Hi Jeff pleased your getting better it’s not my fault you were trying to keep up with my other two 11 car big boys Brian Hubbard & Dave Emanuel with the obligatory 2 breakfasts. I have heard Brian has had one new knee & waiting for another. Peter look after that shoulder it’s a long job.

Nice looking outfit!Lathems had a place in Preston, as well . thank you Trevor
Lathams, main depot was in Preston I think, Martin Latham one of the Son’s was our Manager at Cartransport BRS in Coventry 1990, the other Son had a garage just off the A38 north of Derby somewhere, the walls of his office was adorned with pictures of Lathams Motors
Hello Dieseldog am i right in thinking in Preston the depot was at Bamber bridge ? , i did not know that it was the main depot ., those Atkis were something else . Was there Toll bar place some where in Leics ? thank you Trevor
Hello tastrucker, I think it was Bamber Bridge, the Toll Bar is reference to the Toll Bar phone exchange which was situated where the A45 meets A46 at what we call Kamakazi (spelling) roundabout, there depot was up on Oxford road opposite where the Peugeot Plant was, car sales there now, hence the had a Toll Bar phone number as we did in Baginton.
HI Cliff your right about oxford rd garage my Dad worked out of there not many lorries there if i remember a couple of wagon and drags a artic and Hugh wallace bedford ,he use to park it near the fence ,they kept new cars round the back,Michael and his Dad was nice blokes ,well to me any way happy days …
Hiya chaps just reading thtough some old posts There were three brothers we called them the 3 MMMs Michael-Martin were involved with car movements.Michael had L.A.B International Which was Lathams Auto Bulk,Martin had a trip to Italy with me when he was growing up.
We also sub of Astans-Verious other company’s that were running M/E.Yes it was the main depot in Preston but not Bamber Brdge it was Lower Penwortham .Malcolm was the 3nd brother he was at uni when I was there.Michael was a gentleman Lost touch when he went of to derby.
Cov was the better run depot. There cousen David in Preston wasn’t much help to the running of the car side.I believe he has a G arden centre
in garstang .The main depot for the movement of cars was in coventry.
Guesty44.Take care.
My dad worked for Abbey Hill in late 70’s early 80’s. He had the first new lorry at the new Lufton site, Yeovil. It was a Fiat 684 lorry and drag, they called it the Lufton Lady. I believe it was the first lorry they had bought with extra hydraulic ramps, a common thing now a days.
This picture was taken at the Sandwich depot. The lorry wasn’t his then but we had spotted it whilst visiting and took the opportunity for a photo. My dad is Tony Steer and he drove all sorts of car transporter before moving on to work for Hallett metals of Crewkerne.
Any one got any photos of either Abbey Hill or Halletts please.
I worked for BRS (Toyota) Cartransporter in Sheerness in 1982/3 here’s me unloading at Croydon I also worked for Abby Hill when they started a depot in Queenborough to deliver Hyundai cars shipped into Sheerness Docks, like to see some old photo’s of ‘Scabby Hills’ as the opposition used to call us…Happy Days ■■■■ Matthew (Sittingbourne Kent)

Hope you get back to work sooner than expected Glenny ! , I will look out for the name plate .
wow what a thread !
been north east based can remember a lot of the tranporters & companies pictured
sorry about the size of the pic but here is my old S/A with 7 car salvage hoyner trailer, taken late 90’s
had this because at the time 5 car transporters were mega bucks & this was the cheapest way to car quite a few cars at once, but not so good when you went into city’s with only an a to z & no bridge height info or sat nav, ended up in some horrible situations with the peak deck almost hitting stuff on once side the single axle cutting in on the other side…as quite a few of you reading this thread will have experienced
Prabably 50 % of the damaged cars I delivered didnt drive so everyone wanted the transporter backed into there street or down their back lane, reason it had to go after a couple years of delivery hell with it,
also had a J reg 1726 V8 drawbar merc which was a cracking wagon but no good to load for salvage & couldnt pull the skin off a rice puddin fully loaded, sounded great ! but was painfull on the hills
ended of with this ex- norman marshall scania which was faultless & never gave any trouble
here my current ride :
Had to post this photo,at first I thought it was a wind up! But apparently not, takes the ■■■■ out of what Vosa is doing to uk designed and built Transporter Engineering bodies, being fined for overlength when EMPTY!!! Makes you wonder how they pass an mot test.no wonder more and more people are realising that Vosa, are indeed a joke.
