Second man or second quality? Another troll post…
Ancient history request time.
In the late 60’s and into the 70’s, there was a firm based in the Crackington area, Ken Horwell. It was livestock and flats. My dear old Dad used to drive their Atkinson when it was new. He remained proud of his time on the road right up to the end. If anyone has pictures of them and can provide me with one, I would be really, really grateful. I think they packed up in 77 or 78 when Ken died. Rayluv, this may even have been the firm you allegedly saw, but these guys were quality guys so you would never have appreciated it.
Also, any pics of Aldridges 143s when Jimmy Scott was their head nutter would be appreciated. Does anyone know who Jim is working for now?
The ERF 4 wheeler behind L P Stephens & Sons Scania, looks very much like an ex Thamesdown Glass Recycling of Cricklade Swindon, just had the new owners name put on it. Thamesdown replaced it with a new 6 legger DAF.

That used to happen a lot, didn’t it? I upset some retired Colonel in Tresparret once while I was tipping fertiliser. He insisted he had to get through, and since he was a trifle portly, I asked if he was pregnant…The boss had a phone call about that one…
Wasn’t Dave Clarkes Merc a hi rise?
Are there any pics of George Clarkes Merc about by any chance? He ran out of Five Lanes. I am trying to get some pics of Sillifants gear among others. They may not be top notch pics but I am working on it anyway. That Block lorry of theirs must have been the one Merv was driving when the big bust up occurred.
my father drove that block lorry from new (not merv)(it replaced the green 200) he did most of the flat bed work there for years, the lorry was sold to the council, and the crane went to r+o as a rear mount, then to bodmin blocks. It came with block grab, pallet forks, and log grab for loading thousands of fencing stakes, the boys only drove it sundays for loading bangers. (up till the bust up i can only remember 3 flat beds, but only have photo’s of these 2.

St. Austell race-way?
Hi all;does anyone on here remember jasper, he usedto drive for chris miners in the seventies. tosay he was a larger than life character, was a understatement!!! spent many anight out with him in the greyhound inn, near millbay docks plymouth!
Seeing the pics of the ECC/Heavy Haulage fleet reminds me of those misspent summers sat on the docks at Charlestown when I was supposed to be ‘studying’ at 6th form sitting on the harbour wall watching the boats being unloaded into the tipper fleets of Hoopers of St Austell and Goonvean & Rostowrack China Clay Co. G+V had two new (C) plate Scammell Constructors and Hoopers had a mixed fleet but the one which sticks out was an X plate Scammell Routeman driven by a guy who obviously appreciated the howling sound effects from the Scammell - he would use every gear coming down the hill into the docks and then give a little thumbs up as he went past - happy days (but not the right thing to do according to my College Tutor!!!)
Reeeeaaal long shot but anyone got any pics of Keith Courts pair of DAF’s? He used to keep them up at our place for a while, he had a 2800 Artic and and a two axle flatbed rigid - either a 1600 or a 2100 - I think the rigid went down to West Cornwall or someone similar down West - actually might have been Moor Street Garage.

There was a DAF 4wheeler flat owned by Mike Richards Haulage which went on to be West Cornwall Storage and Distribution.
I have got some of Mikes photos on loan at the moment and there is one of his fleet in the mid 80’s including the Daf.
It isn’t the best of photos and i can’t make out the reg plate but this could be the one you’re looking for.
It’s in Mikes later colours of green and red.
Seeing mention of NJ Grose of St Austell, I seem to recall back in the mid 80’s a WH Grose also of St Austell who I believe was either the brother or cousin of NJ also ran a couple of motors. Both of their liveries were the same style of lettering and stripes but WH’s motors were a nice shade of two tone red. I can only ever remember two wagons, a SedAk 401 and a Foden.

I think they had more wagons than that for sure, but yes they were related, I forget how. If I’m not mistaken they were my Great Grandads second cousins. Bizzarely my Great Grandads brother was the first road accident victim locally when he was run over by a steam engine from St Austell that was delivering to our village.
Hi ghinzani
Which village would that be then?
Ref WH Grose, never found out where his yard was but the wagons always seemed to be starting out from Robartes Place housing estate when I would walk through en route to school. I see that the NJ Grose Atki Borderer is/was up for sale in the Classic Mag.

Nicks yard was next to CTT in Bethel, just across from the Social club. Used to love staring out the window at CTT at his fleet. Good times!
Yep, even though I cant remember WH’s place I remember NJ’s yard very well, and remember asking him for any sort of job when i was leaving school. This would have been when he was starting to wind the business down and he told me he didnt want to give me a job only for it to end shortly afterwards - honesty and fairness through and through. Went to see Tim Lobb in Grampound last time I was home visiting, he is the chap who owns the ex NJ Grose Borderer and the Bedford and he showed me a collection of photos not only of the restoration of these vehicles but also others in the NJ fleet. Beleive he too was related to the Grose family.
