away with good bit of fish.Vic.
