Hi Cattle Wagon Man
The photo of UTD 823 takes me back a bit. It was a 4 cylinder Chieftain, it was a great slugger, and stopped at nothing. I drove it part-time all the time he had it, probably about five years, mainly nights, and Sundays. It was a heavy body, and would often be overloaded, like most wagons at that time. It was sold to either George Bargh, or Ernie Kidd I can’t remember which, and ended its days when the chassis broke in two. Before the Albion Tommy had an under floor petrol Commer (if you could find a photo of that it would it be good). It was at the time of the Suisse crisis, and the price of fuel shot up, and it was costing a fortune to run, so it had to go.

Regards Dalesman
P.S. I have some photos of a two deck cattle trailer in canada which had a misshap, but perhaps this is not the site to post them.

Hi Dalesman,
Thanks for the additional information about the Albion. I didn`t know that you had driven it.

Id ask Ernie about the Albion ,.....but hes now living abroad in retirement, and sadly George died a couple of years ago.
John Harvey passed away at the end of last year, and he would have remembered the Albions later owner, and explained the story about the unfortunate backbone` collapse. :frowning:

Eric told me that the petrol-engined Commer was very thirsty, so it was sold reasonably quickly.
Ill ask Eric if hes found any more old photographs , - do you have any at all, please ?

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Hi Cattle Wagon Man
Ernie was over in this country a few weeks ago, my sister-in-law was talking to him in Sainsbury’s or Asda. He told her he had sold his motor-home, and bought an apartment over there. I have no old photos at all, never stopped long enough to take one. I had one of Tommy & Rex the dog standing by DEC 281D not taken by me, I gave a copy to Eric. Yes I drove for Tommy a long time starting with the Commer, when I was about 18, (It was under 3 tons just?). I had ridden round with him as a kid in the Seddon.
Regards Dalesman

Hi Gloves, I’m loving the photos you are posting of trucks based in Settle, Hellifield and the surrounding area. Thank you so much.

You didn’t happen to take any photos of cattle wagons parked up at Hellifield Auction did you, or perhaps trucks based at Gallaber Farm (Hellifield)?

Kind regards
Simon

Sorry no to the livestock trucks, only the Scania I posted earlier in Cowan Bridge.

Did however photo trucks in and around Hellifield and a farm I know only as ‘Winders’ Farm if that is the correct spelling■■? Used to be first left after the layby after Townsons, (Derek Woffenden). I tended to specialise in tippers, mixers or anything with hiabs.

So tippers from the late 80’s ok.

Thanks for all the recent photographs and comments. They bring back some memories.

The R. & R. Newhouse Scania 82 , reg. no. SET 977 Y :… - I think it was later sold to a Sedbergh hay & straw
supplier named Steve Hayhurst. He ran the Scania with a drawbar trailer , until he closed the business in the mid. 1990s. Sorry , no photos , but Ill ask around.

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Thanks for the info Barry and the photos you have already posted (top draw).

We are talking about the same farm (Gallaber/Winders), so if you do get chance to post any photos you took of any wagons (i.e. Derek’s or Alan’s) down at the farm I’d be really made up.

Thank you.

Simon

The AEC Marshall belonging to Fred Mattinson used to be driven by Bob Newhouse, it was replaced in 1983 with a Leyland Constructor wagon+drag.
He used to bring straw and fertiliser to us at Wray, and was spotted cleaning his house windows in Long Preston last week…

Thanks to Wrighty for the info. : re: A.E.C. Marshal. Any photographs/contributions are most welcome.

Continiung with the the T. Staveley & Son fleet , heres KHG 74 N , a Leyland Lynx , bought new in the summer of 1975. The cattle container was transferred from GJM 795 G , with slight alterations made to the depth of the luton to accommodate the higher-mounted cab. I do not think the Lynx did not have the 500 Series` ( headless wonder/blunder ) , but " Dalesman " will be able to name the installed engine. I am sure a powerful non-standard engine was fitted .

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

A little bit of nostalga for the Settle/ Ingleton area TNUK members, and also for others who will remember this firm.

The company name of `XL Granite ( Ingleton ) Ltd. disappeared many years ago, but the quarry is still thriving.

This A.E.C. Marshall tipper was featured in an advertisment in 1969.
The tipper body builders were Cravens Homalloy , from Preston.
According to the advert, the " framed fixed sided tipping body measured 20 00" long , x 7 9" wide, and with
2 3" deep sides and ends. The A.E.C.s wheelbase is 15` 10" . "

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Hi Cattle Wagon Man

It was good to see your latest photo of Tommy’s wagon, KHG 74N.
Sorry I can’t help with much information after the Albion Super Clydesdale, it was the last one I drove for him, as Eric had past his test and started working for his dad.
I did have a ride with him in the Leyland Super Comet when new, and I think it had two gear sticks. The Leyland Lynx KHG 74N probably had the “headless wonder”
Eric will be able to tell you more than me.

Wrighty’s post on Fred Mattinson & Bob Newhouse reminds me that Bob always had the tidiest loads of straw.

Regards Dalesman

Bob once brought us a load of straw and as he climbed up the load he said “don’t think you`ll want this, its a bit heavy” and sure enough the first bale it the floor and it didn’t even bounce… so he ended up taking it away.
Its a miracle he never had one on fire as the pipe was always well stoked…

Several photos for you, taken at Gallaber Farm or in Hellifield, the Volvo F12 had very fine airbrushing on the cab, but impossible to see on the photo. I would not normally have photo’d the Volvo as it usually ran with a fridge/freezer trailer to Spain, but on this particular visit to the Farm Allan had the tipper trailer on. He was off to Peterborough Truckfest and managed to get a load to help pay for the trip rather than running empty!
