that trailer is interesting transporter man,tri-axle,would,nt have thought the extra axle would have been necessary, but must have been for a reason.
talking of Bartletts, anybody remember seeing that old hoyner 9 car tri- decker of theirs,it came into Keddys at Grimsby one day with 10 cars on,but not 3 small cars in the middle like you could load for 10,it had 3 along the top deck,it had two long extentions at the back end(i,m bloody sure they were x-skids)i’ve never seen a car bounce so much,i wish i had a camera that day. That youngun that dives for GB in the olympics would’ve loved the choice of them two springboards…only the irish eh!!.

A great sight that is, we had identical motors on Progressive, with topdeck folding extensions front and rear. I would say that the Glendinning motor is after they shortened the drawbars (Ministry Regs about 1967ish). The Vauxhalls stir the memory and I am pretty sure before they shortened the drawbars we could get 5 victors on top, very tight, in fact turning in the slightest dip broke rear light clusters, I’ve done it .

The extra axle would not have been needed weight wise but if you look its an extension in length is the reason it has been added on the back.
Top, a Walon Volvo and bottom a computer generated image of the real thing, what make is the trailer?.

Hi oiltreader the one on the photo was actually at the full length as it was new at the time before they had to be shortened, we were running well ove 70’ with cars hanging off the front and the back, I think the Carters were even longer. The unit was very unstable and rolled a lot, there was a few roll overs, in fact Progressive rolled two within a short period of each other just north of Scotch Corner at Barton before the dual carraigeway was built. I can remember going into Normans at Brotheton and drivers comming over and telling me the rear wheels of the unit were 6’’ off the ground going in & out of the pot holes. I had a regular mate but he did’nt like to do 4 trips a week, if I turned round on a Friday afternoon to do another Oxford one of our tipper drivers would be press ganged into going down as mate, it was a bit of a white knuckle ride & for some reason they only did it the once. They did’nt like the sound of the front tyres hitting the bottom of the cab. No power steering either the Leyland seat backs used to snap when you were setting them up for a corner.
Another from over the Channel.

Not quite right but not saying nowt but it was legal, other companies with tractors tanked up just to go over then transfer the fuel across.

Yes transporter man the Leyland Carrimore wagon and drags did lurch a bit. I also had a Commer 6cyl Perkins wagon and drag on Progressive, they were more stable. Do you or anyone else remember them. Progressive took over a firm in Rowley Road, next compound to Furness and Parker. the wagons were red, the previous owner was Larry Port and I’m not sure what his firm was called, he had 3 mebbe 4 of them.
Powerwise they were on par with the Leyland 400 and flew when empty. The rotary fuel pump on the Perkins was a bit awkward when it came to replacing fuel injector pipes which broke now and again, spares always being carried.
