Culina stafford or Gist Crewe class 1

Anyone work there? Would this be heavily handball and store deliveries? I have no class 1 experience and thinking its time to gain some. Heard they take on newbies?

I doubt you’d ever touch the load with Culina. Mostly RDC work where you sit in waiting rooms for hours on end wether you have 2 pallets or 26. The salary is decent at just over £30k but it depends on how many hours they get out of you with all that waiting around. I’ve heard the start times can be quite early too on chilled.

As a newbie though I’d say go for it, you have to cut your teeth somewhere and there’s much worse out there that’s for sure.

All chilled, though rarely an occasional ambient load from somewhere. Never heard of a handball drop.
The yard can be busy and a bit err tight…
Easy work, long hours and crazy start times, 24/7 deliveries.
100% to the book, no shortcuts!!

When you say early and crazy start times… what sort of timing are we looking at?

I geuss 15 hours day is the normal thing there then.

The company I work for do subby work out of Wolverhampton depot. As others have said mostly RDC work. Most strenuous thing I have had to do with one of their loads is open the back doors.

Start times vary, iirc you’ll have a “window, 3 hrs possibly “ and will generally start within that during your week. As most deliveries are to RDCs that are open 24/7 you are planned to satisfy them. You could start literally anytime between 00:00 and 23:59
12hr is standard shift length, but it’s transport and anything can happen!
Occasional nights out.
Not sure what shift patterns at Stafford, but think many available. 5/2, 5/3, 4/4
Give them a call.

A lot of chilled work is between midnight and 2am starts. Maybe a bit earlier/later. Shift lengths can vary but the issue is it’s salary paid so if Tossco want to sit you on a bay for 4 hours to tip your 3 pallets then it eats into your average hourly rate.

On the flip side they take on new drivers and all the kit is about as good as it gets. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a tatty Culina vehicle/trailer.

Do the long hours and silly start times, then when you get a decent job you’ll appreciate it more. Unlike the 20/30+ year experience whingers at our place who think they’re hard done by earning £40k+ to push a few pallets off the back of the trailer and doing a 12 hour shift requires phoning the daily mail to give them the huge news.

Thanks mate

We’ve got one about 2 mins from my house the one on the a38 derby. If u got your own truck I would be very very tempted. I don’t mind the early at all but got used to my own unit now.

I worked for the Lutterworth branch. Salaried, based on a 10hr day, so if you go over that, you’re losing out. About half the time I was doing 10 hrs. Other days it was 12/14 hrs. Drivers love to moan, but the job wasn’t half bad. The hardest I worked was at a popcorn factory in Leicester where I loaded with pallets which were about 100kg each and I had to wheel them from the back to the front.

Give it a go, there’s far worse places to work

To be honest its not bad salary… i wonder if they pay bonus on top too

Ha ha ha! Wysiwyg

No handballing a lot of rdc work with collections too, it can seem tight at times if you’re inexperienced, good kit everything is done by the book, start times can be harsh but there will be later start times too, some nights out but not many unless you want it of course and some drivers don’t do any, you’re not pushed too hard but sometimes you’ll get a 13plus day they base it on roughly an 11 hr day. If they still do 5 x3 then that’s not a bad pattern.

Cheers guys… just worried about failing my driving assessment :frowning: … as i have not drive class 1 since i passed my test and it was using a drawbar.

Have you ever driven a “proper artic”?
If not have you thought about doing a half day training or summat in one?

We have had a fair number of blokes walk into our place (indeed one left for Culina & came back) from the local Culina depot looking for greener grass. It’s always the same story, took the job because of the very good salary & talk of 10 hour days… turned out to be a lot of 12+ hour days and of course no overtime.

Much worse outfits to work for than Culina, but always remember that if it sounds too good to be true then it normally is. You will always cop for plenty of long shifts working for a hire & reward outfit.

To be honest though, even with the unpaid overtime the money you will make at Culina still easily rivals what you will make at most other places. I’d work for them.

Nope never driven one… was thinking of doing that.

Probably a good move. Make sure the assessor knows youre inexperienced of course, but a half day or so with a trainer will give you a helping hand. Its not witchcraft to drive an artic, but doing an assessment for your first drive? Hmmm.

Let him know you’re inexperienced he should allow for that especially if you pass the personality test !!
