Thought you might like to see these 1940’s & 50’s photos of cattle wagons belonging to Hansford Transport from Montacute and later Tintinhull, Somerset. The Bedford OW, FYB 663, dates from 1941 and the two Dodge Kew lorries, SYD 757 & TYD 521, date from December 1954 and May 1955 respectively.
The firm was originally William Frederick Hansford of Stoke Road, Montecute and later K.J Hansford (Keith Hansford) of Tintinhull. They later had an LAD Dodge, an Albion Super Clydesdale, AEC Mercury and Volvo F86 cattle wagons. Does anybody remember them?

Hello Neil, there were many small firms in this area, some running just two or three motors on cattle haulage, while there were also several on cattle transport that had just one lorry. perhaps if you can be more specific about the location I might be able to assist with the name of the operator.
Cheers, ergomammoth
I know this is not from the 40’s and 50’s but i thought it would be nice to include a picture of today on this site, i took this picture yesterday while in Frome cattle market when i was there buying some stock. This truck can be seen here every friday and belongs to Sturmer who hails from Eastbourne ,the owner is a big buyer of store cattle and fills this truck most weeks, just shows how things have moved on,regards Buzzer.

Hi JC55 arn’t Morgans,Tite’s and Georges still running, ime sure i have seen them in Frome Market recently as well.
I think its just Georges, C B Morgan packed in a while back and N B Tite sold out in the nineties. Some of the old firms I recalled still exist but have changed name. Don t do the mkts anymore so you lose touch I suppose.

My uncles drove for C B Morgan of Shaftesbury and I used to go to most local markets with them throughout 70’s. I rmember a lot of these hauliers but A J Stokes were from Codford near Warminster, not Chippenham. I well remember Cobden’s, Harraway’s, Webb’s, Carpenter’s, Stokes, Tite’s, aswell as J T Heritage, A E Stuart etc.

just found this thread my father and uncle use to move a lot of livestock around the country in the 50s and 60s heres a couple of photos
SYC 531G was always around the markets in the 70s when I used to go with my uncles. I can still picture the driver in his long brown smock type coat and a hat

Heres a few from the 60s
Hi, I’m new on here and I liked the Tite’s Commer. I remember them well in the 70’s, regulars at Stur market. I remember the old Albion Reiver as well as numerous Commer, Bedford, Fodens etc, but does anyone rmember the old Maggie Deutz artic that they used to run?. I think it was HWN 573D and I think was ex Entress transport of Swansea. The Trader, of Flower’s from Chilmark, Wiltshire is interesting because Chilmark is only a stone’s throw from where I live in Tisbury. My uncles worked for Morgan’s at Shaftesbury for many years, one started in about 1964 and when I started going around with him in about 1969 he was driving an Albion Reiver, XRV 203. He then drove a new Leyland Mastiff, BYA 264J. My other uncle, his twin brother started about 1975.
Does anyone have any information or photographs of Jeff Farrow’s lorry. I remember him hauling cattle for my father now and then, I believe he had a Dodge then possibly an Austin or Morris but they were dark Blue with I beleive a Drews body on. I think I’m right in saying his signwriting went J M Farrow, Chew Magna. It was a long time ago and I could be wrong.
I’m asking because I’ve had a lovely email from his Grand-daughter asking for information on him following her seeing him mentioned earlier in this thread & I’d love to be able to provide her with more than my memories of her Grand Father.

hi all just like to bring the thread up to page one neil b
J.T. Heritage of Frome, Somerset were the owners of this new Gardner 5LW-powered E.R.F. 54G in 1966.
The livestock body was built by Drew of Bristol.
Cheers, cattle wagon man.
Was it Drew the body builders who manufacterd the DREW SPRING they were the springs that helped to close the rear door they were a heavy coil spring enclosed in a cylinder and worked better and were safer than the long coil spring
