Errrr!

Why would you keep going until it was axle deep? Don’t send that man across H4!

John.

Dayson

I think that Dayson driver coming off the ferry looks like a lad known as Smudger from Silloth.
He was at Robsons before that, and I think P.A (Tony) Morgan.
He then went to Oss in Holland to work for Harry Vos on a wagon and drag.

Daysons ran the Middle East and Europe in a lot of second hand ex. Peter Hinchcliffe Scanias which had already been thrashed to hell on tipper work

Hi Hodge, This ERF 66GX was new to British Rayophane (Sidac now Innovia) back about 1960 I think and replaced two LAD cabbed Albion Chieftains driven by the one driver BR employed regularly running to John Players at Nottingham and Wills cigarette factort at Bristol with cellophane wrapping paper for all the ■■■■ made there. While Joe was down the road with one Albion the other was being loaded at Wigton for the next trip. This went on for a number of years until the ERF arrived brand new and was a real bonnie wagon in its dark blue livery. Eventually in the 1970s it was sold to W.P.Bell and Sons Wigton where it remained hauling cattle cake from BOCM at Selby until the remaining Bell bros retired and Alan Harrison acquired the premises and the wagon , then changed the livery. As for Joe the driver who is my near neighbour he is approaching 92 and hale 7 hearty, the fact that he used to get his empty bait box filled with cigarettes on every visit to Nottingham or Bristol proves that smoking cant be all that bad, (However it is a long time since he gave up puffing).

Happy New Year to you all , Leyland 600.

What was the sand quarry near Silloth. Hell of a drop down into the bottom if you turned right off the weighbridge? Fair character worked in there, from Allonby I think.

Hi Hodge, No it was known as “The Stampery” immediately behind where ATS is now and part of which I acquired in 1978 as an operating centre when Harrisons sold the whole complex. I operated both wagons and coaches from the yard until late 2004 when retiring but carried on keeping my restored ERF there until 2010 when the garage and yard was sold.
