Hiya Larry, how yer garn on Marra ? Well I was born in Rhyhope and “fetched” up first in North ■■■■■■■ (which L600 will confirm) then in Westmorland (now South ■■■■■■■■■■■ upper class bit eh !) as the old “hound trailing” craic goes “nowt any good kem ‘owert’ Raise (Dunmail) beath ways” Cheers Dennis.

Hi Dennis, speaking of Dunmail Raise I knew of a ■■■■■■■■■■ Motor Services driver from Maryport taking a local excursion south over the Raise who also had an American tourist couple on board and as you know there is a large heap of big stones on the Raise summit. As the coach passed the American guy says , " Say driver, whats that large heap of stones doing there in the middle of the dual carriagway is that where they reckon King Dunmail king of ■■■■■■■■■■ is buried ?" Our intrepid answers in broad dialect " Oh no Marra it just a greet heap o stanes left theer be,t ■■■■■■■ when they mead t new rod" !! So much for an informative driver and ancient history.
Cheers Leyland 600

I visited Glenn Harley’s garage today. Some great trucks there, ancient and modern.

My favourite is this T Brady & Sons Scania, mid restoration. The original cab is there, looking very sad. Glenn bought this left hand drive cab from the continent and converted it. What has been done looks brand new, with original engine and gearbox colour.

He says it’s the only T Brady restoration now. The Octopus with the LAD cab has been repainted in other colours (he’s younger than me - he told me whose, but I can’t remember what he said!)

I always thought the Bradys colours looked brilliant and I still do.

John

Hiya John, nice shots of the Brady resto’111,and I notice Glen has got the correct sign writing in the headboard, SONS! The Big’un will be smiling down quite happy about this I’m sure, I did tell the young’un when he dropped the “S” off the name that it was ■■■■■■■ childish but it was water off a ducks back at the time ! I know that the “craic” for many years was the Big’un was only the “S” in the Sons but that was most unfair and couldn’t be farther from the truth as Jackie used to tell me.When they were buying motors and trailers Jackie used to tell me that no matter how he (Jack) thought he could get a good deal the “jammy” Big’un could always squeeze just that bit more out of a deal !! Plus the Big’un always got invited to a “Launch” and mixed amongst the " Hoi Poloi" and he never changed his persona, pure Barrovian Son !!! Cheers Dennis.

A long way from home @ Buxton

Talking about Alston, makes me reminisce about J H Henderson & Sons, a fleet of green ERF’s based in Alston. How they coped on the A689 is beyond me. J H Henderson & Sons also owned a garage in Alston, not too sure if they are still in business.

Hendersons motors very rarely ran up to Alston, they were based at Langwathby near Penrith and that side of the firm was managed by Tony Henderson the son of Bob who was a son of the founder J.H…Yes they did have a Garage business in Alston to-gether with a Rootes dealership and I believe this part of the operation was managed by Tony’s cousin. Tony’s brother Malcolm was a Police constable in Kendal during the 60’s and 70’s.They were a great old fashioned firm of many years standing, the last I heard of Tony was that he was running a Limo fleet from Langwathby but I’m not too sure about the Alston end. Cheers Bewick.

Here is a fine photo of a JH Henderson with a RR 265 engine

J & W Watt never realised they ran Scanias always thought that they were an ERF fleet

Bollox, old Bob Henderson would be turning in his grave if he thought such a motor had appeared in his fleet, they were big Leyland men and then Gardner forever!! Bewick.
