So I’ve got my 5 days of my CPC to complete. I’ve been at my job for four years.
My boss is saying he’ll pay for the course but I’ve got to take the days off as holiday! I’ve never had experience in this before what’s the deal with you guys and your CPC with your jo? Cheers
Sounds a good deal, it’s a short week

I did forget to mention he wants me to sign something to say I can’t leave within two years. So the CPC is just for his work essentially.
Only professionals get paid to attend compulsory workplace training.
So he wants you to sign to say you’ll pay the cost back if you leave but he won’t pay you to attend…
What a bloody lovely boss you have
Our place pay for the course and pays the normal working day for us attending…it’s a course that they need you to do so you can do the job you are employed to do,let them pay.
As a last resort pay for it yourself and do it on your days off,no way I’d lose 5 of my day’s holidays on a course which is essentially other work.
The cost to him to put you in the course will be minimal…
We have to come in on a Saturday unpaid (But they do count it as other work so we don’t get shafted like at a previous job where you could work 6 day weeks before and after) unless we get hours from forklift/hiab training mid week.
Where I would they pay for passports for those of us doing international work as they want to make use of it, I needed an emergency one so they paid for the train to London and the same day passport.

I had to fund the last one myself. Agency I’m with pay for DCPC training but I don’t get paid for going.
There is no legal right to it being paid for by your employer or you being paid to go.
Simple fact of the matter is that right or wrong, it’s your qualification and your responsibility to make sure it’s up to date, or you can’t work.
Some firms will help out from paying for the courses right up to paying you for the working time while you attend them, but there is no legal obligation for them to do so.
Yes sure you need to have it in order to do their work so maybe they should pay, and the better companies do, but again they have no legal obligation to pay for the course, give you time off to attend the course, or pay you for time off while you do the course.
Sorry an all that, but maybe time to have a think about the terms and conditions your company offer and start looking at better alternatives.
I worked for a well known medium size company in 2007, when I left they deducted haz training from my wages.
The boss would not recognise a union or indeed have any one to do with a trade union in his yard, which made a number of us join one for our own protection.
When I left I contacted the union about the deduction in my wages and despite numerous requests for a meeting he refused to discuss the matter with the union rep for that area.
It eventually went to tribunal and the Judge ruled in my favor saying that the case should not have come as far as it did, Because if the job required me to have a haz licence in order to get the job then when it was up for renewal then the company should pay.
All the deductions were payed back to me.
surely if you have been working there for four years you took your dcpc with you,so the company should pay to have it renewed.

DCPC is a driver’s own responsibility as mentioned above.

You’ve got this the wrong way round Chris, it’s a qualification which you need in order to do your job. If you no longer have it, your employer needs to find a replacement which may be inconvenient, but as you have effectively resigned he has no choice. A great many employers do pay for it and some pay for you to attend, but that is part of your company employment terms, legally it’s your responsibility to have it.
As already said the responsibility to have a DCPC rests squarely with the driver.
Loads of variation in what different companies offer. Could be a measure of other conditions there and of their general attitude?
For the OP having the cost of the course being deducted if leaving for up to two years, and having to take holiday entitlement.
Ask around…here!.. whether any courses are being offered on weekends locally to you, and what the cost is. Decide whether or not you`d prefer to keep your hols for yourself, and keep your ability to move jobs easily. You may get to choose which course you attend too, but not much if you are a singleton joining an existing course.
Are there many drivers with you? If a dozen of you get together and approach a trainer it could be a winner? Choose the course and the day you agree on.
It may work for you.
At my old place you got paid to sit the course and because the shifts were pre-booked there was a ruling that they couldn’t take you off a 13hr shift to sit a CPC and get paid just eight hours, they had to pay the higher so you’d get the full 13hr for sitting a CPC.
Current place doesn’t make you pay for it but does run it on a Saturday unpaid.
Exactly the same as licence renewals and driver medicals, some pay for them some don’t but you are responsible for having them. My employer pays for all of it. CPC course, taken off the road on a normal shift paid (I even managed to sneak an hour OT out of the last one) Driver medical and licence costs reimbursed etc. I believe we can even take 2hrs at the beginning or end of shift paid to attend doctors/dentist so even going for the medical would be paid
Lots of people slate unions but thats the sort of T&C’s that they get you and fight to keep hold of!
Our place provides and pays for the course and pays us overtime at time+a half to do the training on a Saturday (or double-time if on a Sunday). They also pay for medicals at licence renewal time and for digicard renewals. No lock-in or payback either. Previous lot used to do much the same except courses were held on a normal working day (Mon-Fri) with agency drivers covering the runs.
If the boss is paying for the course but won’t pay wages for the day(s), fine just tell him you’ll do it on a Saturday so you don’t waste personal holiday time.
I paid 5x £80 for mine
Our place pays for our CPC on a Saturday. We have to take the course unpaid

Last time round paid myself as was working on n off via different agency’s.
This time I mentioned it was told we will book you on the course on a saturdays.
You attended unpaid as were paying the course fees.
God knows when it’s happening as if it’s a Saturday be 5 weeks and September is soon approaching.
Don’t know why cant just 1 course every couple of months instead of leaving it to last minute
So he wants you to sign on for two years for an input of £300 + vat.
Sounds like a cracking deal. What a generous caring company.
Sheesh
