Cardiff-aberystwyth-llanelli

got a bit of a run around wales tomorrow.

i was thinking…cardiff-pontypridd-merthyr-brecon…up the a470 to rhayader,then a44 to aberystwyth.

then…back to rhayader-builth wells,a483 through to ammanford and the m4.
can anyone see a problem with this route…or know a better one.i sit with a welsh chap in my local, and he reckons…carmarthen-lampeter-aberaeron-aberystwyth…then obviously back again.

i`ll be heavy

It’s been a long time, But i’m sure it’s ok.

Think you main problem may be snow!!! Don’t know what its like that way but there’s plenty here and it’s not far away.

forecast looks fine for the rest of the week…i`m hoping the roads will be clear by the time i get there.i should hit cardiff by mid morning…then onward from there.

South Wales hasn’t been hit with the snow so you should be ok round those parts.

If your heavy get cardiff done am first then ponty then merthyr then brecon, your on the ■■■■ roads then little lighter makes it easier to stop when the dingo,s in tractor,s come at you the wrong side of the road on their mobile phone,s down west, was snowing in lampeter yesterday so a wee bit slippy

The coast road from ABERYSTWTH to aberaeron has a few pinch points but amazing views worth taking 45 there.

yeah…i`ll be empty from aberystwyth to llanelli…might go the scenic route :sunglasses:

Call in and see Switch’s Mom!

From Aberystwyth the best way is down the coast road towards Cardigan, take a break on the way with some cracking views, hang a left towards Lampeter, then follow the signs to Carmarthen. It’s OK in a 70 seater coach. Two choices then, down through Kidwelly, bit tight but nice drive, or scoot along the A48.
Hope this helps
Paul

thanx for that
would you go that way from cardiff-aberystwyth,or would you go up over the beacons

i`m doing quite a lot of work in south wales atm…i get down there about twice a week. :sunglasses: just getting to know the best roads to use.

Firstly I’m assuming you’re in a bog-standard 3+3 artic.

I’d go Cardiff, then A470 - A44 to Aberystwyth as suggested. You could go A44-A470- A483 back through Builth, pick up the A40 at Llandovery; there is a diversion for major road works when you get back on the A483 in Llandeilo town centre but it’s not too difficult.

As an alternative to Sonflower’s suggested route; the A485 Aberaeron-Carmarthen is a bit of a pain, especially through Lampeter although presumably you would be empty. An alternative is to carry on down the A487 towards Cardigan and then take the A486 down through Llandyssul, picking up the signs for the A485 to Carmarthen just south of the bypass. If your trailer is under 15’ there’s a signposted short-cut to Pencader. There are a couple of sets of roadworks on the A486 but no major delays, and it’s a far better road than the A485.

As an added thought; if you go via Carmarthen then take the A48 to Llanelli rather than the A484. As Paul says it’s a nice road but it’s also effectively 30mph all the way. Most of the business stuff in Llanelli is A48 side anyway.

nice one.

yes i`m in a bog standard rig,and will be empty from aberystwyth to llanelli.

after llandyssul…do i stay on that road(a484) all the way to carmarthen,or does the short cut you mention take me onto the a485.
my trailer will be under 15 foot.

p.s.done the roadworks at llandeilo

just to add…it`ll take me roughly 3 and a qaurter hours to cardiff, and roughly 4 and 3 quarter hours back from llanelli.
how long are the bits inbetween

You come down the hill towards the island at the bottom, bear to the left signposted Carmarthen (A485). You can go either way actually but the A484 is not the best of roads in an artic.

Cardiff to Aber is a good 3 hours I reckon, depending of course on where you’re tipping in Cardiff;allow another 3 back to Llanelli.

Wales can be a pain in the backside to drive around in a fully loaded artic but it’s a beautiful and fascinating place. I love it.

A470 Cardiff-Brecon-Langurig-A44- Aberystwyth. Could be snow over Brecon Beacons, but should be OK by Monday morning.

Pont Abraham’s a dump, most of it’s shut down after 8pm there’s no shower and last two times I’ve called in, no hot water either. If you’re coming from Carmarthen, there’s a big lay-by just before the motorway with decent all-night toilets. Save your boss £25 or whatever it costs and use that. Plenty of police traffic thereabouts (Dyfed-Powys HQ is in Carmarthen) so it’s as safe as the MSA. Or if you need a shower use Swansea West.

Oh, and if you see a blue FM 6-legger curtainsider with a Moffett on the back on your travels, it’s probably me! :grimacing:

i`ve seen that laybye, but the boss insists we park in secure parking areas(yeah…i know :unamused: )
