Companys from North Manchester in the 70's

Hi everyone.Has any of you lads out there got anything about Broadhurst Transport from Staylbridge.

Hiya John, This is the only photo I’ve come across of one of Broadhurst’s. I think it was a Broadhurst Atki unit heading over too Trafford Park for a trailer around 5am one summers morning, that crashed through the barrier of the flyover section of the Mancunian Way back in '89 - '91 killing the driver.

anyone no anything or have any pictures of what was i think called astor wax in failsworth which where behind what was the halfway house house on oldham road

Astor Technical waxes, Pickfords/Tankfreight had an F88 (iirc) on the job, a nice paintjob, driver from the borders called Ivan, top driver. I remember in the 5 years he was on the job we never had to re-line the brakes, did’nt use them as he said they slowed you down to quick !! Unfortunately no pictures though

sniffy when you refurbished that manros tanker where you at a company just off featherstall rd in oldham

Lee mat, i worked for Pickfords/Tankfreight on Barton dock road in T/Park. We had a paintshop as well as the workshop so we used to maintain and refurbish kit for loads of companies around Manchester. We used to refurbish quite a few of the smaller chemical companies tanks, just wish I’d photographed more. The Manro trailer was in the Tankfreight livery, changing the TF for Manro but not sure if there were any more painted in the same colours or who actually pulled the trailers - Did Manro have their own tractors ?

Because we were on Barton dock we used to maintain quite a few trucks operating from the container base, loads of owner drivers as well as some of the bigger companies. Don Bryce, Geoff Moody, Broadhurst from Stalybridge, Fitzfield freight, Ralph Perch, to name a few, along with all the tank haulage firms

yes they had there own kit they owned there own units and trailers its a big company quite well known i thought that a company off featherstall road think it was called trailer services did that trailer but they may of just maintained them .

I remember Trailer Services they did a few tanks forTownson/ Sadler during the 70’s/ 80s.Fitting extra axles making them into tri’s etc. There yard is still there but dont know who’s in it these days.

There used to be a trailer builder in Oldham or in that area? called Buckstone Motor Bodies, they built a lot of fridges and I went there a couple of times to pick one up for Glass Glover Distribution.Anybody remember them,it might have been Chadderton come to think of it :unamused:

We had 4 or 5 F plate complete outfits on hire from Buckstones around 89/92 ,FL10 Units with their own build twin axle trailers painted white with no name. They were very well maintained and the Mechanic who came in most nights to do minor jobs could’nt have been more helpful,he did say that he thought they would’nt be replaced but I now recall a sister company running some of theirs till the transport side ceased in 1995. I do have picture of one but have no idea how to put them on or where it is, but that does remind me that I waited till a Kraut reg. MAN wagon and drag with a Bussing type side mounted engine moved from alongside instead of photographing that as well.

Hi V8 Passion
Thanks for the reply It is nice to know Highfield Haulage are still going strong. We had some good times together in the seventies.

Here are another couple of photos we have found.

We had stoped by a lake to wash the trucks after tipping steel at Bonneville near the French side of the Mt Blanc Tunnel and on route to Montpellier to load apples.

Freddy on the left, my father on the right at a services in the south of France.

Regards Keith.

fantastic photos - i’ve subconsciously avoided this thread (must be being from RIGHT side of the pennines what caused it  ) and only found your photos while doing an unrelated google image search!

I asked ages ago about Highfield with limited response, although Fred’s old protege Brian is a member on here and we exchanged PMs

Fred (or Eric, Steve or any of the drivers!) was no angel, but a proper bloke and a gentlemen - he subbed for the firm where I worked on leaving school and it was a pleasure to have known and worked with them all, even Garry Kelly the scouser :grimacing: that was mid to late 80s when they had about 6 motors, all painted metallic turquoise with yellow signwriting and well kept

the other lads from that era were peter the german (the red baron), bernard who died in a crash near reims about 1988, derek the brummie from skem (the word lugubrious was made for del but he was dryly hilarious) , ken parry (less said the better!) plus others I can’t recall at the moment

John,do you have any more of butterworth’s in greenfield.I remember them they used to be down a small road and on the corner there used to be a cycle repair shop and the trucks were burgundy with gold signwriting.I grew up in greenfield and saw their trucks quite often and at the time i remember they ran Leyland mammoths.

Cheers Paul…that picture certainly brings back some memory’s and i thought i remembered a fuel pump on the pavement but wasn’t 100% sure.Fantastic, thanks mate

Al

Paul just been on your site and the Barretts pics really bring back the memory’s.I especially like the older pics of when they had there yard in greenfield as i used to pass there at around 6-30 every morning as a kid doing my paper round…the wagons would be just starting up and you could smell the diesel fumes from afar and hardly see anything…Cheers mate.

Al.This is the only one I can find for you of the A&J Butterworth fleet.X reg Scania 114L 340.
John

Are they still in the same place or have they moved(or are they still going maybe should have been the question)?

Al

Hi Al.
No they closed down I think around 2006 but the fuel pump and shop are still there on the roadside. The yard is now just a plot of land with nothing their.
