Hello everyone,
Yes harrygill and Bewick, I should say sorry to Carl over the spelling in my last post (I wasn’t in gear again!!!). And Yes, I did go to Wigton Nelson (Yes it was Crap). Thanks to hodgeturbo for posting the photos of Watson’s of Arlecdon Tippers.
Cheers

(P.S. Bewick, for your infomation I don’t even like Count Down (another waste of electric, unlike Eddie Stobart - Trucks and Trailers!!!).
Hiya CG,I didn’t like Countdown either nor did I watch it! I just thought you might benefit from a bit of help with your spelling!! and if your a product of Nelson Thomlinson education (Grammar School) it dosen’t say a lot for the pupils that went to the Secondary school (The cabbage factory) up the road!!And as you are a self confessed “Eddie” fan you are ,indeed,a very sad man!!! I’m not at all sure you can get help for what ails you,but medical science is improving all the time I suppose!!! make sure you wrap up warm when you go out! Cheers Bewick.
hiya,
Well Dennis don’t the very few Eddie fans “can’t be many” have anoraks to keep them warm when spotting something which are as liberal as horse manure at Royal Ascot, PS “Gill” no relation I hasten to add.
thanks harry long retired.
Fair enough “H” we’ll take you word for it that your not related!! Until, that is, we are in receipt of conclusive proof to the contrary! I hope you realise that this could set off a whole new thread to rival “The Big J 8LXB”!!! If you are related don’t worry you can’t be held responsible for the antics of your “inbred” relatives from Wigton! We won’t hold it against you mate!!! (All to-gether lads----Yes we —king will!!!) Cheers Dennis.
Bit of a long shot here; has anybody got pics of an Atki-Borderer owned by Jock McCaulay (RDC 746M) painted green in Watts of Carlisle colours (pre 1982), and/or an ERF owned by David Mulholland Penrith (FAO 727V) painted beige, green red (pre 1983) both these motors are on a previous post in KTS colours.

Got a question for you Paul eh! Is there still a quarry at Moota? On the right going towards C/mouth.In the 50’s as a youngster I used to ride with both my uncle and Joe Mumberson from Ireby when they ran into this quarry to haul tarmac. My uncle drove a tipper for Bobbie Mcguffie who along with a “B” licence had a garage /filling station in the village.Mumbersons were primarily coal merchants but also had a “B” licence and did tipper work. A.D. Boyes had the “A” licenced motors in the village then. Oh! and IIRC there was a pub on the opposite side of the road from the quarry and (I think) that this was the pub Bill Pattinson took over after he sold his two tankers to H & M E,but I could be wrang eh! Did Bill Patti have a driver called ****** Messenger that worked for him,I seem to remember Bill had a D1000 Artic that pulled a flat trailer and this gadgy was the driver, same as the first artic Robbie Boyes had after the Albion Reiver. Old memories eh! Cheers Dennis.
yes that ones still open dennis now owned by cemex a mexican cement company the one on the same side as moota motel is closed and is owned by d a harrison
Thanks for that Paul! IIRC the other one owned by Harrisons was origionally operated by Adam Lythgoe (big Lime spreading firm) and was called Clintz Quarry IIRC from all those many years ago, phew!! Cheers Dennis.
It’s getting a bit short of a decent motor or two on this thread! A shot of a Bewick International 440 Merc stood at Henry Cookes,Beetham Mill after loading for Germany.
Another shot of one of the 5 Merc tractors we ran, seen here at our warehousing site on Shap rd. in Kendal it is coupled to one of a number of Lawrence David 4 mtr high,13.7 mtr long curtainsiders we ran to and from mainland Europe.

Dennis looking at the Merc, I can see the logic using it for Germany, back up etc, but did you ship out any of your British motors at any time, I remember Watts having enough faith in their ERFs with little or no dealership on the Continent in the 80s.

No,we ran two seperate operations and only sent Mercs,Scanias and Renaults to the mainland.By the time we started the international work I don’t think we had many British motors left, maybe a couple of Sed Atks?.Cheers Dennis.

P.S Bewick, Moota Quarry is still on the go. I think it’s mainly tar work now. Scotts of Maryport do regular runs to the Quarry for tar, which is used on the Carlisle Northern Development Route. Talking about the Moota Motel, there’s plans to develop that into a 40 bedroom hotel with parking (it got the go ahead last year (2010). Nothing is going on though.

I remember Dave Mullholland before he became Stobarts photographer! I think he had at one time an F16 tag axle working out of British Gypsum. The unit was very heavy however as the FL10’s on Richard Holmes could carry about 1-2 ton more.
Just remembered I have a book by David Jacobs with a colour photo of that ERF.

Just a shame he got all that Southern Cockney arcitecture instead of a close.
Thanks for the replies on the Atk & ERF, (that trucksgalore site is def worth a look, a lot of old ■■■■■■■■ trucks on there if you search through) another request-…Has anybody got any pics of Micaply (Silloth) motors 70s&80s blue TKs and later gold KMs
lawsons parked on workington docks

The livery was Black and Silver and was sporting a name (Solway ?). I’ve seen the lorry coming out of Tata/Corus Rail Products,Workington this week.
