Another couple of CJR 320B tipping at Adams & Gibbon Westmorland Rd Newcastle, dont know the reason for the missng one on the back.10

A great sight that is, we had identical motors on Progressive, with topdeck folding extensions front and rear. I would say that the Glendinning motor is after they shortened the drawbars (Ministry Regs about 1967ish). The Vauxhalls stir the memory and I am pretty sure before they shortened the drawbars we could get 5 victors on top, very tight, in fact turning in the slightest dip broke rear light clusters, I’ve done it  .

Hi oiltreader the one on the photo was actually at the full length as it was new at the time before they had to be shortened, we were running well ove 70’ with cars hanging off the front and the back, I think the Carters were even longer. The unit was very unstable and rolled a lot, there was a few roll overs, in fact Progressive rolled two within a short period of each other just north of Scotch Corner at Barton before the dual carraigeway was built. I can remember going into Normans at Brotheton and drivers comming over and telling me the rear wheels of the unit were 6’’ off the ground going in & out of the pot holes. I had a regular mate but he did’nt like to do 4 trips a week, if I turned round on a Friday afternoon to do another Oxford one of our tipper drivers would be press ganged into going down as mate, it was a bit of a white knuckle ride & for some reason they only did it the once. They did’nt like the sound of the front tyres hitting the bottom of the cab. No power steering either the Leyland seat backs used to snap when you were setting them up for a corner.

Yes transporter man the Leyland Carrimore wagon and drags did lurch a bit. I also had a Commer 6cyl Perkins wagon and drag on Progressive, they were more stable. Do you or anyone else remember them. Progressive took over a firm in Rowley Road, next compound to Furness and Parker. the wagons were red, the previous owner was Larry Port and I’m not sure what his firm was called, he had 3 mebbe 4 of them.
Powerwise they were on par with the Leyland 400 and flew when empty. The rotary fuel pump on the Perkins was a bit awkward when it came to replacing fuel injector pipes which broke now and again, spares always being carried.

I cannot remember the vehicles you are talking about, we used to load in Rowley Road I can remember we used to pass a cafe on the way in and there was one company who used to park transporters in there

Lawson did park in our yard in Preston. Ditchfeild Transport. A new driver set of down south and broke down about 4 times. so Lawson turned him around and said go back to the yard ready for the night man to go up north.

So the said driver did head back. In the yard he came, then just 1 out of 40 tautliners was parked in the middle of the yard. So Mr Lawson came in and turn round and then has the top deck swung out when he truned tight it hit our trailer on the n/s rear and knock the trailer over and it was loaded with pop. He just turned to tight he could of gone the other side the yard was so big, So I think that guy had a bad day? But never saw him again. somone dids say Lawsons would let you have one good crash but then it was the sack?.

There were a couple of firms I can remember , that use to operate AEC wagon and drags, one I know parked on Frenchy’s Cafe, opposite the origanal BRS depot in London Road, where the Mazda dealer is now, iirc they were red,“Masterway’s” or “Motorway’s” is all I can remember, this was in the 50’s and as I was only a nipper, it’s so hard to remember.

Looks like it could be the start of Johnny Pratts, the one he tarted up.

Hi glenny54, that would definitely be John Pratt, tho’ the photo doesn’t show the chrome wheel trims he favoured.

I was talking to Bob Robertson today, Ex Furness and Parker, Cartransport BRS, who went on to form Finham Car Delivery and sold out to ADL? up in Scotland, he tells me Johnny Pratt is still about and living in Rugby, I think LB 76 was asking.

how did this happen ,0

I guess he’s caught something whilst turning right with the overhanging car and its been pulled off the deck. Bet the chains holding the front end are tight!! It is possible some one on this forum may recognise the truck.

It wasnt me!!

Your right Glenny at the end of 2001 they put in some new TE Plus 12s on Mercs, which were carrying 12, they could get 13 on but to do so had to climb out of the window on the one between the axles which was not allowed. When the new Rolfo came into the country they replaced the Plus 12s because they could achieve the 13. They had a load of trouble with them especially the independant suspension, there was one bay in the Abbey Hill workshop Soton which was permantly taken up with one of these trailers!

Heres one of the Plus 12s[attachment=0]P

What was the history behind Sillcock and Colling, how did they grow and where did they disappear to ? You saw them all over the place in the 60’s and 70’s.Bewick.

They got sold to become Silcock Express and then sold again to TBG mergered with Toleman and became Axial. Axial I believe split when TBG pulled out of cars (cos it don’t pay), the Ford contact part became Ansa and the rest of Axial was absorbed into the Autologic group. I think thats right if you can follow it.

A couple of Silcock Express, one home one abroad.
