Hi Gaz

Yes I pulled Chris back from Ullapool a couple of times. He used to drive a day cab A series with a Gardner 180 for Fred so a trip home in a 240 B series was quite a pleasure. I remenber once parked up in Ullapool for the night with Chris on the back, he set fire to to the homemade cutains in the A series with a primus stove, causing a rapid exit from quite a height on the trailer. After Fred, Chris worked with us at Dawsons for a while (driving a Jennings B series with Gardner 180) before going onto the brick job. Gaz I do remember your Dad, give him my regards.

Bob

Hiya …that speedwells outfit was from Macclesfield (blue with white letters)it was Reg Stevens brother, i had a workmate who
drove for them before coming to work at S Coopers then at Bollington.Speedwells tried to muscle in on the laybond traffic but
could,nt get a load to the destination without spilling it everywhere on the trailer floor.

toowise:
I can remember a few from the Crewe area from my earlier days,…

Plants from Crewe Cold Store…painted to look like wood very distinctive.

Cold store is still going but no haulage based there nowadays.

Chambers Street Transport…grey SedAtki Stratos pulling fridges closed in early 90s I think

Chamberlains from Haslington …still going strong based on Crewe Ind.Est.

R.Atkinson from Wybunbury…worked on Mornflake contract and also Labatts still going but as Cooper Buckley Ltd (thats who i work for !)

I remember trying to count the Hollands Cheese lorries at Calveley as my dad drove past whenI was a kid. Easy in the work but always lost count at weekends.!

Seem to remember one in Sandbach called Speedwell but my memory of this is a bit hazy

Danesbury from Congleton went bust in 99 I think…last I heard one of their office managers(Martyn Heap) was working for Arclid Transport anyone know of him…I did my national and international CPC at the same time as him in Leek

is big Ron Green still working at Cooper Buckley ?

bob, have you got any more pictures of dawsons, latham’s or owen’s from the ipc days  .

Do these still run from their own sand quarry?
Did they have LAD Albion’s and maybe Seddon’s in the past.

Hi Gaz

Sorry to hear about your Dad.

I think I have some more pictures somwhere taken in the Ullapool run, maybe with one of Freds motors, I will try and find them and scan them in . Give my regards to Chris if you see him.

Taking of the recent weather, I remember one trip up there in winter and being snowed in in Dingwall for four days, mostly spent in the pub. Fred’s driver Les Craghill was with us that time.

Regards

Bob

hello bob,yes have a look for the pic’s mate,cheers gaz

As I recall, Gleaves Transport at Weaverham was in the name of the Mother of the two brothers that ran the company?. I seem to remember Atki tractor units. I was an apprentice at Fodens with Kev Gleave who was one of the owners sons.

Is this the same Gleave Transport that Vic Wild ran?Bewick.

Not too sure about a Vic Wild connection with those Gleaves, but I think there’s another Gleave family at Nantwich that show a nice old Sentinel steamer, so maybe something to do with them?.
The brother of Reg Stevens aka R,H,Stevens of Macclesfield is / was Fred Stevens, who later changed the company, or name of the company to STD Transport, the last time I had dealings with them they were on the Ind Est in Congleton, having moved there from Lime Green in Macc and were running Iveco units.

Some other Cheshire hauliers from the past;

S,C, Fernyhough, Swythamley, recently died.
John and Tom Bayley, Macclesfield,
Alan Egerton, Rushton Spencer,
Ryders of Rushton,
Edwards of Hull (Middlewich),
Bill Banks, Congleton, (His son now operates from Sandbach),
Dane Valley Haulage, Bosley.

John.

Daleford sold the quarry and possibly the wagons to RMC. I remember seeing a couple with just a small RMC sticker on the door but otherwise unchanged. They were very smart when they were going.

Hi there gaz ,think i used to live near to you in the village of lostock. My dad used to drive tankers for JW BARROWS in lostock just under the bridge from where JACK RICHARDSre now. his name is pete hanby, when the firm closed down he became demonstrator driver for north west trucks. does anyone out there remember him or have any photos of JW BARROW trucks they were mainly ERF and tankers would be nice to hear from anyone who remembers them. thanks mike

Hi Lostock Pete, I remember Pete Hanby when I used to work for North West Truck Engineering Co,to give it its full title used back in those days.I started working for them at what was a relatively new, Stoke-on-Trent depot,up until its closure in around 1987/88.If I’m correct. I remember that only a few weeks before we’d sold our first Daf 95 to Ed Weetman.

In later years I worked at the Lostock depot.I seem to think that a very pretty girl in the parts office was Pete’s daughter?
Can’t remember her name, maybe Sue?, but I can still picture her.
I found the Barrow family to be about the straightest employers that I’ve ever worked for. They expected their pound of flesh just like anyone else, but if your wages were short one week through their mistake they’d tell you before you even realised and it would always be put right again the next week without having to remind anyone. Can’t say that about many these days!.

In those days I worked very hard and very long hours, but they were some of the most enjoyable times ever. The old NWT team were a great bunch to work with in those days.
I personally remember Pete as a really likable, easy to get on with chap. A true gent.
Best regards,
John.

Sorry,meant Lostock Mike,not lostock Pete.Having a senior moment
