This is a shot taken at Whitehaven when Smith Bros were re-building their factory and is a shot of our 60 ft trombone waiting to tip a load of structral steel we have brought up from Ibis Engineers of Kendal.

EDDIE STOBART FAN:

Thats why Stobart is good for the industry, he put all of these cowboys out of business and did the job more professionally.

I think this “person” can be ignored. Normal people certainly can’t take him seriously.

Taking sense, is it only me who gets the feeling that the Stobart bubble will eventually burst? A person or a company can’t live on credit and debt forever.

hiya,
Grumpy Old Man you are by no means on your own, there have been firms with virtually zero debt who have gone to the wall not even a firm as large and “self proclaimed powerful” are not insulated from the current climate, time will tell I guess.

Here are a few more

Hello everyone,
Thanks georgeking and little ha ba for posting replies to my posts about Armstrong’s and Burridges. Little ha ba, the photos just get better, any more? George, Yes Smiths ran factories at Whitehaven and Salterbeck. They ran a large fleet of Commer’s, DAF’s, ERF’s, Dodge’s and I think BMC’s. About Boyes, They still do Halage from Corus at Workington, mainly scrap steel which is taken to the North East.
Just for you George, here is a photo of a restored Commer Smith’s Wagon, Owned by Colin Patterson of Whitehaven. the lorry was owned by Smiths but then went to a Worknington Potato Supplier.

Hello georgeking,
Yes, Burridge still haul out of Tornado Wire at Millom

Hello george,
Yes, DEC at Workington does make cast products still. I recomend viewing tatasteeleurope.co.uk where you will find out exactly what they make.
Hope this helps.

Bewick:
That must have been Don Bewick,“george” we never ran out of Smith Bros. but we used to deliver loads of Bleach Kraft paper into Smiths at Hensingham from Henry Cookes,Beetham Mill. These loads were usually collected by Smiths contractors as a back load after delivering into Lancashire and for a good few years by Shaws of Lindale after they had tipped cement at builders merchants in the area. But regularly we were still called on to deliver (usually desperate) urgent loads as Smiths work/production always seemed to be time sensetive and required “yesterday” so this is where the proffessionals had to take over as the “marras” were never able to respond in time!!! Cheers Dennis.PS this is a shot of a load of Cookes paper on its side in Ambleside! We reloaded it and never damaged a reel! Smiths, apparently were that “tight” they wouldn’t pay for the reels to be wrapped (Typical Marra outfit!!)

Dennis have a look at this link, type in Milnthorpe. you’ll see that Bewick had two vehicles based there and six at at T Brady’s in Barrow In Furness.

Hiya “george”,I realise you were trying to tell me something that I must have surely known about having been M.D. of Bewick Transportation Group(so I must have had a “paralell” operation running that I knew nothing about!) Sorry to disappoint though but I left the group in 1996 and at that time our operating centres,IIRC, were as follows.Milnthorpe depot,Kendal depot,East Lancs Mill,Radcliffe.Irlam depot,Devon Valley Mill,Dunstable and Modo Merchants Weybridge. What the idiots did or didn’t do after my time was nowt to do with me,but looking at the list of their later operating centres it would seem that they were chasing their tails and losing ground all over.An operating centre at Brady’s,do me a favour, and one up in Marra land!! Don’t make me laugh, they must have been bloody desperate “workwise” by the looks of things!! Cheers Dennis.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think its a hell of a coincidence that Hodge just happens to be on hand with his trusty camera whenever all these mishaps occur? To be honest Paul, if ever I see you coming towards me with your box brownie I’ll be putting handbrake on and running like f**k before disaster strikes lol
good photo’s all the same, any of Tom Hazelwoods motors in your collection?

Eyup Dennis, where exactly is the frontier between “ave yer not,can yer not, will yer not” country and “Marra land”?
Is it the old Furness district of Lancs county boundary?
Just wondered. :grimacing:

hiya Chris, well modern ■■■■■■■ is made up of two and a “bit” old counties,■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ and The Furness district of Lancashire.Pre '74 there was (and still is) an old saying “nowt any good kem ower’t Raise, beyeth ways!!” so I suppose Dunmail Raise was the token boundary between ■■■■■■■■■■ and Westmorland although there was a joint Constabulary and a joint Education authority for many years. Now as far as Furness and Barrow in particular, the general feeling of the residents of this area was that they were part of a superior County,Lancashire, and looked down on C & W (but where did Barrow RFL club get all their best players from? Why West ■■■■■■■■■■ of course!! And they had the big Vickers yard as-well! But to get from Lancashire proper to Furness you had to travel through Westmorland and to the north of Furness there was ■■■■■■■■■■■■■ I believe that it made sense for Furness to be part of ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ what has a nice part of the world like ■■■■■■■■■■ and Westmorland gained from absorbing Barrow/Furness,well lets see now----1) The longest cul-de-sac in the UK (A590), 2)The Motability capital of England (there wouldn’t be any franchised car dealers in Barrow if it weren’t for this scheme!)3)The largest % of un-married mothers in the UK.4) Rampant drug abuse, there’s always a car getting pulled by the law on the A590 and £’000 of drugs getting found! Oh!,it might have improved now but the Barrovian work force could always teach the scousers a thing or two about “militancy” and I know i’ve had a taste of it over the years!! Oooo fell of me soap box ain’t I!! Cheers Dennis.
