Class one supermarket work

Iv’e done Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s,both good work if you get your class1,also done Iceland, would not recommend them at all, real hard graft, nearly lost a trolley off the back one day because it’s coming from the trailer all frozen, soon as it hit the tailift it just slid, not worth the hassle

Was that through agency?

yes it was, still not too bad though

Supermarket work…

Pros - Not for profit so generally superior T&C’s to most of the rest of the industry, usually attractive looking hourly rates, sensible number of hours, clean, decent pension schemes.

Cons - Unsociable hours, naff shift patterns involving weekends, bank hols ignored, no thinking for yourself allowed, tons of daft rules.

Every truck driving job comes with compromises, just got to decide what you want to compromise on.

I reckon Tesco Fradley Park would be your best chance for a start, always got posters up.

Are you unaware the speed limit has gone up to 50mph?

If so, there maybe a place for you.

There’s at least 3 ways to do that, all of which are easy, if you think that would be a “challenging” place you must have it easy.

A.

Having not done it or been in the yard it’s a different thing to driving past, but the quick look driving past doesn’t look much room, last time there was a container by the wall.

A container by the wall?! :open_mouth:

Face it, the place isn’t challenging and you monged it up by using it as an example.

Class 1 supermarket work is ace. You get to heave away at overloaded cages with knackered wheels and if you are really lucky you get a pump truck to drag overloaded pallets onto your tail lift to spin round without falling off.

The wagons are all top of the range with aircon, fridges and microwaves and the start times and days are fantastic. Mon-Fri 8am starts is the norm.

Pay is astronomical and you will never work weekends and bank holidays and start before 7am.

(Only kidding folks…it’s absolute w@nk) :bulb:

You missed off the 6 months full sick pay at average hours, the 16 lieu days I accumulated last year plus all the annual leave again at average pay, the in house gym, the full on canteen open 24/7, showers, share save, pension etc etc.

And what’s all this tipping on a tail lift with a pallet truck about ■■

Beaver you were in the wrong supermarket by sounds of it. The one where I work (backdoor not driving yet) if the wheels are knackered the driver just leaves me to get a pallet truck or restack it. “Health and safety” etc. If I want the stock I will sort it.

To be fair they all moan about the office staff, anti social hours and all the rules but all agree it is the easiest job for the money they have done. Also whilst the rules are a pain they can also be used against them when suits

Iceland mate :frowning:

No wonder you don’t like supermarket work then !

That’s about 14 mile trip from me according to Google maps, so that’ll suit me it’s only few miles more than I usually drive.

I’m used to weekends and bank hols so that won’t affect me too much, it’s got to be better than what I’m doing now - when I get home I’m completely wiped out :open_mouth:

If your struggling with bags of laundry (and I’m not suggesting that’s easy btw) why would you want to do supermarket work?
As mentioned earlier, the cages very rarely have all their wheels and if they do, they all want to go in different directions. And those cages are stacked to overflowing with booze & pop. Then you get the pallets of flour or cases of beer. Really not easy, especially when trying to get them onto a tail lift for the stores without bays! And that’s after you’ve moved the hundreds of packs of loo rolls which have just been chucked on top of all the cages the full length of the trailer. Once you’ve unloaded that lot, then you have to reload all the empty cages the store is sending back. Again, with those wheels, not easy.
Really not an easier alternative imo.
As suggested before, go to an agency, take anything, try everything, and hopefully you might find something better.
Good luck!

Lidl at j9m6 is thro Drivers Direct only no permanent drivers,

Compass Haulage were advertising for drivers for Lidl a few weeks ago. Still not employed by Lidl but at least no agency involved. Loads of subbies in there if you know where to look.

agree with nightlord. a good alternative would be freightliner landor st. sign on with pertemps their preferred agency and they accept new passes.

I can imagine it’s not a walk in the park, I just can’t imagine it’s worse than what I’m currently doing (at least most days) the laundry bags go upstairs in most hotels which makes it a right pain, and our cages too are crap!

And I’m fed up of doing a drop, just to drive a mile down the road to do another and so on, I’d like to be driving more…

But point taken, maybe I’m underestimating it a little, suppose I’ve got to give it a whirl and see. Cheers

That’s just up the road from where I work, I’ll keep in mind cheers

Have you thought about trunking for the parcel firms like TNT, Parcel Farce or Hermes? One hit trunking, stick it on a bay, drop and swap and back to yard. Easiest money you’ll ever earn, albeit not in large amounts. They all have hubs in the Midlands.

^^^ Good advice from Cavey. I run a decker into DX at Willenhall 2/3 times a week. You could always try them.

That’s changed over the last 20 odd years when I used to do some odd weeks outta Botley…pull up outside, wheel cages into back door, reload empties, drive to next store! It was that easy, I’d ask to go back…better than Swifts of Bicester…they delivered the Coca Cola vending machines…and that meant getting the bloody thing to wherever one needed replacing…ground floor or whatever floor, that was the contract…had an electric sack barrow with ‘walk it upstair’ wheels!

Usually on Saturday afternoon mate. You see, sky doesn’t mug off proper fans in favour of the armchair ones in the lower leagues.

I am a little disappointed though, with Newcastle going up, that would have been an easy 6 points next season. :grimacing:
