winding Ron up is not a good idea was a half descent boxer in his younger days . does he still do the poem type storeys about company life? and bloody whistle all the time .lol a very nice bloke is Mr green

I know about his boxing past, think his brother was better than him from what I heard, didnt know about the poems and he doesnt whistle that much now,(might have lost some teeth …lol).
I do know from experience not to try and keep up with him pint for pint in the pub

As for winding him up we all do it all the time, he knows its not malicious and we get it back the same, as you say a very nice bloke and a true salt of the earth.

Does anyone know anything about Woodwards (Macclesfield)? In the early 70s, J Haydons (Biddulph) bought at least 6 ERFs with Gardners off them that were 2 or 3 years old. They all had a 13 in the reg - I was told that all their wagons then had a 13 in the reg.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Hiya Gardner 120. in the 70,s gordon plant sold all his fleet and most of them was 4 wheeler ERF,s with gardner engines.all of them was in really good
condition.i was woundering if by chance their was a mix up with names as woodwards seemed to run 6 and 8 legger ridgids. it may be me who,s wrong
but no one has mentioned woodwards 4 wheelers. on the last page of stoke on trent companys there,s a 6 legger in need of restoration that was new to
woodwards in 1965.
John

Hi there John. Thanks for your response - we did buy a 6 legger ELG 13H from Woodwards but there were also at least 4 Gardner 120 4-wheelers and a 5 pot (Gardner 100) from Woodwards too - YMB 313J, SMA 13H, NMB 513G, LMB 413J and JTU 513G.

Ouch! It’s scary that I can remember those number plates from 1978 …

FODENMAN:
Hi Lostock Pete, I remember Pete Hanby when I used to work for North West Truck Engineering Co,to give it its full title used back in those days.I started working for them at what was a relatively new, Stoke-on-Trent depot,up until its closure in around 1987/88.If I’m correct. I remember that only a few weeks before we’d sold our first Daf 95 to Ed Weetman.

In later years I worked at the Lostock depot.I seem to think that a very pretty girl in the parts office was Pete’s daughter?
Can’t remember her name, maybe Sue?, but I can still picture her.
I found the Barrow family to be about the straightest employers that I’ve ever worked for. They expected their pound of flesh just like anyone else, but if your wages were short one week through their mistake they’d tell you before you even realised and it would always be put right again the next week without having to remind anyone. Can’t say that about many these days!.

In those days I worked very hard and very long hours, but they were some of the most enjoyable times ever. The old NWT team were a great bunch to work with in those days.
I personally remember Pete as a really likable, easy to get on with chap. A true gent.
Best regards,
John.

Hi there fodenman thats right that pretty little girl is my sister and her name is jennifer. Now married and still living in northwich. Dad retired at Barrows and worked at Morrisons warehouse for a short while before retiring completely and just before christmas celebrated his 75th birthday and still going strong. Whats your name so can tell dad was talking to you? anyway other firms in northwich included J CAFFERY ,since taken over Brady Transport ,also Sadler Transport working out of new cheshire salt works. I also seem to remember K&L FREIGHT started by two fitters from NWTE (martin kidd & andy leather) dont know if you remember them ?

Hi Lostockmike, Good to hear from you. I thought I was correct about your sister. I hope she’s keeping well, in fact please pass on my regards to them both, there’s actually more chance of your sister remembering me than dad remembering.I the days when Jennifer was there I was the Daf parts Rep at the relatively new Stoke branch and hopefully she’ll remember me coming in to fetch stock orders or urgent items for the Stoke branch in a type of vehicle not often see on the roads these days, a Talbot Express, long wheelbase, high-top van, those were the days lol. A few years after the \Stoke branch closed I returned to work at the Lostock branch which by that time was the Leyland Daf dealership. Sorry, nearly forgot to tell you, My name is John Salisbury. I do remember Andy Leather, but didn’t know of that company being formed though.
Good to hear from you.

Regards, John.
PS can’t believe that your dad is that age, how time flies.

Hi Bob

I am Eric Dawson’s daughter-in-law, writing on behalf of his son, Peter. We were messing on the internet when we were bored on holiday and accidentally came across this post so had to join to reply. Peter says to tell you his dad was mortified to find out he was dead - fraid he is alive and kicking still! and driving us all potty. Peter also said to say if this is Bob Cannell you’ve got it wrong again.

Also says his colours were red / white / blue.

I won’t go on this website again so if you reply, reply to either lynn@pln.co.uk.

Bye

Wow there were loads of Cheshire operators (sadly mostly gone now) but does anyone remember Thomasons from Northwich - ran quite a big fridge fleet and I think they had their own cold store. Some pics would be good anyone?

I remember them they used to deliver meat to Ponteland Ind Est, years ago blue & white motors if my memmory is correct, one of their drivers used to get into the local working mens social club, sorry no photos. Regards Larry.

my dad worked at thomasons between 84 /86,there pic’s are on here, just type in thomasons northwich .

HI THERE GAZ. SEEM TO REMEMBER THAT THOMASONS WAS ALSO THE SAVIEM DEALER FOR THE NORTHWEST AS WELL. ANOTHER HAULAGE FIRM WAS S. PRINCE AND SON S. BASED IN DENTON DRIVE. THEY HAD BLUE TRUCKS AND WERE MAINLY VOLVOS F86 AND F88. ALSO REMEMBER MC GALL TRANSPORT FROM LOSTOCK HE WAS AN OWNER DRIVER

hello lostock mike, thomo’s were saviem dealers, they had a thing for french motors because there gaffers pete & david thomason both drove citreon cars, also there fridge fitter pete mountfield had a renault service van, when my dad drove there they had about 23 saviem’s and a couple of scania 140’s,it was a decent firm, the only down side was been away all week, often running back in on a saturday morning,i can still here the old saviem turbo whistling, they sounded brilliant!,all the best gaz.

Someone,in deepest Cheshire must have some photographic history of the Gordon Plant fleet which IMO was the finest fleet in that area during the years they operated! They were always turned out crisp and immaculate and it was a crying shame that problems with the “brothers” in '79 forced them to close! Bewick.

adr has a pic of them on the ERF thread Dennis !

…just going back to Thomasons, I think that they bought a couple of Scania 111’s ex Western Transport that looked quite good in their blue and white livery. Also, with ref to the Plants from Crewe, I think that they did some fridge work along with Thomasons (didn’t they have a coldstore, full of cheese I think?) indeed their motors always looked smart

Blind Bob:
Looks like Peter has done well. Good to see a success story not dominated by the big boys. Yes CRS were green and cream changing from ERF’s to Volvos in the late seventies. Had a big warehouse in Sandbach.

Cheers

Bob

i worked for crs for 21 years everybody knew me as dobby. pete bozon has sold up due to the fact he lost his sight in an aufull firework accident about 2 years ago
