hiya,
Never knew where Sharrock’s was located but i well remember that motor used to see it knocking about Rochdale I was driving an ERF with a very similar reg and that one certainly stood out they always kept a tidy fleet and there seemed to be quite a few of them.

Hi John,I remember Crabtrees but the Globe Industrial Estate I remember as well. There was a bakery on there called Globe Bakeries and they made “oven bottom muffins”.Littlewoods had a big order for them and we (Glass Glover) used to pick them up on nights,we had a key and loaded ourselves, nearly always a 48 cage load on a wagon and drag.In and out in less than an hour - with a cab full courtesy of the bakery.

Worked with a fella at Henry Johnsons around 76/77, Harry Jones, who went on to work direct for Manro Chems; think his dad or father-in-law worked there and got him the start   Last time I saw him he was in a new F10 and was loving the job :exclamation: :exclamation: Must have been very early 80’s

Dave Penn;

Hi Dave.
Lewis tankers do all the work these days out of what was Manro @ Stalybridge. For the life of me can’t remember the name they go under now.

Stanfield:
Hi Chris.I am not to sure about that but they are definately from Glossop and the factory they do their work out of is the foam place at Dinting glossop the vehicles are there own fleet.Kay Metzeler was taken over in 1987 by British Vita.Carpenters are quite a big outfit in America & Canada

Carpenters bought Draka foam from Glossop and they still work from the same factory at dinting

Regarding H Crabtree from New Mills, does anyone remember a guy called Harry Topliff who drove for them. He was my mums cousins husband, a great guy who sadly passed away many years ago now. I think he drove for them in the 70’s

Regards
Paul

J&T SHARROCKS of Rochdale does anyone remember whereabouts they were in the Rochdale area.

A bit of info on J&T Sharrocks from their grandson David Taylor
The company was started after WW1 by brothers John & Tom and remained in the family in later years with Derek-Tom & William Sharrocks until they retired and sold out to Baileys of Westbury in the late 70s early 80s.They were originally based at Falinge Rd Rochdale but later moved to larger premises on the corner of Bentley Street & Shawclough Road in the late 60s.
The two brothers started off by selling firewood from an handcart and then eventually invested in a horse, they were then able to move into furniture removals and light haulage.Next step was wagons (HGV) moving goods from the mills around the Rochdale area to Liverpool docks this at the time was a major contract for the firm.Davids father became Transport Manager in the 60s but like most family owned companys he also did a fair amount of driving to help out.
This info was supplied by grandson DAVID TAYLOR

Hi Harry.I dont think it would be G Dews all there motors were painted in a maroon livery and were also signwritten.Dews in the 60s also had quite a large fleet of Thames Trader tippers which they ran from a quarry they owned over in Buckton Vale Stalybridge they were a very big outfit at one time and they still exist today has cival engineers but do not have any of there own transport these days.It could have been Quegans from Oldham.
JOHN

hiya,
Thanks John that seems to rule Dews out the firm I did the one off for was a bit on the higgledy piggledy side all i can really remember is there was odds and sods of plant lying about and there seemed to be little uniformity in the colour scheme the very old Scammell i used was dark blue a la Pickfords, it would pull a house down but was it slow it was a good thing i was on a two week break from my then company to do the job and get over doing the job, the two second men i used and needed were both general haulage four wheeler drivers so did’nt have a clue what they was getting into, the loading transporting tipping took about 8 days and the helpers was both local drivers and had never stayed in digs before so as well as doing my job i had to wipe a few tears away as well.

Hi Harry and John, going back to the sixties I seem to remember a plant hire company called Pecks, it could of been called Richard Pecks I am not sure, does that name ring a bell with anyone or does anybody know where abouts in the area they were from ?.
I am surprised that Foden 46 has not seen this post as he has been driving low loaders in that area since the early seventies  .

Hi mushroomman
J H Pecks were based at Ardwick just of Hyde Rd behind a company what used to make eccles cakes, they ran a few TK Bedfords and Albion Reivers mainly on demolition work, they were also marroon in colour.I dont remember what happened to them (did they just close down or were they taken over ?).There are a couple of photos on Tipits Sherrans & other Manchester companys thread.)
JOHN

Hi Stansfield J H Pecks moved from ardwick to featherstall road in oldham .Rochdale rd end .they were there only a couple of years then closed down. The site is now a builders merchants They also had a foden low loader, is that the one Harry drove ? Regards foden 46

tried to buy a slide off ebay of a foden half cab of pecks but the fella just kept bidding shame we cud’nt have shared it

hiya,
Only ever drove a Foden once it was one of Robinson’s of Stockton for a distance of a hundred yards or so, that was off the dock with the drivers permission to get my motor on it was one of those half shed things and i was’nt impressed the motor i drove for the Oldham outfit was i’m fairly certain an ex-services Scammell tank dragger but we are talking about 45 years ago, i can clearly remember the clips on the back of the cab which was for holding the old 303 rifle i used them to hang my old greatcoat on.
