CPC module 4 tests are an absolute farce. If you have a shy 18 - 24yr old that doesn’t really talk easily then you’re gona struggle on the mod 4 test. I recently trained a young man on his cat C and found him an absolute joy to work with, he listened, worked hard and the end result was a first time pass on his cat C. A natural driver. Arranged his mod 4 and was really confidant he had it in the bag!!
The result was he had the most annoying, wet behind the ears jobsworth of an examiner who read the questions parrot fashion with no life from his card in such a dull dreary manner he would have made Clement Freud look lively!!
The lad knows his way round the truck and can give the correct answer to any direct question thrown at him, but when expected to elaborate and explain further he dries up and needs prompting along.
So now i take it we have to give lessons in confidence and public speaking, delivery etc!!
What a bloody farce! or is it a little like the X factor for drivers?
Or am i on my own here?
Your comments please cos i’m confused.com
Unfortunately, getting an examiner who does not have ‘people skills’ is just bad luck.
I cannot see how that will change if the examiner is just ‘doing the job’ for the sake of the job.
Did the ‘lad’ pass the test ? - if not, try a different test station
No sadly he didn’t and i’ve already had him booked into charm school for his next audition which is due this Thurs at same test ctr. Hopefully Dr Death will be off sick and i’ll get one thats HUMAN
It does annoy the hell out of me tho, The lad had 2 canceled tests cause of bad weather but of course cost him 2 days off work! and of course another day off work for his last audition!!
Should it really be that false? The guy who reads the book and delivers the info but really doesn’t understands what its all about gets thro!! and the natural driver now struggles.
Give me strength
Have you given him any training?
The problem with this test is that there is no real guidelines from the DSA apart from “read the book” so sometimes it has to be trial and error untill you do enough to see what exactly the examiner is wanting.
How many trainees have you had for the mod 4 test?
I’ve had a few through the mod 4, my point is that some of these youngsters are not always full of confidence and delivering the info required is sometimes like drawing blood from a stone. The guy in question if asked in a direct way for any answer would give it and as i said knew his way round the truck. Because he was conservative with the answers he was penalised. I’m still not a fan of this way of testing them in fact the whole ■■■■ thing is just a moneymaking exercise isn’t it!!
Lets face it the periodic CPC is just a case of pay yr money, turn up to class fall asleep but at least you’ve attended. get yr cert and yr free to carry on!! True??

I’d just like to say the guy in question went and passed it today at the 2nd attempt, learned from the first time and gave everything plus a little more today.
I’m still not a fan of this test as its so painfully slow and laboured, i appreciate the examiners have their guidelines but it doesn’t work. Sorry.
yes he had training, thats what i do!!
and trail and error is no way to conduct tests, so doing enough to see what the examiner wants has to be done at someones expense - well sorry i don’t buy that either. Its just been so poorly thought out…

I feel personally the examiners should cut you some slack, If they see you know your stuff and show them you are safe and professional why shouldnt they give the lad a prompt, my examiner did, i got the final question which was something like “what would you check before a shift” well the simple answer to that is EVERYTHING i missed quite a crucial answer to the point where he said, “your driving along and a kid steps out in front of you, what u gonna do??” and just like that i said slam the anchors on and sound the horn and the horn was what he was looking for.
hi ive got my case studies soon as was just wondering how they work and what studying i can do would be helpfull if anyone knew of some where to find practice questions ive read the drivers cpc book, got the guide to driving goods vehicles and also downloaded the drivers cpc leaflet. What sort of things do you get asked on the mod 4 test, also when i spoke to my training about getting my mod 2 booked they said i do it after my training was just wondering if that is normal i am correct in thinking that my training will include some classroom work towards the cpc should be finally starting my driver training a week on monday been waiting ages but i cant complain to much as the training company has had to wait to make sure all my funding is ok

Has your training provider told you what you they are going to do to get you through the CPC?
There are some training providers that are doing nothing for their trainees for the CPC. They will get you your licence then say sort your own CPC because we do not do it!

If anyone has such a training provider then do not panic - many other providers will take you on for the initial Dcpc on it’s own - the Initial Dcpc does not have to be done with the provider who did your on-road practical training.
Very little training, if any, needs to be done for Module 2 Initial Dcpc as most of it is in the books and needs a degree of common sense.
The mod 4 is very different and without training would be near on impossible to pass IMO.
The above is similar to Mod 1 theory and Mod 3 practical - theory can be done by reading books and practising the HPT but mod 3 would be virtually impossible without training.
In my opinion 2 hours training is adequate for cpc mod 4.
In the 2hours I concentrate on the securing devices and daily checks.
It is impossible to cover every question that the examiners could ask. Also the student wont remember it all.
Common sense is needed every question.
I know my training provider is going to book it for me and all they have said is there is a some stuff that i have to read im out with my instructor a week on monday so will give me a chance to properley find out what happens. What have the people you have had pass the case studies test said about it is it like the theory and pretty much common sense i know they are not all multi choice answers though. I been waiting so long for this i just want to be as prepared as i can so i have the best chance to pass everything 1st time 1 thing my instructor did say on my assesment is that i will require a 10 day course but it will be approx 7 days driving depending on how it goes so im persuming the other days will be spent in the classroom towards the cpc i wish i had these questions in my head at the time but i concentrated so hard on my driving and begineers nerves made me forget all the bloody things i wanted to ask at the time.
Thanks for the replies and you links helped very much rog

that does not make sense

No way !! - a few hours max will do for module 4
Big Brummie Macca:

I think you will find they are all multiple choice just like the module 1a theory.
I would ask for an exact breakdown on what you will be doing during those 10 days
i read in the cpc book that some questions will require a written entry on the mod 2, but if they are multi choice all the better are they basically common sense. I cant remember his exact words as to be honest i was chuffed to bits that i had finally got to do my assemsment and all went very very well, i can remenber him saying thats one of the best assesment drives i had in a while maybe just a instructors way of confidence building but i was very happy. Maybe i have it wrong or miss understood what he ment about the 7 day bit I will be going with the questions fresh in my mind and make sure i ask them before we start. Is it usual that you do the training and then mod 2 though i know it is definatly been booked by them as it has been mentioned and the organisation that is ( not training company but who i have got funding with) has told me that my cpc is included.
Hello,
We agree with Rog and Elmet, two hours is adequate for the CPC Module 4, and as others have said the CPC Module 2, just reading the book and common sense, most of the books and DVD’s for all the theory/hazard tests can be hired out from most local libraries to save buying them, as we always tell our trainiees.
Big Brummie Macca:

Can be either way as the only rules are -
Mods 1a & 1b must be passed before mod 3 - that’s the licence bit to drive the LGV
Mod 2 must be passed before mod 4 - that’s the Dcpc bit to drive the LGV commercially
don’t forget -
You need your licence for the DSA mod 4 test
if you have not done your DSA mod 4 test when passing mod 3 and you give it to the examiner to deal with then you will have to wait for it to be returned to you from DVLA before you can take mod 4
If you pass mod 3 and keep the licence for mod 4 then you will have to send it to DVLA for the cat C to be put on it as the examiner can only deal with that at the end of the mod 3 test and at no other time.
The DVLA does not need the licence for a mod 4 pass and DQC to be issued as the DSA inform the DVLA electronically
