Companies from towns&villages along A65 Skipton to Kendal

Cheers malc I work for m e Saunders will be over there again tomorrow try before they shut the dam road again!

Another livestock haulier on the A 65 road-edge , is the family-run R.E. Shuttleworth & Sons of Cowan Bridge.
Here is Andrew`s Scania and drawbar trailer , ready to leave home for collecting cattle at Bentham Auction.

This Scania must be one of the tidiest S reg. on the roads. With the sun shining on the wrong side ,
the photograph does not do justice to the well-kept outfit.

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

A close-up from the otherside, whilst standing on a grass bank.

She’s certainly is cattle wagon man.
Andrew certainly makes light work of reversing that A Frame Turntable Drawbar at auctions - can’t be easy.
Cheers

Tommy Staveleys Leyland Comet, parked outside Maythorne his home, alongside the A 65 in Ingleton. GEC 992 was new in 1960, and would be fitted with a (then) maximum-length (22) and capacity livestock body
with a folding 3 rd. deck . Fox of Lancaster built this solid, but heavy, body.

Tommy`s son Eric has kindly allowed me to display these photographs on TNUK.

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Hi Folks,
A bit dusty sent to me .

Cheers Malc.

In 1969 , this Leyland Super Comet, reg. no. GJM 795 G, replaced the Albion Super Clydesdale for Ingleton
livestock hauliers Tommy & Eric Staveley. The Leyland was fitted with the “two-stick” splitter gearbox.

A new and larger Williams 3 deck livestock container , shown here, was bought in 1973.

Photographed leaving Sedbergh Auction Mart, loaded with sheep , one Friday evening around 1974.

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Hi Cattle Wagon Man
I drove GEC 992 from new, first-part-time, then full-time for two years. It was a great step forward from the old Albion
Cheiftiain, it had a radio; It was a good motor, but the brakes were not up to much. S J Bargh garage at Caton said they
could improve them, so they fitted a hydrovac to help the servo, it did. On the next day returning from Penrith I was
slowing down to go through Claphan (this was long before the bypass) and I no foot brake, I managed to stop with the
hand brake, the extra presure had ruptsured a brake pipe where it had worn thin on a chassis cross member, so it would
have gone soon anyway. Good job it didn’t go coming down Shap. Thanks for putting the photo on.
Regards Dalesman

One to add to the theme, photographed 1983 in Cowan Bridge.

I have been taking photos of trucks and plant since about 1980, but particularly tippers in and around the North. Spent quite a while recently, showing some of the results to the lads at Blue Line, bringing back a few memories.

Time allowing, I will post some more if ok by you all to do so, using the A65 theme.

PS Still have not met with Andrew, ex of Settle, the famed Dales truck photographer, but still time. Occasionally bump into Nigel from Settle Dairy though, another keen driver/photographer.

In about 72 or 73 the farm I worked on used the services of John Harvey? from gressingham ,would this be the scania he had

Hi jackslad,
No, the R.E, Shuttleworth & Sons Scania bears a Carlisle reg. no. and is newer than John Harveys.

John bought his brand new Scania 80 around 1971/2. At the time , everyone said hed paid far too much money for " summat foreign" , and that hed never recoup the money!
He proved them wrong , as the Scania worked without any problems until his retirement in 1989. That 4 wheeler was never overworked, and was very well cared-for, - maybe no-one other than John ever drove it.
I am sorry that I havent a photograph of Johns Scania to put on here.

I think Alan Thompson ( Haulage) , of nearby Carnforth , bought it , but I can not remember if he continued to run it
alongside with his own Scanias.

I hope this is of help to you.

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Hi Barry,
I was at blue line that day i was last to look at some of your extensive collection.
I used to work at Howarth Bros but they sold their tippers in early seventies, please
put as many photos as you can on this site.

Cheers Malc.

Hi Folks,
Just got this photo from mate Rob Taylor to start this topic. It was ex M.R.Clark Kirkgunzeon Dumfries.
They were based at masongill nr Ingleton. Keep the photos and stories flowing.

SNAP

Every time I open this site, page 1 reminds me to find a put up my photo taken in 1984 at roadside in Ingleton.

Seddon Atkinson of Taylor & Metcalfe in Bentham, 1985.

Seddon Atkinson with powder tanker, old truck park/auction area, Hellifield 1986, unsure if it was owned and driven by Melvyn Clegg, possibly working with Dawsons, but no doubt you or others will put me right.

IIRC GEC 7N would have been an ex James Cropper & Co Paper makers,of Burneside,Kendal, Seddon,it would have had the RR220 engine and the DB 6:600 gearbox.Cheers Bewick.PS I wonder if they bought the Seddon off Jack Greenwood from Hardman Bros.of Walton-le-Dale,and there lies another tale about dodgy salesmen !

Going back in time to the 1950`s , Tommy Staveley owned this Albion ( Chieftain ? ).
The sturdy, but heavy , livestock body was built by Fox of Lancaster.

Photographed outside Tommys home , Maythorne` , Ingleton.

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Hi Cattle Wagon Man
The photo of UTD 823 takes me back a bit. It was a 4 cylinder Chieftain, it was a great slugger, and stopped at nothing. I drove it part-time all the time he had it, probably about five years, mainly nights, and Sundays. It was a heavy body, and would often be overloaded, like most wagons at that time. It was sold to either George Bargh, or Ernie Kidd I can’t remember which, and ended its days when the chassis broke in two. Before the Albion Tommy had an under floor petrol Commer (if you could find a photo of that it would it be good). It was at the time of the Suisse crisis, and the price of fuel shot up, and it was costing a fortune to run, so it had to go.

Regards Dalesman
P.S. I have some photos of a two deck cattle trailer in canada which had a misshap, but perhaps this is not the site to post them.
