Blimey! I’ve only just signed up on here, but looking at the pics it all comes flooding back. The guy I worked for used to sub off LKW Walters, so I used to meet lots of Dons boys out and about. Do any of you remember Jim Smith who drove for Don? Saw him quite regular in the mid- nineties doing Italian work. Nice to see some of my old haunts. Did Ray Larcombe drive an F89 with a low-loader? He looks familiar, I seem to remember being stuck in Piacenza customs for a couple of days with him.
Who was you on for Brookie? Were you doing the nappies/soap powder?
Ray Larcombe never had a low loader, I can pretty much guarantee that, I’ve known him for 30 years & can’t remember it, I’m pretty sure he never had an 89 either.
Hi newmercman,
I was driving for radcliffe eurotrans for 6 years, most of that for Walters and most of that Italian. Yep, nappies to Chieti (or somewhere near there!) and Rome, same nappies out, put on different pallets and back to Trafford Park! Did the soap to Thurrock too, from all over, Italy, Spain etc. Also alot of steel to Rocca Canavese, bloody nightmare road in winter, but a doddle of a job. Lots of other stuff too for Walters (and Davies Turner, Samson, P&O) I finished about 1997, he couldn’t make it pay anymore, still miss the job big time. I’m driving trains for a living now, but miss distance work, I did it for 16 years. Gets in your blood doesn’t it? It becomes more than just a job!
hi brookie, you asking about jim smith aka biffo, yes he is still kicking around somewhere, he will be at the xmas reunion, i shall tell him you was asking.
i must have bumped into you at sometime as i did italy for about 10 yrs, i was working for fred young at purfleet then.
