I’m sure you’re right Dennis. Do you remember the Cairds mouldings that Athersmiths used to carry?

I met one of them on my scooter at the bottom of Mill Brow, buried about 9 inches deep in the Tarmac!

It had come off, having had nothing except gravity to hold it it on! No police there, just the driver, waving everybody on by!

John.

Yes, I’d forgotten about the paper mills. Athersmith’s main backload was China Clay from Cornwall, wasn’t it.

Bloody horrendous John when that happens, and very dangerous as well,I recall one of our McGuffie fleet dropped a heavy electro magnet off on a corner coming through Rydal, the idiot had left Workington without chaining it down or even nailing skids around it to stop it sliding at least,it put a 2 foot dent in the tarmac and if it had landed on a car coming the other way well!!! :open_mouth: The stupid ■■■■■■■ driver got done £250 at Windermere Magistrates court and we got done £50 for “permitting” the stupidity. Needless to say that driver’s employment at Bewick Transport came to an abrupt end. Cheers Dennis.

Aye John they used to send motors from London, empty all the down to St Austell for clay and the lazy ■■■■■■■■ at Athsmiths nearly took a week to do the round trip as they were on BRS 23 mph. They had some of the laziest ■■■■■■■ drivers I had ever seen no wonder most of them went to Blue Dart when Brady’s took over and they exported their pathetic work ethic to them but Blue dart were a load of lazy ■■■■■ also so the ex Athersmith crew felt at home !!IIRC it took Blue Dart 2 days to get a trailer from Bowies to London, they loaded their traffic say on Monday for delivery on Wednesday. We loaded ours on Monday and delivered it at 7am Tuesday. Cheers Dennis.

Ingmire:
Who was that large fleet of black volvos from Millom?

Hi,

That would be Ashburners, who ran F10s or F12s for a lot of years, I think they had F88s before that. I think they ran tipping trailers out of Ghyll Scaur quarry and also vans out of Bowater Scott at Barrow. They also did some loads to the Middle East, subbed from Mike Conlong, who ran Nodag.

John

Thanks John, I think that ME Saunders haul out of Ghyll Scaur quarry, Millom, I stand to be corrected though.

Hi Ingmire, apologies for the late reply to your query. Yes , Saturday 5th September The ■■■■■■■■ Trunk Run this year begins at Braithwaite lay by on the A66 near Keswick as usual running down to Carnforth Truck Stop, I am not sure if they are going through the Lakes or across to Penrith and down at old A6 most probable then returning to Levens Bridge and A590 to Greenodd across to Silecroft and up the A 595 finishing for the night at St Bees. Sunday 6th Sept St Bees to White Heather Hotel Kirkbride as usual through Workington and Maryport I think, more details later.
Cheers Leyland 600.

Thanks Leyland600, the North Pennine route seemed very appealing.
